Luxurious apartment in restored farmhouse, all mod cons. Outstanding views.

Bedrooms 3
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday apartment in Braga - Quinta da Tapada, Longos

Spacious, luxurious farmhouse apartment with stunning views over the mountains

Beautifully restored stone farmhouse set in the countryside but only 15 minutes drive to the historic towns of Braga and Guimarães.

Arrive to wine from the farm and a welcoming snack or dinner for those who arrive too late to go food shopping.

The Roman spa town of Taipas is 5kms away, replete with an abundance of cafés, outdoor swimming pools, parks and spa treatments, including a luxurious naturally heated indoor termal pool.

The farm makes its own red and white wine and there are fruit trees surrounding the property. Guests are welcome to sample our wine, eat the peaches, oranges, lemons, plums, kiwis, figs etc - we usually have a glut of everything!

The accommodation consists of the entire ground floor of the farmhouse and is very spacious and tastefully decorated. All mod cons in the kitchen.

The living room has wifi, flat screen TV with all the English channels, a DVD player with DVDs, books to read, Virginia's basket of suggestions of what to visit in the area.

The owners' and their children live at the farm and are there to answer any queries, make suggestions and they provide a welcoming snack for guests' arrival. Those arriving in the winter are greeted with a roaring fire and coffee/cakes whereas those in the summer can enjoy a chilled bottle of the house white.

The sitting room was the original stone wine house and its double doors open onto a wisteria covered pergola with table and chairs. Next to this is a barbecue area.

The gardens are extensive and walled in.

Behind the house there are many woodland walks, leading to Sameiro and Bom Jesus, with excellent walks around the Celtic settlement of Citânia de Briteiros only 10 minutes drive away. Alternatively, walk along the Santiago de Compostela trail, part of the path is still laid in stone.

Food: There are lots of excellent restaurants in the area with a local taverna down the hill from the house, a nearby barbecue chicken take-away and a restaurant 5 minutes from the house that only opens at the weekend.

There are lots of walks around, swimming pools and playgrounds in Taipas ( 5 mins away). The thermal spa in Taipas has a swimming pool, jacuzzi, Turkish bath, dry sauna and offers luxury spa treatments.

For breathtaking scenery, walking and water sports, Geres national park is 40 mins away. It has rock pools for a dip under waterfalls and if you drive over the Portugal/Spanish border there's a hot spring, with naturally heated water winter and summer - it really is hot!

Perhaps the best part of being here is just sitting outside in the sunshine, hearing the church bells chime every half hour, listening to the birds and in the early morning to the owls hooting, enjoying the view over the mountains and distant villages and going for walks - right from the doorstep.

Portugal has excellent undiscovered wines- the reds from the Douro and the Alentejo are sold in the local supermarkets. Oporto, and its port wine lodges, is only 1 hour away - you can either drive there or take the train from Braga, if driving into Oporto doesn't appeal.

Vinho verde (red or white) is very regional. The locals drink the red out of bowls ( 'malgas'). It's supposed to open up the flavour of the wine. If it's not mother's milk it is certainly an acquired taste....

We have a dog, cat, birds, a large tank with goldfish, friendly geese and chickens.

If you want to have a relaxing holiday in a beautiful setting yet near everything in the north - this is a good place to be. The apartment is a real home, with the sounds of nature all around and unbelievably close to Braga, Guimarães and Oporto.

If you want to just book and ask Virginia what to do while here - you won't go far wrong!

About Virginia Henry Martins

I've been living in Portugal since 1999. I've always enjoyed travelling and I like walking, aqua aerobics, cinema, good food and wine, holidays..... I speak English, Portuguese, French and Spanish. My husband is Portuguese and we have three children.

Virginia Henry Martins purchased this apartment in 2000

Why Virginia Henry Martins chose Braga

It's well located, has great views, is very peaceful and has endless possibilities.

We restored it from nothing and so if we don't like what we've created it's our own fault!

The view cannot be criticised, looking out over trees and mountains, knowing Braga and Guimarães are so close.

I love hearing the sounds of nature all around - birds, owls, roosters and crickets in the summer.

I also like to be far from the madding crowd, but not so far I feel cut off! Here, I have a good relationship with my neighbours, being the only Brit in the area. I love their traditions - especially their cooking, I have to admit. I also like the fact all my neighbours make their own wine, many their own chorizo and bread.

Down the road in Longos there is an excellent restaurant which is so reasonable in price it's cheaper than cooking at home - so I don't have to feel eating out is a big treat.

Perhaps it's just me but I LOVE the nearby town of Caldas das Taipas - it's pretty, has everything there and more -about 20 cafés, 10 restaurants, a Monday market, banks, pharmacies, including swimming pools, a spa, an amazing tea shop that has lemon meringue pie and cheesecake and about 100 varieties of tea (not that I miss home!)

Personally I like to feel I live in/with nature but if I fancy popping off to the cinema or even the theatre I'm only a 10 minute drive away from Braga.

When we first saw this house my husband and I knew immediately it was the place for us - in the right location, stunning scenery around and a few but not too many neighbours! The forest is behind the house which is lovely for walks, no matter what season. We never intend to move as nowhere else would tick all the boes like this place.

