Great Location for experiencing downtown Galena

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful weekend at this historic house. It is very old, but has a lot of character. It was very clean, extremely spacious, and the owners were very responsive. They met us to open the house for us, and checked in with us on Saturday by text to make sure we were settled. The house couldn't be in a more convenient location. It is just a bridge walk away from downtown. This is exactly why we picked the house, for the location and spaciousness. We had two families fit comfortably. Kids loved the house and thought the decor was great.

Would stay again.

Owner's Response: Thank you Rori for your lovely review. We were so happy that your two families could spend a beautiful weekend in Galena. Our home is very historic and was built in 1839 and was the original hotel for the area before the DeSoto House was built downtown. It was also the first stagecoach stop and livery for the area during the Civil War. Galena is steeped in wonderful history and is a great place for a weekend getaway for two people of a group or a family like yourselves. We hope you can find some time to spend with us in the future as you were just perfect guests. We look forward to your next visit. Carla

Great Location... Interesting Stay

  • 1 of 5

First let me say, the location of this rental is perfect - definitely within walking distance to downtown Galena.

The home itself was...meh. The home leaves a lot to be desired. Also, I tried calling and texting the owner multiple times in advance of our stay and received no response until it was too late and we were there already. It was truly frustrating. The home is very old, there is plywood on the outside it looks like covering a hole in the siding? The entrance you walk into has a pile of "junk" sitting around as soon as you get in the door.

First, the upstairs toilet ran the whole first day and night we were there. The owners did come to check on it Saturday, but if they had been actively taking care of the home, I'm not sure why this wasn't fixed BEFORE we showed up. It interrupted our morning. There were also a lot of SPIDERS. I am allergic to some spider bites, so this was no good for me.

Second, it was SOOOO HOT upstairs where we were trying to help - AC in the bathroom and ceiling fans did not help AND we were there in OCTOBER. THERE IS NO CENTRAL AIR.

In addition, it was WAY over decorated - At some point, less is more. it took away from the feeling of the historic home. It was also just clean enough.. but not as clean as I would expect for a vacation rental - old/historic or new.

MAJOR DISCLAIMER : We were also asked to pay cash for additional fees that were not included in the VRBO listing. For example, we brought our 2 small dogs (for the Dachshund Races - 4 lbs and 10lbs) and had specifically chose this place for that reason. We selected the traveling with pets option before checkout, so we were shocked when we were asked to pay extra when we got there. We also called ahead and left messages multiple times (my phone records show 4 calls to be exact) to let them know that our friends also decided to join us - they wanted extra cash for this, but the sheets in the rooms had not been changed for their arrival and joining us. HOW CAN YOU CHARGE EXTRA FOR A DIRTY BED?! We paid it, but truly - that is why I used the website! When I leave cash, what is to say that the owner will not also come back and request extra fees from my deposit or through the website?

Basically, I gave it 1 star despite it being in a great location. Next time, we'll deal with downtown parking.

Old home that needs some TLC and an exterminator

  • 2 of 5

Overall, the property served it's purpose and the owner, Carla, was very attentive to our needs. Unfortunately, we will would not consider staying there again as we found mouse stool in the pull out couch, multiple bugs throughout the house, and a water leak in the ceiling. Needless to say we were checking mattresses for bed bugs, which appeared to be negative, since one bed had 8+ bugs on top of it and was on the phone with another hotel at 2 AM looking for alternative places to stay. If you do stay here, use lights minimally at night to decrease the attraction of bugs. Thankfully, nobody appeared to endure bug bites, however we were all on edge going to sleep. Parts of the house had an unpleasant odor.

Location, location, location!

  • 4 of 5

We visited Galena for a girls' trip, and we can't say enough about the location of this rental. Not only is it walking distance to the shopping area, but you walk through a beautiful park to get there. The house met all of our needs. Anything that we needed was available to us. While the decor of the house was a bit much, the character that it gave the house provided for a very "homey" feel and good conversation points. The house sits on a quiet street in a neighborhood that is just as cute as can be! We had a blast in Galena!

Convenient location to downtown!!

  • 4 of 5

We 4 ladies very much enjoyed our stay at this historical home! Luckily, we each had a bedroom; although we shared 1 bedroom. But it worked!!

The home is a bit over decorated, which we were prepared for, because the photos show this on line.

After removing all the plugin room fresheners (migraines and allergies), the floral smell was not too overwhelming. (Understanding old sometimes comes with stale.)

The location is ideal if you want to be downtown. We never moved the car and the walk bridges are close enough to walk over to the popular shopping and dining side of the river!! However , down the street is from the house is another restaurant we enjoyed very much - Otto's Place!

Owner's Response: Thank you ladies for your kind review. We are always happy to know that you enjoyed your stay and could get around with ease and convenience. Parking is at a premium downtown, so being able to leave your car and walk to shopping and restaurants is a big plus. We hope you can join us in the future! Carla Coppotelli
