About Pat Coyle

I was born at a very young age, the result of unprotected sex. I'm the only son with eight sisters and we grew up in a house with one bathroom, that's how I learned to dance. Being an only son did have some advantages, I got my own bedroom, the living room. You might think sleeping on the couch as less than ideal, be it did prepare me well for married life. My parents are Irish, and right off the boat, making me 100% FBI, Full Blooded Irishman. We grew up in the Philly area where they speak English with a Sylvester Stallone accent. When I was 14, I ran away from home, and without even committing a crime, my parents promptly joined the Witness Protection Program. I admit, I was no child Prodigy, but I did graduate in the top 85% of my High School class. Even my parents didn't think I would do that good. I'm sometimes embarrassed to say I went to Penn State, with all the scandals, but I have to admit, college was seven of the best years of my life. I just wished I'd a finished. After college I joined the Navy, those were my Officer & Gentleman days. Although some might dispute the Gentleman part. My main career in life was as a pilot for the US Customs Service. It consisted mostly of chasing Drug Smugglers and Money Laundries around. I used to always say, 'A good day on my job, is usually a bad day for someone else'. After 28 years of Federal Service I retired from Uncle Sam in 07, and promised my folks I would never run away again. I soon found myself in the Caribbean flying Seaplanes and Helicopters, and those were my Jimmy Buffett days. With a hot passion to live in Alaska and fly the bush I moved to Sitka in 09 and had a real cool job flying in SE Alaska. I moved to Juneau in 2011 and got the most primo job, flying Lear Jets for an Air Ambulance company. I do hope you enjoy my profile and realize it's not all true, and perhaps we will meet face to face in the future.

Why Pat Coyle chose Alaska

I recently purchased this property with the thought of making some big home improvements. I'd like to install an inclined elevator to go up and down the hill and a floating dock for a boat and possible a floatplane. Needless to say both of these items are extremely expensive and one way to help off set the cost is put the house on VRBO. So come on up and check it out. I'd love to meet you.

What makes this house unique

I'd have to say the two most unique features of this waterfront house are are the beautiful panoramic views and the total isolation. Whether it's fishing, hunting, hiking, mountain climbing, kayaking, or just plain relaxing this location has it all. Even when the weather is bad you will feel relaxed and on vacation in this home

Extraordinary, Beautiful, and Amazing!

  • 5 of 5

My daughter and I stayed at Pats Place 9/12-9/20 and we were in heaven! The home is clean, spacious, comfortable, and well-stocked with all the necessities. Amazing views of the waterfall, rainforest, ocean, and mountains! Pat was out of town and spoke with my daughter and she said he was so nice and helpful. Beth, his friend and housekeeper picked us up at the airport and she was so nice and gracious. She carried my luggage down the many steps. By the way, we enjoyed the many steps because it was so beautiful going up and down. We loved them lit up at night. I would recommend this home for a fabulous Juneau vacation. In fact, my sister and her family are going to stay in Pat's home next year. My husband couldn't make the trip and he was very jealous :-) and we are going to go back so he can kayak, fish, hike, use the fire pit, and hike to the Ice Caves. We were so grateful to use Pat's SUV and we explored Juneau and did many activities and tours. We did the helicopter tour and landed on the icefield on Herbert glacier. We walked on the icefield and it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We went to St. Theresa's Shrine and it was peaceful and beautiful. We walked around downtown and did the Tramway and hiked up at the top. It was breathtaking! We went to the State Museum and that was wonderful. We toured the salmon hatchery and loved it. We went to the Mendenhall Glacier and walked to nugget Falls and it was a powerful experience. We went on the Whale Watch Tour and it was so nice just to go out in the boat and see the scenery. We passed Admiralty Island where a lot of bears live and had 2 Humpback whales play around the boat and one jumped out of the water and another surfaced right next to the boat. It was amazing! We drove the 48 mile Glacier Highway North and South and there are wonderful hiking trails that we tried out. We carried bear spray just in case we ran into a brown bear Yikes but thankfully we did not :-) There is a beautiful State Park north of Pat"s home where you can see Glacier Bay National Park in the distance and the Lynn Canal runs through the park and it was incredible. There was a black bear with her cub that went down to the canal and we were so amazed! We joked that we were in a National Geographic documentary. We did the rainforest tour which was fabulous and ate at the Salmon bake which was really neat. We didn't cook and ate at fabulous restaurants. Thank you Pat! We had a memorable and extraordinary vacation!

Our family stayed at Pat's for a week in August. The house is wonderful with a picturesque view. We fished, kayaked, hiked and relaxed. My family said this was the best trip of their lives. Pat is wonderful and the house is unbelievable. We saw whales and dolphins and had our own resident eagle. We caught rock fish, cod, salmon, snapper and halibut. My niece caught an 80 pound halibut. Thank you Pat.

