Candlelight Cottage, Litton. Superb walks and excellent pub. 5 star GOLD luxury.

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,291 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

Peaceful, beautifully renovated cottage surrounded by superb scenery. Sleeps 4.

A Wonderful Place to Unwind:

Imagine a place where you are welcomed by the warmth of an AGA stove, where at the end of a long day, you can unwind on soft leather sofas in a romantic, oak-beamed sitting room and enjoy all the home comforts and modern conveniences you would expect and more.

Candlelight Cottage is that place! Our spacious cottage sleeps four people in two bedrooms, (1 double and 1 twin) and has been rated 5 star Gold by Visit England.

Original Features Combined with Modern Luxury:

The spacious oak beamed sitting room enjoys fine views over Litton village green. Chinese prints adorn the walls and there are soft leather sofas in which to relax.

The feature stone fireplace houses a natural coal effect gas stove lending the room an atmosphere of total comfort and warmth. A 32" flat screen colour TV and DVD recorders are provided along with a radio/CD player, iPod docking station, Wi-Fi and a selection of games, DVD’s, maps and tourist information.

Well Equipped Kitchen:

The sunny, south facing dining kitchen is fully equipped with ceramic hob, oven, microwave, fridge, dishwasher and washing machine.

The pine shutters, slate tiled floor and AGA stove give this room a feel of real character and warmth making it the ideal place to cook and dine.

Stairs lead up from the kitchen to the bathroom and two bedrooms (sleeps 4).

A Good Night's Sleep in Guaranteed!

The quality of our beds and little touches such as black out linings on the curtains ensure our guests get an excellent night’s sleep. The double bedroom faces south and looks out over the patio garden and fields beyond. The twin bedded room enjoys views of the village green and Litton Edge, one of the many walks possible from the cottage. The whole village green is planted with spring bulbs. In May, the view is filled with cherry blossom and at Christmas, we look out at the village Christmas tree. Radio alarm clocks, hairdryers and shaver plugs are provided along with a choice of winter or summer weight duvets for your comfort.

The bathroom is fully tiled and features a bath, separate shower cubicle, Edwardian style suite and heated towel rail.

A Great Place to Chill:

A stable door leads from the kitchen out into an enclosed and very private patio style garden. Garden furniture and a BBQ are provided in summer.

Stairs lead out of the kitchen down to the utility room, which houses the deep freeze, and other utility items. Ample space is available here for the storage of luggage and the drying of boots and outdoor clothing. A tumble drying service is also available.

At Candlelight Cottage we have tried to create a rural retreat with a real feel of luxury. Fabrics and furniture have been chosen to complement our Chinese and Thai silk pictures and each room has a charm of its own.

The house is fully centrally heated and hot water is available at all times. All windows have double glazing. Heat sensors, smoke alarms and CO alarms are fitted for your safety and peace of mind.

For the comfort of all our guests, we operate a strict NO SMOKING and NO PETS policy.

Please be aware that, as in many other old properties, Candlelight Cottage has relatively steep stairs and some low beams. We regret that we cannot accommodate children under the age of 8 years.

Fancy Spending Christmas or New Year at Candlelight Cottage?

There is a lot going on in the Peak District in the run up to Christmas. Local towns host Christmas markets and there are plenty of specialist shops in Bakewell, Ashbourne and Buxton in which to track down unusual presents.

The Christmas decorations at Chatsworth House are amazing and afterwards you can soak up the festive spirit whilst sipping mulled wine and listening to brass bands and carol singers. You can also go carol singing yourself down one of the caves in Castleton.

Litton at Christmas has a sleepy charm of its own. The village Christmas tree is positioned just opposite Candlelight Cottage and on Christmas Eve everyone gathers to sing carols around it.

Candlelight Cottage is dressed for Christmas from the beginning of December and short breaks are available until Christmas week. Often guests come in December to celebrate Christmas early; others come away over Christmas to get away from it all.

There is no better feeling than returning from a walk to wonderful warmth of the Candlelight Cottage AGA or curling up in front of the fire with a glass of wine and warm mince pie. Come and see for yourself!

Around and about you'll find:

• Christmas at Chatsworth House – The house beautifully decorated for Christmas and candlelit.