What makes this apartment unique

It's set in beautiful countryside, near two historic towns.

You arrive to a glass of wine and traditional Portuguese tapas. I have a list of places for you to visit and, if you'd like, I can put together a little itinerary for you. I have a file with a list of restaurants and their price range, so you'll know where to go and won't be shocked at the price. There is a restaurant near the house, about 5 mins drive away/15 mins by foot - very traditional Portuguese cuisine and very reasonable in price.

Lots going on here - walks, gardens, churches, swimming pools, a spa with a beautiful indoor pool and offering different treatments (massage, steam room, dry sauna, facials, Vichy shower etc).

This is a great place to enjoy Portugal from and is also good to just sit back and do nothing.

It's ideal for nature lovers - with walks behind the house.

It's very safe for children - being walled in.

There's a local taxi driver who is happy to drive guests to/from restaurants so the driver can have a break from driving and enjoy a glass or two of wine when out.

As we live at the property (our entrance is at the side), if there is a problem with the TV or the Wifi we are here to sort out the problem immediately. Or, if you just want a chat and a cup of tea or glass of wine - you're never on your own.

If you like adventure - Virginia is happy to take you for a trip in her 4WD Duster up the mountain through the forest to Sameiro. In the space of 10 minutes you can see 4 churches - Santa Cruz, Santa Marta, Sameiro and Bom Jesus. You don't have to be interested in churches to be able to enjoy the views and the twinkling lights of Braga below.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our second visit.

Quinta da Tapada continues to be a magical place for us. We will be back for the friendships, the walks, the food and wine! Highlights we missed on our last visit: Barcelos market, Valença, Tibães Monastery, Viana do Castelo and the long hike over the hills to Sameiro.

See you next time, here or in Canada!

Above & Beyond

  • 5 of 5

It was the detail in the description and the thought that had gone into providing the extra touches that first attracted me to this property.

When we arrived we continued to be very impressed. There was a welcome pack in the kitchen & Virginia & her family made us feel at home immediately.

The property was very spacious, clean & equipped to the highest standard with good quality items.

Virginia had prepared a comprehensive list of local ameneties & directions to the nearby attractions. The property is ideally placed for visiting several attractive cities(Porto, Braga, Guimaraes) along with beautiful countryside destinations such as the national park at Penedas Geres & the Douro Valley vinyards.

The approach to the property is initially a bit challenging because the road is very steep, but after the first couple of times of driving it you will become more relaxed.

I would not hesitate to recommend this property. It lived up to & exceeded our expectations.

Owner's Response: Thanks for this review - we try our best to make sure our guests feel comfortable and at home. Our aim is not to be too commercial but to make sure everyone has a super holiday. So far so good ! The north of Portugal is all windy roads and pretty mountainous, which adds to its charm but also makes sure the driver doesn't fall asleep ! When we first bought the house in the year 2000 I wondered if my old Honda Civic would make it up the hill - once I'd done it once or twice I actually got to enjoy the drive - it's like a long private avenue and you rarely meet any cars. Most people, when they get here, say it's like paradise on earth and ask me how I can bear to leave the place - it is indeed a very inspiring place to live and I don't intend to ever sell up and move on ! With three young children it's the ideal place for them to grow up. Lovely countryside, surrounded by vines and fruit trees but only 10 minutes from Braga and 20 minutes from Guimarães. We think we've got the ideal location...

Lovely experience

  • 5 of 5

Lovely house, lovely location and lovely host family, splendid views , warm welcome, including an assorted basket of foodie presents. Loads of useful information about places to visit, restaurants to eat etc. Fresh eggs, oranges and kiwis from the orchard every morning. What else can you ask for?. Missing the place already. I will definitely go back.

Owner's Response: We're really delighted you enjoyed your stay with us, and hope you'll come back one day. Can't guarantee eggs every day as we're at the mercy of our 2 chickens - must buy a few more!

superb location in north Portugal

  • 5 of 5

This is a fantastic place to stay. It is well worth the climb up the hill for breathtaking views over the hills and valleys beyond. The garden is gorgeous with orange, lemon and lime trees to name but a few. There are even kiwi fruit growing naturally. The apartment is well equipped and comfortable. Your host Virginia could not be more welcoming and helpful. Lots of interesting places to visit locally so you may want a car as well. I hope to return to do it all again!

Owner's Response: I'm very glad you enjoyed your stay here, and hopefully you will indeed come back. We love the location as it's near Braga and Guimarães, but you really are in the middle of the country. The drive up to the house is at first quite a challenge- but once you've done it once it's really quite enjoyable, driving up country roads that are only used by those who live here. There is lots to see and do in the surrounding area - beautiful historic towns, celtic settlements, beaches, as well as a national park. Braga is known as the Rome of Portugal, so if you like churches, basilicas, monasteries, gardens and walks, you're spoilt for choice! If you simply like to eat out and enjoy good food and wine at a reasonable price, there are a range of good restaurants nearby.... I love living near the town of Caldas das Taipas (5 mins away) as it has swimming pools, a hotel with spa treatments, tennis courts, a lovely old park with swings and slides for the children, a riding school and loads of cafes. What most of my guests enjoy best of all is "coming home, sitting outside with a glass of vinho verde and taking in the view!" Best wishes, Virginia

A tranquil and beautiful farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

We spent one week at this Quinta and we love it!! It is a beautiful stone wall farmhouse exactly like in the pictures. We were only 2 couples so each of us can have our own bathroom, which is a good treat as well. Rooms are spaceous and well decorated with a lot of nature light. and the ground is big so you can walk around and we ate fresh plums from the tree which are so juicy and fresh herbs for our BBQ meat and salad.

