About this property

Minutes from everything! Sleeps 4. Heated Spa Pool.

Villa Kamares is a traditional stone villa containing three apartments with heated spa pool situated in the heart of Panormo village - 200 metres from everything: a dozen tavernas, cafe bars, beaches, minimarkets, bakery, shops, excursions offices, buses!

Panormo village is the perfect holiday destination for people looking for a traditionally Cretan, Greek holiday. The village is attractive and authentic, located on the north coast approx. 21 kilometres east of Rethymno, Panormo village is very popular as it successfully blends Cretan character with low-key tourism. The cobbled street on which Villa Kamares resides is a picture postcard scene.

Villa Kamares was originally built in 1912. Largely renovated between 2013-2016 with natural stone, the beautiful structure is adorned with stunning hand finished stone arches and walls with some original wooden beamed ceilings and floors.

Furnished with traditional furniture which retains a totally authentic Cretan feel but with all the modern conveniences such as air-conditioning, smart TVs, Wi-Fi and central heating for evenings in low season.

This listing is for our Astraeus apartment within Villa Kamares. The apartment has two double bedrooms both with UK size king size beds; a kitchen/living space with handmade wooden painted kitchen incorporating cooker, microwave, fridge and freezer, dining table and chairs and traditional double sofa bed; one main shower room and one en-suite shower room.

Astraeus is located on the first floor of the villa, the doors from the kitchen space open to a lovely feature balcony which overlooks the quaint main street. The view from the balcony is picturesque and relaxing with local people and visitors leisurely strolling down the narrow, cobbled street admiring the beautiful old Cretan buildings, stopping to browse in the gift shops and to have light refreshments in the café bars.

Panormo is a picturesque and delightful Greek fishing village that has retained its charm and originality and has not been spoilt by tourism. Extremely friendly and welcoming local people live in the village. The location of Villa Kamares is fantastic, everything you need is just outside or a very short walk away, all within 200 metres including two beaches, three minimarkets, bakery, pleasant café bars, a great selection of tavernas serving delicious home cooked Cretan food, hairdressers and jewellers, a massage specialist and several ATM machines. This all makes for an extremely pleasant small resort with lots of character.

Just around the corner from the villa lies a small stunning harbour and beautiful beach with tavernas and bars overlooking the picturesque deep blue sea with translucent clean water and gorgeous mountain views.

The two beaches in Panormo have firm sand, a small harbour beach is situated with tavernas overlooking, and a larger beach has a lovely taverna on the sand. Both beaches are protected by stone breakwaters making swimming safe even when there's a strong northerly wind. The beaches are gently sloping and ideal for children. There is a dive centre on the larger beach and some low-key watersports.

The church of St George is located in the village, you may be able to hear the church bells ringing on a Sunday morning which gives a lovely feel to the day. The carob mill is situated on the edge of the village, this is a modern cultural centre hosting exhibitions and major music and theatre performances.

Panormo is 20 minutes by car to Rethymno, 45 minutes from Heraklion airport and 1 hour 20 minutes from Chania airport. Villa Kamares is a few minutes walk to the bus stop which regularly transports people to the towns of Rethymno, Chania and Heraklion. Panormo also has its own land train offering a choice of two morning trips into the Cretan countryside. This is a great way of exploring the surroundings if you do not want to hire a car or go by bus further afield.

If you want to go on further excursions, it is possible to book a trip at one of the three travel agents that have offices in the village or rent a car upon your arrival at the airport; however, a car is not necessary unless you want to do a lot of exploring further afield.

Our good friends Stefanos and Cheryl, a local Greek man and his English wife who are well known and liked in the village are available for interaction with guests. Stefanos meets and greets guests and Cheryl looks after housekeeping. We are also contactable by phone or email anytime for assistance and further information.

Villa Kamares is fully insured. Cheryl takes care of the apartment cleaning as well as sheets, towels and spa robes. Guests need to bring beach towels, or they can be purchased in the small shops in the village.

Our good friend Konstantinos owns and manages 'Relaxika Massage Specialists' situated directly opposite Villa Kamares. We are happy to arrange any massages you would like on booking, or you can arrange yourself on arrival if you choose.

House rules are as follows: Panormo is a quiet, relaxing village and therefore noise should be kept to a minimum in the apartments especially between the hours of 3pm and 5pm when local people are resting during siesta time. Noise should also be kept to a minimum from midnight when the village is quiet. Smoking, pets, parties and events are not permitted in Villa Kamares.

