Overview

About the property

Villa, 5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, 10 people

El Alarife is quite different to our other houses, but it is also the work of one of Spain’s best known architects of recent decades. So not surprisingly, distribution, light, and space are major features; but so too is the location; just 90 meters from the Cala Encendida, an attractive cove at the southern end of the main Roche beach, the house sits on slightly higher ground than its neighbours, and there are lovely sea views from the first floor rooms and terrace. It is without doubt one of Roche’s best designed houses; and has been appropriately names (al’arif in Andalusi Arabic meant architecht or master of works).

El Alarife is particularly suitable for large families or two families (it sleeps ten, with a wing for teenagers should you wish, and it is no more than a skip and a hop to the beach); but it is also a house for groups of adults looking for a bit more than just a beach house. Quite austere from the outside, it lacks no creature comforts inside and the owners have complemented the building’s design with their use of pastels and a reduced amount of well-chosen furniture and objets dárt. All the main rooms on the ground floor (sitting room, dining room, and even the kitchen partially) look on to the terrace, pool, and garden; and the two bedrooms on the first floor have sea views. One terrace gets the morning sun and is protected from the poniente wind, and the other gets the evening sun and is protected from the levante. The entrance doors too have been positioned so as to provide currents, rather than gales, when either of the region’s two winds is blowing. And there are electric blinds in every room and electric terrace roofs that can be adjusted to generate just the right amount of light and shade, even on the brightest Costa de la Luz days. It is a wonderful design, and in fact the last ever design, by its architect, Estanislao Pérez Pita, whose work was exhibited internationally, including in the Pompidou Centre in Paris, and who won Spain’s National Prize for Architecture for his renovation of the National Library in Madrid.

El Alarife is built on two floors: the ground floor contains the airy, light sitting room, which has glass doors opening on to both terraces (the morning terrace and the main terrace). It also has a stylish wood-burning stove for the damper autumn and winter evenings. The dining room also opens on to the main terrace, and is next to the kitchen, which, while not large compared to the size of the house, has everything you will want, including a professional oven and hob (the owner is a keen cook and the kitchen has been equipped accordingly!) Off the far end of the dining room is the bedroom wing, with its three bedrooms (one double, one twin, and one with bunkbed) and two bathrooms. This wing also has separate entrances, both at the back of the house and from the terrace. The stairs from the front hall take you up to the first floor, with its comfy TV room, the main suite, and the guest suite. All have sea views and access to the first floor terrace. Three of the bedrooms, like the sitting room and TV room, have ceiling fans.

As for the location, it is 90m to the beach, 300m to the nearest beach restaurant, 500m to the tennis courts and football pitches, and 700m to Roche’s other amenities (children’s playground, pharmacy, minimarket, and a couple of bars). Within a five-minute drive, there is a choice of good local restaurants. You could holiday here without a car; but you would be missing Conil-de-la-Frontera (10 minutes), the hilltop village of Vejer-de-la-Frontera (20 minutes), Cadiz (30 minutes), Tarifa and Jerez (both 40 minutes), and Seville (90 minutes)!

About DosXtremos

Originally a husband-wife team that left Madrid for Spain’s deep south and a change of virtually everything, we came up with the idea of DosXtremos in 2006, the catalyst being the need to increase the number of people renting our own properties, one in La Coruña and the other in Cadiz, Atlantic Spains two wonderful extremes. And since then, even though the business has grown (we now manage a number of properties for other owners), our goal has always been the same: to try and tell other people about these two wonderful and relatively undeveloped areas of Spain that have brought us so much happiness! For this reason, the website has a heavy focus on regional information and includes details on the activities that we enjoy, both individually and as a family with young children.

