About Tom and Catie Bursch

We are Catie and Tom. We each grew up in Minnesota and journeyed North to Alaska in our late teens looking for opportunity and adventure. We ended up finding lots of both and eventually we found each other. We've raised our two daughters in this house in Homer and each summer we all leave to commercially fish for salmon in Bristol Bay. While we are away we make our home available for the heart of the summer for visitors to enjoy. When we return from fishing or traveling we find our little home by the bay an oasis and a place of comfort. We hope you do to.

Tom and Catie Bursch purchased this house in 1994

Why Tom and Catie Bursch chose Kenai Peninsula

We began working as deckhands on Homer based commercial fishing boats in the early 80s. We spent our off seasons traveling abroad and living in remote Alaska. When the children were toddlers we decided to move to somekind of town. Because our income is seasonal, we had our choice of anywhere in the state, and chose Homer. Its one of the only communities on the coast of Alaska without too many days of rain, has a strong family oriented community and good support for the fishing industry.

What makes this house unique

One of the only view properties in Homer where you don't see any other structure in the view shed yet are only 5 min from downtown Homer.

A+++++ Excellent!!! We absolutely loved this home.

My husband and I stayed at Tom & Catie's home for 4 nights in July 2016. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The home is situated on a bluff overlooking Kachemak Bay / Cook Inlet and I was glued to my binoculars the entire stay. The view from the house is of the bay and mountains. It is simply stunning. Our favorite view was from the master bedroom.

The house is extremely comfortable. There is a living area with 2 comfy couches, a dining area with a table for 4, a functional and easy kitchen and two bedrooms upstairs. We only used the master bedroom, which has a very comfortable bed and a small lavette that was perfect. There is a second bedroom with 2 twin beds. The downstairs bathroom has a shower that has great water pressure. Everything was super clean (this is VERY important to me). The home is totally private (you can't see the neighbors and they can't see you) and the only sounds we heard were those of a few birds and squirrels.

Everything was exactly as described on VRBO and we found the owners very easy to work with. The photos in the VRBO listing were true to the actual home. We had one issue while we were there (the wifi went out) and the rental manager came to the house within an hour of my text message.

On the coffee table in the living room, the owners have left a binder with simple instructions for the house and recommendations for local restaurants and activities. We followed their recommendations and were very pleased with our meals - especially the Two Sisters Bakery and The Bagel Shop (which we never would have found were it not for their recommendation). The coffee table itself is a small display case of some fascinating natural items. The owners provide a small chart of its contents. Just one of the charming elements of the house.

We just cannot recommend this home highly enough. It is beautiful and comfortable in every way. During our trip to Alaska, we stayed in 5 different properties and this one was definitely our favorite.

Owner's Response: Allison, wow, thanks so much for your wonderful review. We are just now settling down after the fishing season and attending to things like this, so sorry I did not thank you earlier. It makes us feel so good that other folks can get the same enjoyment out of our home as we do. We enjoy traveling and appreciate finding a good match for our needs. Its reasuring to hear our webpage accurately describes our house. Have a happy winter!!! Catie and Tom

Home sweet home!

  • 5 of 5

Property was as discribed. We really enjoyed the view and the feeling of being so secluded yet so close to town! It felt like home, very relaxing place to spend our last few days in Alaska! We would highly recommend this place to anyone we know and would try staying here again if we ever venture back into this area!

Spectacular view, comfy home, not for techies

  • 4 of 5

This is a very nice home with a spectacular view of the water and quiet seclusion. Loved that it was out of the business of Homer but very close to get back into town and the activity. We were very comfortable here and had a great stay.

It had a brand new looking gas grill but we didn't get a chance to try it out, and new adirondack chairs for lounging on the expansive deck. The kitchen was well stocked for cooking and had extras like spices and teas, etc. Great dining area for 4 with the view out the windows. The beds were comfy also.

Teens and techies won't love this place though. The only TV is actually a PC monitor in the living room, the size of a very small TV, and it only gets a couple channels. My teen boys were looking forward to an actual home where they could watch the MLB All Star game and were very disappointed, we had to go out and find a bar with TV's. Additionally the wifi was very spotty and chunky. We got it, but it was slow and cut out a lot. These were our only problems in this place.

Overall a nice home with a beautiful serene view, the 4 stars is only because of the tech issues, but with a family with 2 teen boys, those were disappointing.

Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This home far exceeded our expectations. A beautiful design with a gorgeous view. Even spending a day on the deck reading felt like a perfectly spent day. Conveniently located close to Homer but far enough away for peace and quiet. We would absolutely stay there again. Thank you!

Fantastic Stay... gorgeous view.

  • 5 of 5

This was a fun stay with 4 men and the house was plenty of room. The view was amazing and the owner was great to work with. Absolutely no complaints! Beware that the Google Maps location won't take you to the right place so follow the instructions that the owner sends to you but it's super easy to find. WiFi was a little weak but you're not vacationing in Alaska to hang out indoors and stream movies all day.