The rooms were very comfortable. The kitchen had everything we needed for our two week stay. Renters need just be aware that there isn’t a proper living room and the sofa in the kitchen isn’t really comfortable for two people to sit back in the evening and watch a movie. The biggest selling point is the location in the village. You are right in the middle of everything and once you arrive, there is absolutely no need for a car. Beach, restaurants, bars, spas, city buses, and excursion buses are all practically at your doorstep.

Perfect quiet retreat beautiful villa would highly recommend
We stayed as a party of 4 (2 couples) the Villa has been lovingly restored by the owners with help from Stephanos (local guy) It retains all the charm but with modern bathrooms for your comfort . The people are very friendly and you soon become part of the village way of life. Lots of nice places to eat the Olive Tree was always our last port of call in the evening then a few steps and you were home, and a lovely beach to the left of the little harbour . In a good position to go out and see some local history. I would have no hesitation in recommending Villa Kameres

Great place to stay, in the heart of the village, steps from the beach. Perfect.
Lovely apartment based in the heart of a peaceful village by the sea. About a dozen restaurants on the doorstep, all serving a great selection of dishes. Beach is 30 seconds from the apartment, perfect for a day on the sun bed and a dip in the sea. The apartment itself served us well as a family of four (two teenagers, so wifi was heavily used). Great to sit on balcony and watch the world go by. Air con was a welcome relief after a day on the beach and made for a comfortable sleep at night. The spa pool was perfect for cooling off when it got too hot. A walk round Rethymno (reached easily and cheaply by bus) or numerous excursions are available nearby so plenty to do if you don't fancy the beach. We didn't hire a car and didn't miss it...Laura and Chris kindly set up the very efficient and comfortable taxi to and from the airport for us. Not much more to add...Chris and Laura were very helpful throughout as was Stefanos and Cheryl who coordinated the arrival. A great holiday in a lovely friendly village...thoroughly recommend...go for it!

Excellent Spa apartment in beautiful quiet village perfect for exploring North Crete
We have all fallen a little in love with Villa Kamares and the village of Panormo - one week was not enough so we shall have to return! The villa is new to the holiday rental market and so you will find everything is in perfect order. We were greeted upon our arrival by Chris who showed us around, we were impressed by the attention to detail with which the Villa has been restored. From the up to the minute spa pool to the sympathetically restored stone walls which can be seen throughout and the beautiful old front door. We settled into our apartment which was made all the easier by an initial supply of bread, milk etc. and a bottle of home made wine which my husband can certainly vouch for! The apartment is clean with beautiful bathrooms, there is Wi-Fi and air conditioning, fluffy soft towels and white cotton bedding. We enjoyed sitting on the balcony with a glass of wine and a good book and watching the world go by, (the street is closed to vehicles each evening) we watched as the swallows swooped around the balconies and on two occasions we saw a beautiful barn owl. Later we would wander down the cobbled street, which leads to the beach and sea and choose a taverna or go for a drink in one of the café bars. The village is quiet, small and friendly where everything goes to sleep around midnight. CAN RECCOMEND IN THE VILLAGE - A massage at Relaxika (opposite the villa) will put you at your ease perfect Fresh breakfast at Café Elia - will set you up for the day Coffee at Vinzi Café - excellent service good coffees and drinks with fabulous view Geronymos Taverna - good food be careful of the Raki! Thanks to Chris and Laura for all there kindness prior to and especially during our holiday, it has been fabulous. We will be in touch Thank you

About the host

Hosted by Laura & Chris Firth

Host profile image
Hi, we are Chris and Laura Firth, we live in Yorkshire, England with our children. We had a dream to restore an old tradiitonal building in a picturesque, friendly Cretan village. In 2008 we found our perfect property, originally built in 1912 and previously a family house owned by a Cretan couple named Kostas and Evangeline Honianakis. We fell in love with the village of Panormo and its people and had a dream to restore the building to its former glory whilst respecting the tradition and style of the area and to bring people of all nationalities to Panormo to enjoy the special village we fell in love with.

We spend a lot of time in Panormo whenever we are not working in England. We feel very much at home in Crete. The kindness of the people and their relaxed attitude feels great.
