About the property

5 Bedrooms, 4 Bathrooms, Farmhouse Kitchen, Detached House, Enclosed Garden

Both the snug and the main lounge have log burning stoves to ensure a cosy night in.

The first bedroom is located downstairs (single or twin) and there is a shower room next door. Upstairs is the standard double with an en-suite shower room attached and the two other bedrooms share the main house bathroom with a stand alone shower and a beautiful free standing bath to soak away the aches after a long walk up the ghyll! About Amy Gorman

We are Joe and Amy Gorman. We live in Leeds and bought School house in October 2014 as a Holiday home and Holiday rental. We have renovated to the best of our ability whilst trying to maintain many of the original features that attracted us to School House in the first place. Amy is a nurse in palliative care and Joe works in business however, Amy spent 9 months in Gunnerside learning the building trade and decorating!! Ths is our first holiday rental cottage and we hope you love as much as we do!

Amy Gorman purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Amy Gorman chose Melbecks

We fell in love with School House the moment we visited. A day later we sealed the deal and moved as quickly as we could to get cracking on the renovations. The location is perfect as we are keen walkers and love the social life that this wonderful village has. We fell in love with the people as well as the village as everyone made us welcome and supported us in our new business venture. The views are spectacular in this part of the dale and the house just has so many interesting features and truly is steeped in history!

What makes this cottage unique

The house is unusually organised however just works so perfectly well. The low ceilings make for a cosy night in in front of the fires whilst the kitchen bread oven houses an old family set of scales. The house is wonderful for all our friends and family to get together and have a celebration and the kids love to play hide and seek (if they are not so tired from playing down by the river or playing with the lambs in the meadows!)

Great for a family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had a really relaxing time at School House and enjoyed meeting Amy, the owner, who went out of her way to make us welcome, from the card to welcome us, to the nice touch of a bottle of fizz, some biscuits and even a lovely vase of freesias in the window. The village was a great base to explore Swaledale on foot and we only used the car on a few occasions to travel further afield. The local pub is just down the road and the Sunday lunch at the Ghyllfoot café was voted the best. All in all a nice relaxing break for eight adults and two children and we look forward to a return visit.

Where do I begin! Can't believe how much thought has gone in to making this such a superb holiday home. From the lovely comfortable beds to every type of oven tin, this has been very well thought out and we enjoyed all the experience. We already knew the area but had forgotten just the sheer scale of the beautiful scenery lovely walks and friendly local pub.

Great property for a group in a fantastic location

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 10 walkers stayed here Friday 16th to Monday 19th June, 3 nights.

This is a great property which easily sleeps 10 in comfort and with good privacy. It is well equipped and decorated to a high standard while retaining the lovely character of the property. Bedding and towels were of a high quality and spotlessly clean as was the whole property.

Located in Gunnerside with a good pub (we had a post-walk drink their every day and ate there on the Saturday night) and a good cafe, it is ideal for exploring Swaledale.

Plenty of short and long walks from the doorstep with great pubs/cafes to rest-a-while if needed.

We intend to return to this one. Its that good!

Charming cottage in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

We have just spent a fabulous week in School Cottage. It was everything we were hoping for.

The cottage is delightful and is equipped with everything that you could possibly need.

We loved the location, however you need to be prepared with your food etc as there is no village shop. This did not matter though as the local pub (Kings Head) served the most delicious fish and chips!!

Lots of places to visit by car and if you are keen walkers then this is paradise!!

Definitely recommend.

Gunnerside is a village located 17 miles west of Richmond in the heart of Swaledale. It lies 6 miles west of Reeth and 6 miles East of Keld between the River Swale and its tributary, Gunnerside Beck. The stunning location makes for a wonderful place to holiday, if relaxation is your choice or action and adventure, Swaledale is the perfect place for you. Hawes is a short drive over the Buttertubs (11 miles) a wonderful market town with lovely antique shops and the Wensleydale cheese factory is a must visit. Leyburn (14 miles) over the tops on Grinton Moor, a lovely old fashioned town with the bustling market on a Friday. Richmond is a pleasant drive away to visit and also the historical town of Barnard Castle, steeped in history (and some nice shopping).
