The Pine Cone Casita is so cozy with its galley kitchen complete with a Keurig Coffee Maker, washer/dryer, microwave. There are Two King Size Sleep Number beds in the Casita with their own baths!
Hello Mountain Travelers and Welcome to The Pine Cone Casita! We are Tom Rodel and Julie O'Connell. Yes, we are married. :-) We are so excited to share our Pine Cone Casita with you. We bought this beautiful property in 2013 after traveling to various places around the US, looking for just that special place to retire and enjoy. We knew we both wanted to be in the mountains somewhere that had excellent golfing for Tom, and miles and miles of trails for me to hike on. So, after visiting Tom's sister and her husband in 2011, at their Villa in Torreon, we were hooked! Tom played the golf courses of Torreon, the Cabin and the Tower course, and was just awed by the mountain courses' beauty. We knew this was the place for us! When we found the property on Yarrow Lane, we just fell in love! it has everything we were looking for in a home. The Pine Cone Casita would be perfect for visiting guests, travelers, and family alike, and we can't wait to meet you!
Julie O'Connell purchased this cabin in 2013
We know you will love the peace and quiet of the Pine Cone Casita, as we are on the back of a cul-de-sac. Our property is located on the 17th green of the Cabin course of Torreon. We just love the astounding beauty of Torreon. The air always smells so fresh and piney from the trees. We think you will enjoy going for long walks around Torreon and the golf courses. You can stay in the Torreon Community, and enjoy the many amenities Torreon has to offer. Or explore Show Low, Lakeside and Pinetop. We know you will love the hiking, biking, hunting, fishing, and all the outdoor activities the mountains offer. Or, if it decides to rain, you can venture out to our movie theatre in Show Low, or head up to the movie theatre of Pinetop. There are restaurants to try and unique shops to explore,
The weather is spectacular in the summer. If you are looking to escape the heat of the Valley, or are just looking for a really unique place to get away, The Casita would be the perfect place for you to stay to enjoy all the amenities Show Low, Arizona has to offer.

Our Casita is a 758 square foot cabin with two, full master suites. One bathroom has a shower, and one bathroom has a tub/shower. Each bedroom has a King size bed, and each is a Sleep Number bed! You can adjust the beds to whatever setting you feet most comfortable with. The living area has a 42 inch, flat screen TV with Direct TV, and the Casita is equipped with Wi-Fi. The leather couch is a very comfortable electric, reclining couch. There is also a fireplace in the living area, there's a brand new breakfast bar that seats four, and the galley kitchen has a microwave oven, small, tuck-under refrigerator, dish washer, Keurig coffee maker and assortment of coffees. It has a washer and dryer, and all the accessories you could want. We provide laundry, bath and kitchen soaps, towels, wash cloths, kitchen utensils. For our 2016 season we will even have an outdoor Weber electric grill for your enjoyment!
Read the previous reviews as they are accurate and give a good impression of the Pine Cone Casita. Here's some things I want to highlight:
1. This is a beautiful little jewel box - top quality furnishings, fixtures and appliances. Perfect for two couples or just you and your special someone.
2. Do you know how hard it is to find a property with 2 king-sized beds, at any price? And these are Sleep Number beds - very comfortable with adjustable firmness .
3. Lets be clear, you won't be cooking a Thanksgiving turkey here - there is no stove, oven, cook-top or freezer in the kitchenette. Think of it as a really nice wet bar. That said, with the outdoor electric grill, foodies can take the challenge using that, the toaster oven and microwave to whip up a gourmet meal.
4. Julie was great to work with and made sure our week in the Casita was trouble-free.
This hidden gem exceeded all expectations! The casita is perfect in every way. We enjoyed a few days to ourselves then some friends came for a couple days. Our daughter arrived the remainder of our week long stay ( you get a free night if you stay a week). Everyone raved about the cozy comfy "doll house"!
We were treated to a BIG elk sighting, coyotes, & huge jack rabbits! At least I think that's what they were since no kangaroos exist in the White Mountains!! No loss for delicious convenient restaurants. Torreon's meals were great. Cattlemen's prime rib was beyond amazing. And Los Corrales was a great surprise with their stellar decor & awesome food & drinks. Back to our "home away from home".... Sitting outside (key word) for morning coffee & afternoon happy hour, was just ideal! The night skies blew us away! 2 shooting stars one night! Absolutely enchanting & kudos to Julie & Tom for sharing their slice of heaven!!!
