Wundervolle Tage in der Bretagne

  • 5 of 5

Bay of Concarneau

Cap Coz is a wonderful beach, from where you can take a coastal path. Beg Meil beach is also well worth a visit.

Chateau Keriolet

A jewel of the architecture of the nineteenth century whose origins date back to the thirteenth century. The Chateau is 5 minutes from the walled town of Concarneau. The castle traces the unusual fates of the Russian imperial princess Zinaida Yusupov Narishkin and her husband Count Charles of Chauveau.

Museum of Fishing

The museum is located in a building that has served as a barracks and an arsenal, and as a fishing school. As well as small craft you can see there films and models, exhibitions, demonstrations and everything to do with the perilous nature of fishing. The visit lasts at least an hour. Temporary art and photographic exhibitions of subjects related to the sea and fishing are also shown in the museum. The old trawler Hémérica which is anchored on the quay is at the back of the museum. It is accessed from a gang plank from the museum and across the quay. Visits can be made to the hold and the wheel house, the captains quarters and storeroom.

Walking the Ramparts

Walking the ramparts provides an excellent way to get an overview of the old citadelle with great views around the town and the harbour. It is a relatively easy walk with some steep steps and uneven ground in parts with a few unprotected "drops" where Health and Safety have not yet intervened! It may not be accessible to all visitors, e.g. those with impaired mobility or in wheelchairs. The full circuit can be done in two separate sections. A small charge is made in high season - perhaps partly to control the numbers of visitors walking the ramparts at the same time.

Way to the Gallows!

As you walk around the old town don't hesitate to take a look in to any opening in the walls. It may lead to nothing more than a landing stage or outlet. or to something more interesting There was a gate-way built into the walls in the 15thC. It was down these steps and from the quay below that convicted criminals were transported in small boats across the Bay to the waiting Gallows.
