Why Karen chose Arco Da Calheta

I bought this piece of land with two old stone buildings that had been abandoned for twenty years, because of the rural location and lovely sea views.

The beauty of the island, the climate and the friendliness and generosity of the Madeiran people make this a perfect destination.

What a place to celebrate your 70th birthday!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was perfect for our needs. That combined with glorious weather, great walks and a friendly welcome from those lucky enough to live in this beautiful island, made it a holiday we won't forget. Thank you to Karen for making it all so easy for us. We're now confined to base as it has been snowing heavily but at least we still have our lovely memories and photos to enjoy.

Owner's Response: I am pleased that you liked the property and had an enjoyable holiday. The friendliness of the Madeiran people is one of the joys of the island. Also I know you were impressed with the Christmas lights in Funchal. Thank you for your review.

Charming and recently revenovated cottage

  • 5 of 5

This is a charming and recently revenovated cottage located just 10 minutes drive from the beach and local amenities. It is located is a small hamlet of houses surrounded by locals tending to their home grown crops.

The cottage has been restored to a very high standard throughout and has great views of the sea and surrounding area. The open plan kitchen/lounge is spacious and has everything you need to have a great stay. The sundeck is large with a well kept raised garden to the front,  sun loungers and a bbq are also available.

The communication from the owner has been excellent from the time of booking and throughout our stay. This is our second trip to Madeira and we certainly recommend staying at this property and plan to do so again.

Excellent location for our walking holiday

  • 5 of 5

The house description proved to be 100% accurate and it was an ideal base for our walks which covered the central and the south west coastal areas.

A large number of guide books (walking and general) and maps were provided at the house which would be useful if you haven't brought your own and need some ideas. Would particularly recommend those published by Discovery Walking Guides and the house owner also recommended their guides and there are copies in the house.

Didn't use the terrace very much dues to the shorter days and that we were out walking every day but looks like it would be a very pleasant and sheltered sun trap.

All communications with the owner were very friendly and our queries answered quickly.

Would certainly recommend the house (and Madeira!) to friends and family.

Lovely house in a great location.

  • 5 of 5

A clean, spacious, well equipped house in a pretty village. There was also plenty of outdoor space which isn't apparent from the photos. Good communication & directions from the owner. The local shop / bar was very quirky & just a few minutes walk. A levada can also be accessed in a few minutes walk. We found the local supermarket well stocked & their coffee & custard tarts were delicious ! The nearby restaurant on the road to Rabacal was fantastic. Whale & dolphin watching in Calheta is a must although we preferred the beach at Ponta do Sol. The house is ideal for those who prefer to be away from the tourist resorts but is within easy reach of all parts of the island.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review. I believe the restaurant you mention is Requinte do Rochao. Excellent traditional Madeiran cooking. This restaurant is closed on Mondays and Tuesday's.

  • 5 of 5