• Carol singing in the caves in Castleton – Treak Cliff Cavern and Peak Cavern.

• Pantomimes and carol concerts in one of the surrounding cities’ or towns’ theatres – Sheffield, Buxton, Manchester

• Santa specials at Crich Tramway Village or Peak Rail in Matlock

• Christmas markets in Matlock, Castleton, Chesterfield, Sheffield and Bakewell.

Then of course there's New Year's Eve!

The Red Lion pub holds special New Year’s Eve dinners each year and there is of course lots more going on ... ... If you're thinking of coming for Christmas or New Year, please contact us.

About Simon and Jill Wills

Before we bought Candlelight Cottage, we spent many hours thinking about what we would want to find in a self catering holiday cottage ourselves and just as important, what we would not want to find! We made lists, quizzed our friends and bored our family to death. Candlelight Cottage is the result and we are still always adding new items to make it even better.

Our guests often refer to the cleanliness of the cottage and our attention to detail. We are committed to making your stay with us as happy and relaxed as possible and hope you will want to return again and again. This is how we measure our success and by the numbers of repeat bookings we must be doing something right!

Candlelight Cottage is a family run, self catering holiday cottage, business and we aim to do all we can to ensure you have a really good time here in the Peak District. We always welcome everyone personally on arrival and are available to help with anything you might wish to know both before and during your stay.

We like to introduce guests to locally made specialities by including a selection of them in our welcome pack. We are lucky to have several local pubs featured in The Good Pub Guide so there is plenty of choice when you go out to eat and drink.

We know how lucky we are to live in this beautiful area and are keen to reduce the impact of our business on the environment as much as possible. We were very pleased therefore to become Peak District Environmental Quality Mark holders some years ago. The PDEQM recognises businesses which have adopted good environmental practices and contribute to the conservation of The Peak District National Park. Being part of the scheme has allowed us to add goods and services which enhance our guests’ stay with us and help the local economy.

In Candlelight Cottage, we feel we’ve created a home from home where people of all ages and interests can enjoy a truly relaxing holiday, surrounded by beautiful countryside. We look forward to welcoming you too.

Guestbook comments from the owner

It was the week before Christmas and it was very cold. However the welcome at Candlelight Cottage was anything but! – a twinkling Christmas tree, chocolates and champagne in the fridge, cake, bread, biscuits etc. etc. in a most comprehensive pack of goodies. Simon and Jill really do know how to pamper their guests. The lounge was stylish yet so cosy. Everything was spotless and we enjoyed a very happy and relaxing few days. Sunday lunch at The Red Lion was delicious. Thank you Jill and Simon.

Candlelight Cottage, Litton. Superb walks and excellent pub. 5 star GOLD luxury.
average rating of 5.0 based on 11 reviews

The best cottage we have ever been to. So comfortable, clean and well equipped. Amazing scenery.

  • 5 of 5

We've been to many cottages and this is by far the best. We were met by Simon, who showed us round the cottage and gave us loads of ideas about things to visit and good walks. There was also a welcome pack from the local deli in Tideswell - somewhere we visited often during our stay. The cottage had everything we wanted and was incredibly comfortable, warm and welcoming and full of extra little touches to make our stay special. Simon and Jill have clearly spent a lot of time thinking about what to put into the cottage and we have never been anywhere so clean! They definitely deserve their 5 star Gold rating and we would give them 6 stars!

We visited Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Bakewell and did lots of walking. Sometimes we left the car at the cottage and walked from there along the Monsal Trail or through Cressbrook Dale, which was spectacular.

We ate at the Red Lion pub in the village a few times and found the food good and the people friendly and welcoming. At the end of the week, we didn't want to come home and we are already planning our next stay, as there are still so many things to see and places to go, which we didn't have time to do this time. Thank you Simon and Jill for the wonderful welcome. We'll be back.

Lovely cottage in the heart of the Peak District

  • 5 of 5

I have stayed at Candlelight Cottage three times with my family. The cottage is a delight. Spotlessly clean, everything you could wish for. Comfortable beds and very cosy and warm. The kitchen is ideal for four people with every item you could possibly want.

It is always nice to be welcomed personally and Simon has given us lots of tips on the best places to walk and interesting places to see.

