Beautiful Manor House. 7 beds, 4 bathrooms, pool, in 5 acres of private grounds.
Surrounded by 5 acres of private grounds, mature trees and wonderful vistas around every corner, Chapeau is the ideal place to get away from it all. Enter through the stone gates, along the long winding wooded drive and leave the outside world behind you. This idyllic rural location is peaceful and private, yet just a five minute stroll to the local village past the neighbouring medieval chateau. The local village has a Boulangerie, Delicatessen and a small general store, there is also a village tennis court, 2 traditional French restaurants, one with a small bar. The private pool receives the sun all day and the terraces are positioned to provide the choice between sun or natural shade. There are large wooden tables with benches and chairs for eating al fresco in the warm summer evenings and you can choose to cook on coal, a large gas BBQ or if you're feeling adventurous, the Wood Oven. The spacious accommodation is beautifully furnished and well equipped. There are 7 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms in the main house, with a maximum occupancy of 15.
Please note that we live in a converted barn next to the house.

Fantastic house and holiday in wonderful place
Our party of 13 came to stay at Le Chapeau for a week in August. We were celebrating a couple of 50ths and had a selection of kids and teens in tow ranging from 6 to 14.
I can honestly say that a week wasn't long enough to sample all the house had to offer. We never had time to play the vinyl or all the games and books and magazines in both the sitting room and TV room but lots of our party enjoyed practising the piano and guitar when no one was listening! We also only scratched the surface of what was available in the region. We visited a great market on the Sunday, went to stunning caves at Tourtoirac, did Go ape type thing one day and visited Hauteforte. All recommended.
We had mixed weather - some scorching, some cloud, some rain - but most days we managed to spend some quality sunbathing time round the pool, which was large enough to accommodate all 13 of us on occasion. Our favourite pastimes were competitive inflatable unicorn jumping (!); cooking BBQs and pizzas and chatting around the large terrace; table tennis; trampolining for kids and finding nature we hadn't expected such as baby bats and lizards and hummingbird moths. We were also really lucky to have two nights of shooting stars. Magical!
The house is very well appointed. Decor is traditional and a bit retro in places but very charming and brimming with character. And cool and comfortable even on the hottest days. The only slight issue for us was the lack of an ensuite for the downstairs four-poster double - you have to use the shower and loo off the kitchen down the hall. But it certainly didn't hamper our enjoyment. We just shared the lovely upstairs bathrooms with the couple in that room.
Our hosts, Jen and Tim, were extremely helpful and welcoming and it was lovely sharing a drink with them on the last night and hearing of how they came to own Le Chapeau. Nothing was too much trouble and we felt very able to ask them anything when we needed to. In fact Jen and i were in regular contact right from booking up to our stay.
The village has two lovely restaurants. We enjoyed a fab set meal at L' Estaminet and went to the bakers or shop pretty much every day, and the supermarket in Hauteforte regularly.
I'd thoroughly recommend a stay at Le Chapeau for any group of people and would love to come back some day soon. A bientot!
Well equipped elegant house
We had a wonderful stay at The Chapeau with our group ranging from 1 year old to 81 years old, plus our little terrier Henrik.
The house was very well equipped with something to keep everyone entertained (swimming, archery, piano, chess, extensive book and record collection to name but a few), and to all get together for a huge meal if desired - I don't think I have ever seen so much crockery/cutlery in a house before, so no chance of running out.
Tim and Jennifer were on-hand to help whenever we needed but also left us to our own devices. They offered a very reasonable babysitting and taxi service to the airport which was invaluable in this remote part of France. They also offered us help when our car broke down - we really could not have asked for more. Once we were back up and running with the car we were able to sample the excellent food in Hautefort which really was delicious.
Our dog enjoyed exploring the grounds, which are very safe as there are no main roads in the vicinity and Tim and Jennifer's dog Poppy was very welcoming and happy to let our dog pretend he owned the place!
Thank you Tim and Jennifer for a wonderful break in the French countryside.
Idyllic characterful family house
We had a fantastic stay at Chapeau, which is a really special place with stunning views and acrural charm. There was something for everyone in our mixed age family group. The swimming pool and the outdoor terrace are fantastic and the house had plenty of space for our group of 11. Tim and Jennifer were great hosts always ready to help if we needed anything. The village is a short walk with a lovely restaurant, a shop and boulangerie. All in all a memorable family holiday!
