About the property

Fistral Cottage - a barn conversion that sleeps 4 guests in 2 bedrooms

Carnebo Barns are a small collection of self catering cottages with a shared outdoor heated swimming pool just outside the small village of Goonhavern. With its own village shop and pub serving food, you're only a short drive away from the world class beaches and nightlife at Perranporth and Newquay.

These traditional barn conversions offer a warm welcome: a short drive away from the main Newquay road leads you to the barns which have far reaching views of Cornish countryside. The barns sit in a generous plot of land, with excellent leisure facilities for you to enjoy, including a heated swimming pool, a BBQ and seating area (open beginning of April to end of September), large enclosed picnic area with children's play area and pond with fish. Please note that the swimming pool is the same depth, it does not have a shallow end.

Fistral cottage has a small tiled porch that leads you into a carpeted hall way which has a ground floor WC.The lounge/diner is a good size with exposed wooden beams. The kitchen is off the hallway and up two steps, the kitchen window over the sink looks directly into the garden and children's play area. Upstairs there is a double and bunk bed room both have an en-suite shower rooms with views out over the open countryside. The cottage has a fully equipped kitchen with built-in appliances, a micro wave, washing machine and fridge/freezer. There is a clothes horse and washing line. The lounge has flat screen TV with free view and a DVD player.

Electricity, heating, bed linen & towels are all included but you will need to provide your own beach towels. There is parking available for a number of cars on the property. Up to 2 dogs are welcome at no additional charge. Regrettably no smoking is allowed. There is a cot, high chair and stair gate available upon request. WiFi is available through a dongle only upon request but please note that the signal can be intermittent. Please ask for a dongle, if needed, when booking. There is an iron and ironing board.

Good cottage, great pool!

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed the pool in particular, kids had lots of fun. Cottage was good, with plenty of room for family with 2 small children. Hadn't read the description properly so hadn't realised there is no dishwasher (although there is space for one) and that it allows pets (you could tell be the smell) but I should have read it. Also, it's right next to a noisy road. However, it's centrally located for getting around. We really enjoyed our holiday.

Holiday stay

  • 4 of 5

A nice location and a well equipped cottage. The pool was great. We would in future avoid accommodation that allows pets as the smell of dog greeted us when we arrived. Although the owner kindly cleaned the furniture because you could tell that previous visitors had allowed the pet on the furniture it didn't entirely get rid of the smell. Apart from that issue we had a good week and it was a good base for visiting different parts of Cornwall.

A Lovely Cottage

  • 4 of 5

Really enjoyed our stay at Fistral Cottage its location is brilliant with Newquay and Perranporth only a short drive away, our boys loved the pool and was in there every spare minute! The only negatives we encountered was the unpleasant smell of dogs - we purchased some fabreeze as it was quite strong, also there was a huge patch of urine in the lounge carpet..all the carpets would benefit a deep clean.Other than that we had a brilliant time!!

Owner's Response: Hi Hazel, Thank for taking the time to review Fistral. We are glad you had an enjoyable stay overall and have taken your points on cleaning. I can confirm that every spring the carpets are professionally deep cleaned but as the season progresses they do get stained again, we can't deep clean on a changeover day as they will be left wet. The stain you are referring to has been there for ages and we can't get it up, we it's urine as it doesn't smell. We may have to look at replacing the carpet for next year as the sofas are new for 2017. Andy has since been in and steam cleaned too. Kind Regards

Good base very comfortable cottage

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay here the only thing that could be improved was the WiFi I'm not sure if this is due to the location but we were glad the New Inn was not too far as our son is 12. Again may not be the demand to improve this.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to review one of our properties we are pleased you had an enjoyable stay. I'm afraid due to the location Broadband hasn't been rolled out in that area yet which is why at the moment we are still using dongles. Hopefully we will welcome you back again one day.