Even though Virgina and her family were not there, she still has her friend bought in some cheese, meat, bread and vinho verde to welcome us! It was a good treat to start our stay after a bit of challenging drive to the farmhouse. ;) We BBQ most of the nights and eat all our breakfasts and dinners outside on the patio as sunlight lasted almost till 10pm every night and it was really comfortable to be outside and listening to church bell music every 15 min. on the background. And since we were there by ourselves, we felt very free to stay up late outside and chat till stars in the sky.

My husband doesn't drive manual car very well, so it was a bit challenging to drive in this part of Portugal as roads are quite hilly and narrow. and road signs are not 100% clear especially going around towns. But Portugese are very friendly so we got a lot of help along the way. it is great at the end of the day when we drove through the gate of the farmhouse and totally could de-stressed with wine and food and the tranquil surrounding at the quinta.

We enjoy staying out so much, not once we turned on tv ;) but we wish weather was cooler so we could use the fireplace inside the living room!

Thank you Virginia for checking on us via email everyday and made sure we were comfortable in the house and we did. We wish we could stay longer!

Lynn and Wayne

Truly a Place to Remember

  • 5 of 5

The four days we six (three couples) spent here were too short by a long way. The farmhouse has been lovingly renovated and great care has been taken to make it comfortable and welcoming to the (perhaps weary) traveler. Virginia and her family are so charming you feel immediately at home.

Surrounding the house on every side are orchards and grape arbors, trees and shrubs make it so cozy, it's hard to make yourself leave. The beds are very comfortable and the mountain air makes for wonderful sleeping.

Nearby religious retreats, castle/fortresses and world heritage sites made for marvelous day trips...and then you get to come back to Quinta da Tapada to unwind and compare notes on the day's sights and treasures.

We spent five weeks driving around Spain and Portugal, staying in many different towns and villages. This stop was our absolute favorite, and we would love to come back here someday.

Owner's Response: Well, what can I say- many thanks! We do try our best to make sure everyone has a fantastic holiday here. So far so good. My aim is to give guests what I would like to arrive to when I go on holiday with my husband and three children. Renting out the ground floor apartment of our farmhouse is sort of a hobby for me - making sure it looks cosy and inviting, modern but not out of keeping with the look of the house. I always buy in food for guests' arrival so they don't have to go off shopping as soon as they put their bags down. I also send them a list of ideas of what there is to do and see in the area - before they come so they can plan in advance. In fact, I'm full of lists - best restaurants in the area, good food and wine guide etc! It is fantastic to be able to meet people from all over the world, a real delight! Best wishes, Virginia

Five stars that are worth six!

  • 5 of 5

A bucolic setting; a spacious, comfortable, tastefully decorated apartment; immaculately clean rooms; fully equipped kitchen (even with plenty of food to start the week!); a garden full of fresh oranges, lemons, plums, apples, nisperos, etc; a warm welcome from Virginia who will do anything to make you feel at home (and even provide daily nice and crisp vinho verde from their winery). Can’t ask for more! I give five stars because I can’t give it six!

Breathtaking views over the hills and mountains. Surrounded by woodland walks. Wake up to the sound of nature and breathe in the scent of eucalyptus.

Begin the day with freshly squeezed orange juice and fresh eggs from the farm.

Go for a walk through the forest, ending up at Sameiro or Bom Jesus.

Pop down to Café Europa in the village of Longos for hot bread rollls and croissants. Bar da Igreja is the perfect stop for lunch - try the local cuisine.

Caldas das Taipas is 5 minutes away with a colourful Monday market and lots of cafes, restaurants, a thermal spa and 2 good supermarkets.

There are also 2 outdoor public swimming pools and a nice park in Taipas, with a playground for children.

The house is set in the country but only 20 minutes from the beautiful historic towns of Braga and Guimarães.

The nearest beach, Esposende, is only 35 minutes away and Geres national park is also close at hand.

For those interested in our past, the Celtic settlement of Citânia de Briteiros is only 10 minutes away.

Golf: There are excellent ( and beautiful) golf courses at Ponte de Lima - 40 minutes drive away and at Esposende, 30 minutes drive away.

The area is full of beautiful chuches and monasteries, such as the São Martinho de Tibães Monastery. Almost every hilltop has a church overlooking the plains below.

Braga and Guimarães are brimming with culture and hold many festivals throughout the year.

The region has many restaurants, cafés and teashops, all reasonably priced.

The home owner has been living in the area for 17 years and is happy to help you put together a little itinerary for your stay at the house.