Torreon is by-and-large a gated, golf community, but for the visitor who seeks a superior get-away cabin, The Pine Cone Casita stands out in addition to the local amenities. The place has been recently built, furnished, and decorated. It features a comfortable living room and two equally-equipped master bedrooms with king beds and adjoining baths. The lovely, modest, kitchen features appliances for convenience food preparation and an outdoor electric grill. The "food bar" features counter and four (4) stools, a below-counter refrigerator with generous ice supply, a mini dishwasher, single sink with instant hot water, microwave, and toaster.
The Casita shares a building lot with a larger family home and garage in the shelter of pine and juniper trees in all directions. We saw javelina, rabbits, and a variety of birds on the property. A map satellite view provides a nice perspective on the setting.
Wi-Fi is present but speed is basic.
The near-by Fool Hollow Recreational Area is nicely maintained and provides lake and trail plus fishing and other outdoor amenities. A Safeway is nearby for groceries and a number of very nice restaurants operated on the main streets of Show Low less than 10 minutes from the Casita.
Owners Julie O'Connell and Tom Rodel are classy and conscientious hosts and provide great value and comfort for the lodging dollar.
We ventured up north to attend a wedding weekend at Torreon. We found Tom & Julie's Pine Cone Casita through VRBO and it was exactly what we were looking for. We arrived after dark on Friday night and it was very easy to find, even in the dark. Cell phone service (with AT&T) was non existent so we had written our directions down before losing service, which I would recommend. Julie had contacted us to let us know they were having difficulty with the wifi in the casita but all four of us were able to get wifi service throughout the casita... except the couch :) The casita was the perfect size for the 4 of us with two king sized beds and our own en suite bathrooms. The fridge was the perfect size to store some leftovers from our meals at the clubhouse to munch on after the wedding. We spent Saturday morning/afternoon walking around the community in the brisk cool air and relaxing in the red adirondack chairs on the patio. We will definitely be back for another relaxing weekend in the pines! Thank you again Tom & Julie!
We were two 60+ couples looking to escape the monsoon heat of Tucson; wilted from the 100+ degree temps! Julie & Tom's Pine Cone Casita was the perfect respite. We enjoyed cool days and nites nestled in a lovely Ponerosa Pine forest. We saw squirrels, deer, lizards, jays and an assortment of other critters from the comfy red Adirondack patio chairs. The casita perfectly appointed with everything we could want or need; and the Sleep Number beds were such a treat! Julie the perfect hostess. We are already planning next year's visit!
A perfect get away for relaxing and enjoying the pines. Very comfortable and clean with the necessesities to make for an enjoyable stay. The drive to town is easy for any groceries or eating out, and we enjoyed taking advantage of the Torreon golf club for a couple of our meals.
Show Low, Arizona is a truly charming city. It is The Gateway to Arizona's White Mountains. The quality of life in Show Low is unequaled anywhere.
There is a wealth of things to do in the mountain community. Show Low is known for its summertime golf. The weather is so comfortable, and the smell of pine trees permeates the air around you. You can enjoy 7 different courses. Our favorite golf course is, of course, Torreon's Cabin and Tower courses, but wonderful public courses to try are the Silver Creek Golf Course, and Bison across the street from Torreon.
The wildlife and outdoor recreation offered in Show Low is spectacular. You could see deer, elk, bear, antelope, mountain lion, turkey, and a large variety of birds and animal species. We've had entire herds of elk run right through our backyard! There are over 2 million acres of National Forest land adjacent to Show Low and over 40 lakes and streams in the immediate area. Camping and hiking are very popular activities.
The White Mountains Trail Systems are the pride of the Show Low community, and provide over 200 miles of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Our favorite trail is the Mount Baldy trail system. Mount Baldy is absolutely stunning, as you wind your way along the creek, and view amazing mountain peaks all around you. After your hike at Mount Baldy, we'd recommend that you stop in Greer, Arizona, and eat at either the Rendezvous or Molly Butler's. The history of these restaurants is fascinating, as well!
ATV riding is quickly becoming a very popular activity in the surrounding forests. You can also rent a trail horse at Torreon's Equestrian Center, if you'd like to head out into the ponderosa pines.
Sunrise Ski Resort is located a short 36 miles from Show Low and offers 65 ski runs and 10 chair lifts. The resort also offers separate snowboarding and cross country ski areas.
Other sports recreation you can find in the area is tennis, basketball, baseball, and volleyball. There are over 85 parks in addition to Torreon's Family Center's park that can be found throughout the City.
The area casino is the Hon Dah Resort Casino and Conference Center. It houses slot machines, blackjack tables, and a poker room. The center also offers live entertainment 6 nights a week.
Just ask us what we would recommend, and we will be glad to give you some ideas!