We enjoy the Red Lion pub, within easy walking distance of the cottage and usually eat there several times during our stay, but there are loads of other good pubs in the area too.

Candlelight Cottage is one of the nicest and cleanest cottages I have ever stayed in and it is certainly worth its 5 star rating .

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review Phil. I know last time you were here you all enjoyed cycling from Bakewell to Buxton along the Monsal Trail (especially through the tunnels!) Well next time you come, why not try the High Peak Trail or Tissington Trail from Parsley Hay? They are also former railway lines, you'll be able to hire bikes and there are plenty of places to stop for picnics and ice cream along the way :)

Fantastic Cottage in great location.

  • 5 of 5

We always like to stay here for our family pre-xmas break and it is by far the best cottage we have stayed in, Jill and Simon keep it to a superb standard and are always available with any questions right from time of booking, it is decorated nice for Xmas and benefits from a really nice friendly pub opposite on the village green with great food! And the location is perfect for some really nice walks and close to Bakewell and Buxton.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your very kind review Paul. This year, in the run up to Christmas, Chatsworth are doing nativity performances in the farmyard starring their own farm animals, gourmet evenings, floral workshops and wreath making demonstrations. I always enjoy browsing the stalls at their huge Christmas market and keeping warm with a mulled wine and mince pie! I’ve also noticed that the House is only closed 24th – 26th December 2016 and 1st January 2017, so it’s nice that anyone staying over the Christmas or New Year period can enjoy the beautiful decorations and lights too.

Super stay!

  • 5 of 5

"This was our fifth visit to Candlelight Cottage. It’s a fabulous place to stay and a real find!. The personal welcome with guided tour including tips and advice, the welcome pack and beautiful fresh flowers all create an excellent first impression. Jill and Simon are very caring and friendly and keen to maintain the highest standards in all aspects of the cottage. Nothing is too much trouble for them and they will even arrange extras such as birthday cakes and helium balloons! Candlelight Cottage is one of the most comfortable and immaculate cottages we have ever stayed in. It is well maintained, well equipped and has quality fixtures and fittings such as leather sofas and silk prints, not to mention the wonderfully warm AGA - (Scones, casseroles and slow roasted lamb cooked in the AGA are to die for!) The cottage is fully equipped and very modern, whilst retaining its cosy feel, with the fire making it very warm and romantic in the evenings. There are beautiful scenic walks right from the door and the village pub, just across the green, serves delicious food. We loved the atmosphere and the open fires when we visited in wintertime. There is also a small village shop and we have found Litton a great base for visiting just about any part of the Peak District, because it is so central. Our favourite places are Bakewell, Chatsworth, (brilliant place to walk even if you are not into stately homes, also excellent farm shop) and Eyam, which are really close by. On this visit, we particularly enjoyed cycling on the Monsal Trail, just down the road from the cottage, and attending cultural events in Sheffield and Buxton. The cottage is warm, cosy and always spotlessly clean. Everything is exactly as described on the cottage website and the booking process is always smooth and easy. There is loads of local information in the cottage on everything from places to visit, to walking routes. The village is pretty and the surrounding countryside is stunning. Candlelight Cottage really is worth all its outstanding reviews on Tripadvisor, which is why we keep coming back! We would recommend this cottage to anyone wanting five star accommodation in spectacular countryside at a really affordable price. We shall be back soon!"

Spotlessly clean 5 Star accommodation

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was in March 2015 but I cannot input this date!

This is an immaculate cottage, spotlessly clean, quality furniture and fittings, extremely well-equipped with everything you could need, warm, cosy and inviting. Jill gives a personal welcome and tour of the cottage and its facilities. In addition there is a very comprehensive file with information and instructions for all of the equipment from the CD player to the washing machine. Plus there is a further fully comprehensive file of information about the area and its attractions. There is great attention to detail to every aspect of this cottage. The cottage is in the small, quiet village of Litton with a pub and a village shop. It is in a very central location in the heart of the Peak District with the towns of Buxton, Bakewell and Matlock easily reached as well as the lovely Moors, Peaks and Dales in the area. Ideal for walkers or for anyone wanting a relaxing time visiting the lovely little towns and villages all around the area. The property also has broadband wi-fi which was very reliable and a big bonus as far as I was concerned. I would have no hesitation in recommending this cottage. Without doubt, the cleanest place we have ever stayed."

