I was raised in Tropic, and I built this home on Mecham family property. It is in the perfect location on the edge of town but Tropic is small enough you can walk to the center if town within minutes. Everything is in our home you will need. and Bryce is only a few minutes drive, or a 2 mile hike from the backdoor!
Lindsey Jones Or Tad Mecham purchased this house in 1992
Because it's Big, Spacious, Comfortable and the views are breathtaking!
The decks are amazing to watch sun-rise over the Escalante Mountain and Sunset over Bryce Canyon! You will be within 2 miles of the park boundry, and hiking trails into the canyon.
Spacious house with great views especially of the rising moon. Perfectly positioned for visiting Bryce and Escalante parks. We would stay here again in a heartbeat.
This house located in Tropic is a real gem. With 5 bedrooms, six beds 3 bathrooms there is plenty of space for a large family or group. Nice town park, grocery and gas station nearby. The house is well maintained, clean and has a fully stocked kitchen. Would highly recommend for anyone looking for a center ally located place to visit all round this part of Utah

We were looking for a home close to Bryce and found it in the Cowboy Retreat. Only 15 minutes to the park. The house was large and comfortable and clean. Great laundry facilities and fairly well stocked kitchen, although some grilling tools would have been helpful. Bedrooms were clean and comfortable, although one did not have a door! Mountains on the side and the horse farm behind the house were a beautiful backdrop, if you don't mind the sound of frequently barking dogs that were also there.
We stayed in the house from June 21-25 this summer. The home is conveniently located for spending time in Bryce and Red Canyon. There is a lot of space, with a fully finished basement and 3 full baths. There were some issues, mainly with the lack of air conditioning. When we returned to the home in the late afternoons, the temperature inside the house would be around 85 degrees (even though we would close all the windows and blinds in the mornings when we left.) We would open all the doors and windows, and by bedtime we could get the temp down around 75 degrees. Lack of fans in the upstairs bedrooms forced all but one couple to sleep in the basement. There are only 2 bedrooms in the basement, so people were sleeping on mattresses on the floors. There was a portable A/C unit that we hooked up in the living room in the evenings that would cool that room, and we moved it to the bedroom in the evening.
Another issue was the numerous hound/hunting dogs that resided on the lot behind the house. The folks sleeping in the basement weren't bothered by them, but my wife and I were upstairs, and more than once we were awakened by the howling and barking during the middle of the night.
The refrigerator ran hot, just barely keeping our food cool, and the ice maker didn't work, and there were no ice cube trays, so we had to buy ice at the local market.
The kitchen had a dish washer, but no drain board for the pots/pans, etc, that we needed to hand wash. Something that basic would have been nice to have.
The coffee maker would only brew 2 cups of coffee at a time, and then stop working. There was no tea kettle (another basic item in most kitchens) so we had to use a pot (without a lid) when making water for tea, instant oatmeal, etc.
Most of the window blinds barely functioned, lacking wands for adjusting them, or lacking the mechanisms for holding them open when raised (we had to tie knots in the cords to keep the blinds up.
Also, the house was advertised with a pool table in the basement, but there wasn't one (not that big of a deal, but a bit of a disappointment for the kids.)
With some improvements, this could be a really nice rental.
We really enjoyed our 3 night stay at this lovely home near Bryce. The home is huge and nicely appointed and we would stay here again. The beds were comfortable, they provided ample towels/linens, dinner ware, glasses, utensils. The pots and pans were a bit worn and scratched up. The blinds in the house apparently have had a lot of use since most did not have the wand to open and close the slats. Outside of these few issues we felt it was a wonderful place to stay. We especially liked having the back deck to enjoy the sunsets and watch the beautiful horses near the back yard. It has a ranch-like setting, very peaceful. I would recommend shopping for groceries and supplies in a larger town because Tropic and Bryce City are limited and grocery prices are higher.
It was very nice and in a quiet neighborhood. I loved the setting. The house was clean and tidy. No problems with things working. The only issue I personally had was the front steps which were steep for me. I am overweight so a little challenged by steps sometimes. Overall was very pleased and would repeat my visit there given the opportunity.
There was a really lovely high class type restaurant about a mile up the hill from the property. It wasn't cheap, but well worth the money and the ambiance was superb - dining on a veranda/porch overlooking the valley. Beautiful.