Spacious with spectacular views!

  • 4 of 5

This house was very comfortable for the 5 of us and the views were amazing! You must be prepared for the many, many steps going down to the house as the car only goes part way down the steep hill. We were able to borrow the car which was extremely nice but the car is a little rough. There is no Internet, which we missed but the cell service was quite good. Everything in the house is provided, paper products, full kitchen, laundry facility, sheets, towels, etc, but pots and pans had no lids and some were warped with the Tephlon scratched off. The boat was not usable but the kayak was fun for the guys. The fishing poles were not in the best of shape but you can fish right from the back yard. It was a very quiet place and about a 25 minute drive into town. The Safeway grocery store was only about 12 minutes away. A few things were in need of repair but on the whole it was very enjoyable.

Beautiful, secluded hideaway

  • 5 of 5

This is our first time with a VRBO and it did not disappoint. The scheduling on the HomeAway App went like clockwork. The home we chose, Pat's Place, is a dream home. Full kitchen, comfortable bedrooms, 2 living areas with spectacular views, washer/dryer, multiple decks, firepit and the use of a car. The home is secluded and away from the cruise ships, but short trip to activities and shopping. Of course there are the 100 steps down to the house but we usually left for activities and came back late afternoon. So, the steps weren't an issue for us, especially since there is a beautiful little waterfall beside the stairs. We used the firepit and decks every evening to wind down from the day. I'm already planning another stay at this amazing place! The Walters family

A Piece of Heaven...

  • 5 of 5

I rarely take time to write reviews, however, our trip to Juneau in June was just too amazing to not share our thoughts.

First, Juneau is a piece of heaven. Our entire family fell in love with that beautiful place. Second, Pat's home helped to make our trip so amazing.

We rent VRBO houses all the time and this was the first time we were incredibly sad to leave a home and location. The location is incredible. The view was impressive both day and night. We saw seals up close and personal when we used the kayak that is provided and when we ventured around the bend, out in the channel, we saw several whales jumping in the distance. We even had a fairly close encounter with a sea lion. That was a little intimidating, but all of it was amazing. Third, the home is very charming and well designed. We felt cozy, yet had adequate space for 6 adults. The kitchen has pots, pans, mixing bowls and plenty of plates and utensils. Towels and wash clothes are in abundance.

The bottom line is, the home had everything we needed and then some. The landscaping surrounding the home is beautiful, especially the waterfall. The decks are beautiful and have plenty of chairs to enjoy the views. Pat was very nice and accommodating and did all he could to make things convenient. We are planning our next visit as soon as possible!

One final tidbit...About four miles up the road is St.Teresa's shrine. It is an incredibly beautiful and peaceful place. I wish we would have found it sooner, as I would have gone there every day just to enjoy the beauty and peace it offered. The night before we left, we went there at early sunset and had a whale gracefully made his presence known right in front us. It was an experience we will never forget.

Thank you, Pat for offering your home on VRBO for us to use. It was our best trip yet!! Bob, Sue & Family

Thank you Pat for sharing your home. The house is very comfortable, the views are amazing, and your hospitality was very much appreciated. And having the use of your suv was so helpful with our large group. Thanks again for everything. Aloha. Bill and Gail

Without a doubt the biggest tourist attraction in Juneau is the Mendenhall Glacier. An easy drive, it is centrally located between the house and downtown, Most tours are self guided and can last anywhere from two hours to two days. Their is a Park Service facility there and can answer most questions you have about the Glacier and the surrounding area. Not seeing the Glacier while in Juneau is like not seeing the Eiffel Tower when in Paris.

Juneau and all of SE Alaska is know for it's world class fishing. Some of the best salmon and halibut fishing is just a few feet off our shores. Charter fishing boats are just a few miles away in Auke Bay, (6 miles) and also downtown. You can cook your catch on your outdoor grill and if your very successful, ship home the rest. Of course an Alaska fishing license is required.

Whale watching is also very popular, but no need to charter a boat since the whales are constantly breaching within view of the back deck.

Another popular attraction are helicopter tours of the Glacier, where they fly you up to the top of a Glacier and you land and walk around. Their are 4 local helicopter operators and one is bound to meet any specialized needs. Bring your camera on this trip, cause it's sure to be breathtaking.

If you make a day trip to the city plan on a trip up the Mt Roberts Tram. Not only will the view at the top be breathtaking but their are occasional shows and a fabulous restaurant to eat in while enjoying the panoramic views.

Another popular downtown tour is the old mine. Juneau got it's start as a gold mining town and it's what put Juneau on the map. Highly recommend at least a day trip to the city for shopping, restaurants, and tours
