Golf and tourist attractions: Vila Marachique is NEXT TO ALTO GOLF , CLOSE TO PENINA GOLFand within easy drive of the Central Algarve's famous golf courses. Good deals for golf packages are easily found on the Internet. Alvor is an attractive fishing village in the midst of holiday apartments and large private villas with a wide choice of restaurants, bars, small shops and holiday activities. These focus on 2 areas: the harbour- lagoon area of the Rio Alvor estuary; and the extensive, clean, sandy beach and dunes that eventually lead to typical Algarve coves and rock formations as you move east towards Praia da Rocha and Portimao. Boat trips, canoe hire and dolphin watching trips are available at the harbour area. There are public tennis courts and an indoor swimming pool by the harbour and new fisherman's 'huts' - this is still a fishing village with fish market. Aqualand, Zoo Marine and similar attractions are within 35min drive. Or visit the historic towns of Lagos and Silves.
Beaches and restaurants: The local beaches are clean, sandy and protected from over development. They have all modern facilities-sunloungers, parasols for hire and cafes, bars and restaurants. Or walk a short distance and find long stretches away from it all. There are classic Algarve coves with cliffs and rock formations to explore.
Restaurants include traditional Portuguese and seafood, Italian, Indian ,and Chinese. 'India Hut 1' is an authentic treat.
There are restaurants next to Vila Marachique (recommend' Por do Sol') or go into Alvor and stroll around the small old town until you find your favourite. Try 'Casa da Rio' with a wonderful view across the harbour to the dunes beyond.
Bars include Irish and sports bars but most are Portuguese style -often with a cafe and snacks available. Try those at the 'square' at the top of the hill or by the 'new' market, for a light lunch or coffee, cakes and cold drinks during the day. Outdoor dining and roof terraces with sunset views are the norm.
Wildlife, 'Birding' and Countryside: Alvor has its own small wildlife reserve with protected , unspoilt beaches and dunes that form a safe harbour at the entrance to the Rio Alvor estuary. So if you have binoculars -remember to bring them. Dolphin -watching trips(small scale company ) leave from the cobbled promenade area.
It's a short drive to the beaches between Armacao de Pera and Salgados. Behind the beach (near the small river inlet at Salgados Golf Course ) there is a delightful lagoon with wild fowl and regular visiting flocks of flamingos-sometimes spoonbills and a good range of waders.
Algarve towns have storks nesting (see Silves, Lagos and inland villages) watch them soaring on thermals in the sky. They gather in fields outside Silves by the River Arade before migrating.
Drive up towards Monchique and Foia and you may see buzzards, vultures, eagles and lots of ' little brown birds' mainly of interest to serious birders! You can see bee eaters and occasionally kingfishers and woodpeckers. E-mail us for info.
'Just arrived back from Alvor having had a lovely holiday. Your apartment was ideal fot the kind of holiday we wanted and there was everything we needed. We just wish we were still there, having woken up to rain this morning! ' - MK
' the apartment was lovely and we really enjoyed our stay.'
'Nothing, I can think of really to 'improve' the apartment - we had everything we needed and more. It was the nicest apartment we have stayed in and I would certainly recommend it!!! ' JB
Had a fantastic week at this bright and spacious 1 bed apartment , lovely and clean with all amenities (kids missed wifi) superb location within easy walking distance to town , fantastic pool area , caters for all ages
Spent a week at this apartment at the end of July and it was great. The apartment was exceptionally clean and fresh. The gardens surrounding the pool area were the best I've ever seen. You need a key to enter the gardens which means that no-one can just come in if passing! The pool bar serves good food and drink. I wouldn't think it would be very good for families with small children if you are looking for entertainment because there isn't any but for a relaxing holiday it fits the bill. Having said that there were lots of children when we were there and the kids pool is huge! Its a 20 minute walk into Alvor (all downhill) but if you don't fancy the walk back there are plenty taxis and cost only 3-4 euros. All in all a great place and we can't wait to go back again.
Have just returned from our 5th visit to this lovely apartment with my daughter and 2 grandchildren aged 11 and 9. Everything was perfect and we had everything we could possibly need in the apartment which was immaculately clean thanks to our lovely maid Amelia who we have got to know quite well. The pool bar was even better than ever since it is now being managed by the residents' association and run by a lovely couple called Tony and Jane who even do breakfasts! They can also provide welcome packs on request which is an excellent idea although the little local supermarket is first class. Can't wait to go back - thanks Pam and Rob
Had another wonderful holiday at Vila Marachique in July. The apartment is so comfortable and we were looked after excellently by Pedro the property manager and by Amelia our wonderful maid who was so friendly. The local supermarket is great and prices are comparable with the bigger supermarkets further afield which is unusual! The pool area was even better than last year as the pool bar was open and there were more facilities. The swallows on the balcony were absolutely amazing to watch and I hope that they nest there next year again!!! We certainly hope to return
I had a wonderful holiday here with my daughter and two grandchildren aged 8 and 6. The accommodation, although compact, was absolutely perfect - well described by the owners and spotlessly maintained by Sofia our lovely maid. The pool area was superb and so safe for the children with the security fence / security access and the walk into Alvor was a pleasant stroll in the evenings where we had an abundant choice of restaurants to suit all tastes, particularly a granddaughter who had to have spaghetti bolognaise or chicken nuggets! Across the road was an excellent restaurant we used twice, Por do Sol, whose staff could not have been more cooperative with children (as we found in every restaurant we visited). I was a bit anxious about not having a car but there is a little supermarket just a few minutes walk away which met most of our needs and we did a larger shop in Alvor, returning by taxi at the princely sum of 3euros 90 ! All information was spot on and the owners provided an excellent service - I would recommend this apartment thoroughly and will certainly return.
Just back from a two week stay at wonderful Vila Marachique. The apartment was very well equipped, very clean, nicely decorated and great sea view. Grounds were very well kept, swimming pool was beautiful but not heated !
Alvor is a lovely small town with great restaurants / bars - two we would highly recommend are Os Marafados and Casa Do Rio
I would definitely return to Vila Marachique and recommend the property to anyone considering a stay in Alvor