All our houses are in the provinces of La Coruña and Cadiz, although there is a significant bias towards Cadiz, because that is where we live. Each house has been chosen because it has something special to offer, and we have tried to ensure that the mix meets a variety of tastes and requirements. In the case of the Cadiz properties, we live close by, meaning we are on-hand for problem solving and making recommendations. You may prefer to lounge by the pool (all our pools are extremely tempting!), but if you do want to explore, we have suggestions to fill a lot more than two weeks! As for La Corua, we personally are a long way away, but the properties are well looked after and our list of recommendations is even longer (to offset the less predictable weather!) In addition, we have a close and productive working relationship with all our owners, and we believe this shows in the way our properties are maintained.

Those two extremes: Cadiz & La Coruña are quite different, but equally fabulous; and we are able and eager to tell you all sorts of things about both. It is a simple recipe: the better the information we give you, the more likely you are to have a good time...and therefore to return!

Why DosXtremos chose Conil de la Frontera

Perfect location, spacious, high quality and confort.

Just perfect fo us!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at El Alarife for a week in June. We were two families with altogether 5 kids (from 5 to 14 year olds). The house was bigger than we anticipated based on the pictures. The "wing for teenagers" worked well for us: they got their privacy and were able to sleep late etc. The pool is not extremely big but was enough for us. The sea is very near: great view from the balcony (to which you got to walk straight from the two big bedrooms) and we could hear the waves when sitting outside in the evenings. The beach was lovely, long and clean and not too crowded (in June). During morning walks / runs you could see people walking their dogs and even horse riders on the beach. The nearest restaurant, El Timon de Roche, was nice, a bit pricy, but good quality. There were nice restaurants on the beach also, not in walking distance for us (i.e. not for a 5 year old), but easy to reach with a car. We enjoyed our holiday at El Alarife. Thank you Andrew and Maria!

Owner's Response: Hi Tiina, I am glad the two families had such a good time and that El Alarife worked well for all the ages! Of course, we look forward to welcoming you back soon! If anyone reading this wonders how big the pool actually is, it is 10m x 3m.

Fabulous property!

  • 5 of 5

This is a gorgeous house in a perfect location - so beautifully designed that even though the weather was stormy we still had a wonderful time. Andrew could not have been more helpful and prompt when we did have a issue that needed dealing with.

We all want to return!

A great holiday had by all!

  • 5 of 5

We were two families totalling 8 sharing the house. The layout of the house meant we didn't feel enclosed or under each other's feet. The house was ideal for our needs. The beach was only 150m away and was beautiful. Even though it was the height of summer, the beaches weren't crowded. Weather was fantastic and lots to do in the vicinity. Wanted to say it was horrible just so others wouldn't go to this area! So keep it a secret.

Great Villa - exceeded expectations

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic villa - even nicer than the photographs. Well thought out with unique design and layout. The middle terrace is the perfect gin o'clock spot for watching the sun go down over the Atlantic.

Super location - 100m to the beach steps and close but not too close to the other village amenities

Spotlessly clean ( and we're fussy).

Andrew is a charming and efficient host - dealing quickly with our extra requirements and offering great advice and local knowledge

Easy drive to Jerez (sherry houses), Cádiz (possibly Europe's oldest city), Tarifa (and the boat to Tanger), the wonders of Seville, and the intriguing pueblos blancos (white villages), including Vejer-de-la-Frontera. This is the Spain of fighting bulls and flamenco, ferias and finos, and fine simple food. Visit the Roman ruins at Baelo Claudio, the lighthouse at Cape Trafalgar, the old tuna fishing port of Sancti Petri. 30% of the province of Cádiz is National Park, and here you will find green rolling hills, more akin to Ireland or Wales but divided by giant cactus hedges, one of the world's most important cork forests, and a micro climate within the Alcornocales park that is regarded as the last Mediterranean jungle.

Easy walk to the chemist, newspaper, hot bread, mini market, and bar; also to the playground, tennis, and 5-aside soccer. 20-minute walk down beach to fine restaurants and a heavenly spa! Yet at night all you will hear are the waves, nightingales, and owls!

Other Activities: whale watching, bird watching, kite surfing, kayaking, ballooning,
