Welcome to Blueberry Hill, a precious island cabin that has been part of our family for 40 years. Come enjoy a sacred tranquility, morning coffee with the best sunrises on Burntside Lake, nesting loons nearby calling each other across the vastness, & smallmouth bass just a cast away off the dock.
Park on your own mainland private access, bring your own boat or use our small 9HP 14 ft aluminum Lund for a few minutes to peace and adventure that awaits you.
Blueberry Hill sits on a 10 acre peninsula of this 80 acre island, where delectable wild blueberries cover the glacier-made rocks in season, hummingbirds await your arrival, eagles swoop overhead, snapper turtles may show up searching for your leftover fish parts, and the resident marten may greet you. While hiking the 10 acres of low and high ground, you may also encounter various signs of additional animal activity on the island, such as the nearby beaver hut or beaver-chewed driftwood.
Two-story windows of this modified A-Frame face east, where the dock and swimming area are most often calm, sheltered from westerly winds. Rough-hewn cedar inside and out, with an open floor plan. Three bedrooms include two enclosed rooms on the main floor with beds for 6, and an upper open loft with 2 twin beds and 4 additional mattresses. You can even scatter these on the floor as we have done for years to accommodate young friends and family. Pull-out sofa can sleep another 2.
A tiled, rain shower bathroom features locally crafted, unique accents, including sauna door handle, wooden posts, and personally-hewn mirror. Wrap-around decking allows for ease of movement from sauna to lake, from loft to outside forest, from kitchen living room to large outer deck.
Fun and easy activities include swimming, waterskiing, tubing, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, fishing, and stand-up paddle boarding, and equipment for some of these are included. A flat, grassy outdoor area can accomodate tenting.
This home has been a part of our family's culture for decades.
Our family has had a longtime affinity for Boundary Waters Canoe Area, the people and town of Ely, and Burntside Lake. For generations, our family adventures in this area have included first summer jobs, honeymoons, family vacations, portages, hiking and canoe trips. Burntside Lake, in particular, has hosted many of our family activities, and we are now pleased to share our place with others.
Island living is unique and has special qualities not found when staying at land bound sites. Secluded, you can experience an exclusive, private getaway, surrounded by your own personal wilderness. Boating adventures to refresh your spirit await, crossing the few minutes back and forth from your hideaway to the mainland. Private mainland access ensures your own car is available to visit area attractions or stop into nearby Ely for food, bait, trying on Steger's famous mukluks, or visiting the North American Bear Center or International Wolf Center. Facing a bay that is calmer than the rest of the lake, this unique spot keeps serenity near, and more intense activities at a distance.
Our large adult family gathered together for a week of peace, beauty, laughs and love in this fabulous, tranquil setting. The cabin was absolutely lovely, perfectly accomodating all of our needs and more! Our stay was, in large part, without electricity due to a major storm just prior to our arrival. We embraced the entire experience with a joyful, adventuresome spirit! This setting is simply gorgeous with breathtaking views of the lake, amazing sunrises and nighttime glimpses of The Northern Lights! We absolutely treasured our time here and are planning our return!!
We spent a week at Blueberry Hill and had a wonderful time. From picking blueberries in our pajamas (for blueberry pancakes) to fishing the lake to watching gorgeous sunrises and moonrises from the expansive deck. The cabin is well maintained, clean, and has everything you need. The dock on shore is not too far from the island, making it quite easy to run into town, when necessary. The island is centrally located in big Burntside Lake, making it easy to get to anyplace on the lake. We loved it, and hope to return next year.
We spent the week at Blueberry Hill with our 3 kids and nephew. The location was wonderful-easy to get to town and great water access for swimming and fishing. Our kids loved to explore the island and swim the day away. We especially loved morning coffee and tea on the deck overlooking beautiful Burntside Lake. The cabin was clean, cared for, and well maintained. It was a wonderful week!
Wow! Amazing property on a beautiful, wild island where there's nothing but you and the loons. We took our family of four up to stay at this wonderful oasis and were not disappointed. The cabin is classic northwoods styling with all the amenities you can possibly need. Fun nights were had baking in the sauna then running in the moonlight to the cool, refreshing waters of Burnstide Lake... we loved our stay! Our boys (10 and 6) headed out every morning to explore the island then would come back to swim and play games in the water, jumping off of the dock and swimming to the nearest rock face- simply heavenly!! Would solidly recommend this to anyone....Owners are informative and very sweet. Don't miss out on this amazing property- it will make your summer magical and create memories for years to come!!
If you're looking for a little adventure and / or some peace and quiet on the most beautiful lake near the coolest little town in America look no further. For several summers our family has rented this comfy cabin and there's something special about living on your "own" private island - even if it's just for a week. But try to take two if you can because there's a lot to do and see. The fishing is great, especially the smallmouth bass, in this deep, clear water lake that is dotted with dozens of islands, bays and points. Our 18 ft. boat fit nicely at the dock and when we weren't out catching dinner the kids were having fun jumping off it into the cool water. For a fun night out boat on over to the historic Burntside Lodge for a meal or a drink - the classiest place you'll ever find in the woods anywhere.
Make a visit to this island oasis and you too will likely find yourself coming back for more.
Our family of 4 have rented this wonderful cabin for several years. It’s big and can sleep many yet still feels cozy. The property is clean and well cared for. It’s a perfect get-away for a north woods vacation. Sit on the dock and watch the sailboats glide by or jump in your boat and try your luck fishing the day away. The cabin has cozy spots for board games, nooks for reading, and a sauna in the bathroom so you can take your pick – jump in the shower or the lake to cool down! Sit on the deck at dusk and watch the stars come out and listen to the loons. If you’re lucky, you just might hear a wolf howl from the mainland. Pack a lunch and find a spot by the lake for a picnic. Let Burntside Lake cast it’s spell – it’s a magical spot!
