Two family size dining tables, and a game table and kitchen table that can accommodate overflow, make this home the perfect place for food, fellowship, fun and family. There's plenty of room to spread out, too with two bedrooms with double beds, the downstairs easy-access bedroom with a Queen and a pullout couch, 1 bedroom with a double and a twin, and a fifth bedroom with two double beds that is part of the upstairs apartment (complete with a kitchenette and dining area). There are also two futon beds perfect for napping!
Though we recommend family fun instead of TV watching, two separate television viewing areas - and internet - are available. Enjoy board games or puzzle challenges on our multiple tables (help yourself to the game closet). The apartment and downstairs baths offer showers, and the upstairs family bath has a tub. You will probably best enjoy our outside shower though - complete with a Gulf view!
Jo-Vel is one of the very first homes to be built on Alligator Point and has a deep, high lot with LOTS of beach front. Our family especially enjoys watching the dolphins play in the morning -- or sunsets at dusk -- from our large deck. The parking pad out front can easily accommodate four cars.
In 1948, our family BUILT THIS HOUSE and four generations still love to walk on the beach together - taking advantage of the amazing natural beauty. It is common to see dolphins arcing through the water, chasing the mullet towards the shore as they fish. Shell collecting and sand bars tempt us daily! Our lives are busy, and time seems to stand still at rustic Alligator Point... Year-round, we find Jo-Vel the most fun - and the most restorative place - that we can imagine. We now live all over the world, but Jo-vel anchors us!
Victoria Papajohn purchased this house in 1948
Jo -Vel Cottage is named after John and Velva Powell – the first generation to dream. They are gone, but 3 generations continue their dream of family at Jo-Vel. The five bedroom cottage was built in 1948, before there was electricity or a paved road (imagine driving on oyster shells). Drinking water was hauled in 5 gallon jugs. The second family generation now owns Jo-Vel, and is starting to pass the wand of protection on to the next. Family members have come from Japan, India, Guam, Spain, Egypt, Canada, England and all across the United States for reunions. We try to keep it up, and upgrade it well, without losing some of its original 'cottage' charm. Seining for shrimp and fish, and dropping in the crab traps have always been parts of our routines at Jo-Vel. You will find some historic maps, and family pictures around the house to help you feel right at home!
Though sleeping in is one of the great joys of any vacation, make sure you set your alarm at least one morning at Jo-Vel and take advantage of the front porch deck with a cup of hot coffee or tea as the world around you awakens. Birds, dolphins, gulls, pelicans and heron are regularly seen all around the house and along the beach shoreline. Though their nests are to be protected, and NEVER disturbed in any way, we have been blessed with watching sea turtles lay their eggs in nests out front, and even witnessed the release of the many little hatchlings...
Fishing is truly fantastic, and our Alligator Habor is unique. Wikipedia brags of its renown for its clam harvesting: ' Because there is little freshwater flowing into the harbor, salinity levels are almost the same as the Gulf of Mexico. The salinity levels allow for the successful clam harvesting industry within the harbor. The bay also contains shallow oyster bars, that contain good fishing areas.' Our waters are rich, and you will enjoy casting a line here! Boat launches are nearby along Alligator Point Dr.
Our family of 5 adults and 7 kids had a wonderful time at Jo-Vel. Lots of little nooks and hiding places, for whoever needed a bit of a break from the crowd. The carousing cousins all had fun. Yummy meals, stretching out along the tables. The tables cleared, there were puzzles and card games. Great days at the beach, calm mornings for kayaking, choppy afternoons for boogie boarding, long walks on the white sand. Loved the old family pics, and seeing how the house had changed. We appreciate the limited commercial entertainment opportunities but of course made an essential trip into Panacea for the Gulf Specimen Marine Lab - to pick up handfuls of hermit crabs and be squirted on by scallops. We'll be back!