Excellent accommodation worthy of it's 5* status

  • 5 of 5

I have stayed at Candlelight Cottage on 3 occasions so far with another week booked in a few weeks time. It is an absolute pleasure to experience this charming little gem of a cottage which is spotlessly clean / comfortable / well equipped & in beautiful surroundings. The cottage is a credit to the owners Jill & Simon; you immediately feel the warm cosy ambience of the place. It has been lovingly restored / refurbished; you couldn't wish for anything more. We have always received a wonderful warm welcome from Simon which is greatly appreciated & you know that he would always be happy to help in anyway he could to ensure you had the best holiday possible. After my first visit I knew I would definitely be returning frequently & I look forward excitedly to each return! Already looking to fit in a further break before the end of the year!!!

Terrific Location:

Litton is the ideal place to spend your holidays; a picturesque village at the very heart of the Peak District with a wonderfully welcoming pub, renowned for the quality of its food and drink and a village shop serving freshly made cakes and local ice cream.

Lots to See and Do:

Close to all the major sights and attractions such as Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, the spa town of Buxton and the bustling market town of Bakewell, Candlelight Cottage is a perfect rural retreat. Surrounded by stunning countryside with miles of walks and cycle paths from the door, the difficulty is deciding where to go first!

Stunning Scenery:

The Peak District has two distinct types of scenery; the high, heather clad moorlands of the Dark Peak and the softer limestone landscape of the White Peak, with its distinctive dry stone walls and flower clad limestone dales. Candlelight Cottage lies almost on the border of the White and Dark Peaks, so it is easy to enjoy a wide variety of scenery and activities during your stay.

Huge Variety of Outdoor Activities:

Caving, mountain-biking, climbing, wind-surfing, gliding, golf, fishing and water sports are all available locally and if bird watching and wild flowers are your passion, a ten minute walk will transport you into breath-taking limestone dales teaming with wildlife.

Music, Theatre, Festivals:

Culture buffs will love the variety of live performances on offer at Buxton Opera House and in the theatres and concert halls of Sheffield and Manchester. During July, Buxton hosts the world famous Buxton Arts Festival, which attracts many well known figures from the musical and literary world.

Gardens and Well Dressings:

Local traditions such as Well Dressings, elaborate pictures made from flower petals can be seen in the summer and the area boasts some outstanding gardens.

History and Theme Parks:

The Peak District is full of fascinating historical houses, National Trust and English Heritage sites, ancient ruins and local museums, but if all that history, culture and nature become too much, you could always spend a day at the Alton Towers theme park!

Great Food and Drink:

Eating and drinking out is a pleasure. Local pubs are full of character and serve excellent meals - we can recommend our favourites. The area boasts local breweries, farm shops, a Michelin star restaurant, wine bars, tea-rooms and some excellent fish and chip shops too! You won’t have time to try them all...

Useful info:

There is a great pub and small shop in Litton village. Tideswell,( a 2 minute drive away), has a supermarket, butcher's, bakery, post office, greengrocer's, chemist, delicatessen and an ATM. There are also pubs, restaurants and some delicious tea rooms.

Getting Here:

Most guests come by car. (We are only 3 hours north of London 10 mins from Bakewell and Chatsworth House by car), but a car is not necessary, as there are good public transport links to Litton.

Public Transport:

Buses. A number of bus routes operate through Litton linking the village to Bakewell, Chesterfield, Manchester, Buxton, Sheffield and Meadowhall shopping centre. We can provide details of these.

Rail. The nearest mainline stations are Chesterfield and Sheffield; smaller stations nearby include Buxton and all the stations in the Hope Valley.

Air. The nearest airports are Manchester and East Midlands, both just an hour away by car.

Taxi. We can put you in touch with a local private hire taxi company.

We want you to have a super time!

In the cottage we provide maps, leaflets, books on the local area and a list of "MUST SEE" places to visit. We are always happy to make recommendations, especially if you have a specific interest and we'll do all we can to make your stay happy, comfortable and memorable.