Fantastic Chapeau attention to detail was amazing
We have had the most fabulous time here at Le Chapeau the house was very comfortable with plenty of space to accommodate our group of 12 from the youngest who was 20 years to the eldest being 69 years and various ages in between. Jenny and Tim have been wonderful hosts and nothing has been too much trouble we only had to ask. We enjoyed taking Poppy the Labrador for a walk when we went up to the local village and she kept us company most days either at the barbecue or down by the pool. We even enjoyed playing with Fleur and had a delightful afternoon with her and Jenny in the pool. The pizza oven was amazing so much so that we used it three times during our stay. To get the best results its advisable to light it a good three hours before use, We really enjoyed playing the piano and listening to the large collection of LP's on the record player in the comfortable lounge.
There is a lovely restaurant in the village called L'Auberge des Tilleuls where the lady owner speaks very good English and the food was delicious especially the desert, strawberry clafoutis with vanilla ice cream. Ask for the vodka special you wont be disappointed.
We have been to various types of accommodation in France over the years and can honestly say this has been the very best. The bedrooms and beds were most comfortable with lovely linen to match the décor. The settees and chairs were so comfortable to crash out in after games and lounging at the pool.
A most relaxing, peaceful and enjoyable time and what would we do without the wifi ...
Thank you Jenny and Tim
Eileen, Dave and all the crew
Stunning, beautiful, breathtaking slice of France.
We took a late break with our family to get away from it all. Chapeau is a stunning historical venue tucked away in quiet French countryside amongst the walnut orchards. Nestled on a hillside with enchanting views across the land , it was within walking distance of the village with it's church, restaurants, cafes and little street walkways. The Manoir is vast but homely with it's open fire in the drawing room with dvds, board games and comfy sofas to the kitchen with the large farmhouse kitchen table and log burner to make you feel snug. The big emperor bed was really comfortable, there was plenty of hot water for powerful showers or baths. The kids loved the playroom with the games console play station and the wi-if! The owners Tim and Jen were wonderful hosts who had many great suggestions of days out and walks and provided us with bikes one day for a glorious 4 mile bike ride. We rode down to a beautiful nearby lake with cabin serving drinks & food( they even picked up some of us in their car & trailer who couldn't face the ride home after a few drinks!) A trip to the Hauteforte Chateaux is a must! We had food cooked for us a few nights and the food was delicious! Other nights we ate out at good local restaurants.Although cold at the end of October, when that sun came out it was boiling! We sat by the pools "eagles nest "patio with our wine and cheese enjoying the rays and the view and the tranquility! A breath of fresh air to blow away the cobwebs of home!!! We could make as much noise as we wanted in the evenings after getting into the swing of the holiday, with music and stories told. Wonderful. Relaxing. Invigorating.Thank you- same time next year........
Lovely secluded house set in beautiful surroundings
I stayed at Chapeau for a family celebration and we all had a really wonderful time. The house is in a beautiful rural setting and was an ideal retreat. It was very well equipped with everything we needed- from the well stocked kitchen, to lots of games and DVD's- everything is catered for.
There’s plenty of outside space to enjoy BBQ’s, for children to play on the big trampoline, and of course the fantastic pool set in its secluded and sunny spot. The owners Tim and Jen were there to greet us when we arrived and were on hand if we needed anything.
We really enjoyed walking to the local artisan boulangerie in the mornings to get our croissants, baguettes and pastries etc. The nearby supermarket in Hautefort sold everything else that we needed, and is just a short drive from the house. There is lots to do and see in the area- we visited the Chateau and gardens in Hautefort which was a great day out.
Overall a lovely secluded house set in beautiful surroundings (the views from the house were amazing!) the perfect way to get the family together for a holiday. We will be back!
Thank you for your wonderful review, we are so pleased that you had such a great holiday at Chapeau and all enjoyed your special family celebration. It was a pleasure to have you all stay.
We look forward to seeing you next time!
The beautiful, unspoilt 'Pays d'Hautefort' is ideally placed for those wishing to explore the Dordogne region but has the advantage of being much less crowded than the area immediately around the main tourist cities, although these are easily accessible. There are numerous places to visit in the locality such as prehistoric caves, chateaux, gardens, theme-parks, markets, inexpensive restaurants, and museums.
Other Activities:Golf, sightseeing, gastronomy, canoeing, cycling, walking, tree climbing zipwires, orienteering, cave and chateau visits, markets.