We loved our stay at Jovel last week! My husband, myself, our 3 daughters and 3 grandchildren had a blast exploring each room. There was a bed for each of us and one more! 2 BR's are dark and 2 are very light, so we had our preferences. The upstairs apartment was cooler in the evenings and was perfect for family congregation. The 3 refrigerators were super! Jovel is an older home with family/beach friendly furniture. We loved how the owner had a ring binder with house history and local info brochures in it. Family pictures hung on the walls - real homey. Memories preserved by a few pieces of the older things, porcelain-top kitchen table, green coffee mugs, Tupperware. Things to know: wear slippers to beach or hot sand will burn feet coming back. Take a long wooden-handled net and a small float to sand bar (for scooping sand dollars, hermit crabs and large shells). There is a small room with locking door that you can store your beach stuff in at night. It also has sand toys and floats in it. Bring your own folding chair. Water calmer in AM, rougher and windy in PM. Use the covered grill in FRONT of house or hard to light/cook due to wind. (Victoria, please advise where to put the used charcoal). Bring a power strip if you have lots of small things to charge. House has coffee maker, blender, toaster oven, microwave, a large electric griddle, a mixer and 3 fridges. House has lots of little stuff like toothpicks, matches, spices, salt and pepper, oil, storage bags, dish detergent, dishwasher detergent, garbage bags, foil. Bring hand soap, toilet paper, tissues, paper towels, napkins, extra light bulbs/night lights, laundry detergent. Wi-Fi is better downstairs. Lots of step-ups and step-downs so not good for elderly or wheelchairs. Original stairway steep and not lighted - use safer, carpeted steps from laundry room. Large laundry room can store all your ice chests/luggage till you go. No cupboard space for food so used painted wooden table in dining room area - worked great - all could reach and instant inventory! Top of game cupboard in dining room worked great for all the paper/plastic table ware I brought, but house has LOTS of silverware and dishes to use. These old folks couldn't figure out how to use the TV/cable, so simple instructions would be nice. Bring DVD's to play. Lots of brooms, dustpans and mops there to keep the sand at a minimum. We really enjoyed our time at Jovel and look forward to returning again! Thanks for sharing your house, Victoria!
First, let me say that my family and I really enjoyed our stay overall. We had 5 adults and 6 children under 8. There was PLENTY of room for everyone, the place goes on forever, and feels very old. The house is a "maze" of stairs and doors, that lead you to a new place every time. Our kids loved moving about through the house. The view of the ocean was the highlight and we loved the porch and walk to the beach. Can't beat the uncrowded beach of alligator point! The outdoor shower area was convenient, as was the extra hose on the supply room. The house had 3 FRIDGES! A HUGE plus for us on this trip. Sunroom was a great place to kick off the sand. Victoria is such a pleasant person to work with, and always responded promptly to our questions or concerns. She is an A+ in my book.
There were a few drawbacks for people to know, however, but I anticipate that Victoria (the owner) will address in the near future. 1. Several of the beds were very old (especially the twins throughout), and virtually worthless to sleep on. I'd say 50% or more of the beds need to be replaced asap. 2. Overall, the furniture was not comfortable. I was never really that excited to actually be inside the house. (which was probably a good thing). It's an old place, and therefore has really old things inside of it. 3. The house does have some safety concerns for children and adults alike, door knobs that would lock and stick behind the person who entered and some knobs broken, one child got locked in a room, and the deck on the board walk has screws popping up everywhere. Red ants were pretty awful. If allergic, be careful. We were bitten many times. Mounds were everywhere in the yard.
Other than a few minor set backs, like those listed above, you can't beat JOVEL if you want a nice spacious, and relatively cheap place to stay on alligator point. Don't expect the RITZ, and you will love it as much as we did.
Our family had an enjoyable stay at the Point. The weather was almost perfect, especially for this time of year. It only rained part of one day and one night. Great family memories were made walking the beach, swimming, shelling, playing in the sand, watching the dolphins, sitting by the fire at night on the beach, and I could go on and on. What a great way to celebrate Christmas with my husband, children, and 8 grandchildren! (My grandson and I decided spending Christmas at the beach should be a new family tradition every year).
"My sister and I invited our mother and our cousins to join us at Alligator Point last summer -- and we found Jovel Family Beach House to be the PERFECT SPOT FOR our MULTI-GENERATIONAL GATHERING! And it's RIGHT ON THE GULF -- perfect for walks on the beach, sunning, fishing and water play!!!
We enjoy the natural beauty and remoteness of the area, and found the house very comfortable and nicely updated -- charming, too. The house has many rooms - and kinda sprawls around, offering our group of more than 10 guests (teen age to 83!?!) plenty of space to spread out.
Some houses advertise that they fit 10 or more -- but all they offer is beds enough, and NOT enough living space. ... JOVEL fit our group well and is outfitted for larger groups too -- even has 2 kitchens and an outdoor cooking space. "
My family an I had such a great time, it was nice being so close to the beach. An we found plenty of things to do.
Definitely can't wait to go back..
GREAT FALL RETREAT FOR FSU FOOTBALL!!! Natural beauty abounds with sea oats, sand dunes, pine forests and marshy areas teeming with wildlife - great for plein air painting, birding and wildlife observation. Quiet, sparsely populated area great for fishing in both the Gulf of Mexico and Alligator Harbor, known for its clam harvesting. Fish right out your front door in the Gulf, or take advantage of the full service marina & fishing charters. For a break, you can drive a little over a half hour to take advantage of the many local events like the Apalachicola Mardi Gras, Apalachicola & St. Marks Lighthouse Climbs, Panacea Blue Crab Festival, The St George Island Regional Chili Cook-off, and The Florida Seafood Festival, the state's oldest maritime event! You can be AWAY from it all, yet ENJOY it all easily!