Perfect location

  • 3 of 5

We had a fantastic holiday at Fistral cottage. We were surrounded by things to do (Perranporth beach is spectacular!!) and really enjoyed the heated swimming pool and our 2 year old was in 7th heaven on the trampoline. The things I would have liked to have known before booking are as follows:

Fistral cottage is close to a very busy road and the traffic noise was fairly bad (swimming pool and trampoline are enclosed so safe from traffic!).

It is quite a small cottage and the double bed is very small. At 8 months pregnant it was too small so we alternated one of us sleeping downstairs on sofa cushions.

The wifi dongle does not work, but it was actually nice to be a bit cut-off communication-wise.

As it allows dogs, I was quite aware of dog hair and the smell of dogs (super-nose here).

I would recommend this cottage for a lovely outsidey holiday as the area is gorgeous and easy. The cottage is not luxury but is a great base for exploring.

Owner's Response: Hi Kate, Thanks for taking the time to review one of our properties we are glad you enjoyed the pool etc. Regarding the bed it's a standard double and it's advertised as a double so it shouldn't be misleading. We also advertise wifi "through a dongle and signal can be intermittent" We do have numerous dog free properties available as we are well aware some non dog owners would prefer this. All our cottages are cleaned to a high standard but obviously if it has had a dog in it previously there may well be an odour. Many thanks

Fistral Cottage is situated less than 1 mile from Goonhavern village that has a traditional Cornish pub and shop, the miles of golden sandy beaches are less than a ten minute drive away.

The North Coast of Cornwall has an abundance of attractions like Newquay Zoo, Blue Reef Aquarium and the Eden Project nearby. Perranporth village is in close proximity and entices sunbathers, surfers and families with its three mile long sandy shores, where you and your family can have lunch in the Watering Hole pub situated in a prime position directly on the beach.

Nearby is the bustling resort of Newquay. These days Newquay's excellent surfing waters are the towns main industry, where as it once used to be a major export port for the counties mining efforts as well as a north coast port for pilchard fisheries. Fistral Beach holds many surfing competitions throughout the year, and also hosts Run to the Sun over May Bank holiday, a VW and Custom Car Show. Both the Womens and Mens Gig Championships are held here, as well as a balloon festival and surf and lifesaving events. Newquay Zoo now houses 130 different species in sub tropical gardens in the centre of the town.

Neighbouring Watergate Bay and The Extreme Academy offers you a 'ski resort on a beach' and a plethora of activities to keep even the most active occupied. Fifteen Cornwall, founded by Jamie Oliver in 2002 sits on top of the two mile beach at Watergate offering inspirational views for the young chefs and professionals to create fantastic menus from local and seasonal produce. The Lappa Valley Steam Railway just outside Newquay offers both the old and young an interesting day out. Newquay Airport has made the north coast one of the easiest places in Cornwall to get to, with regular flights from various locations across the UK. The town also has an Aquarium, a Waterworld and numerous immensely pretty beaches for the less active. Trerice run by the National Trust is 3 miles outside of the town is an Elizabethan Manor House and Garden with restricted winter opening times.

Holywell Bay is one of the finest beaches in Cornwall. Just 6 miles from Newquay and Perranporth on the north Cornish coast. There are 2 village shops and two inns. There is also an 18 hole golf course, Holywell Bay Fun Park, fishing and horse riding very close-by. The secluded National Trust beach at Holywell combines golden soft sands and safe bathing with dynamic caves and cliff walks. With RNLI surf patrols, it is one of the safest surfing beaches on the North Cornwall Coast. There are many caves and rock pools to explore with a large expanse of sandy dunes, providing shelter and privacy. Fishing from the beach is good and the excellent cliff walks provide breathtaking views. Holywell Bay derived its name from a spring fed well, said to have curative properties. It was custom in the older days that parents brought their sick children and dipped them in the well. Above the well is a small cave where the children were lowered from. The well is to be found at the north end of the beach in a large cave, reached only at low tide.
