About Nicole Piland

Being a Texas Tech University graduate and currently living in Lubbock, TX, Cloudcroft is one of the closest, 'best kept secrets' for escaping to the mountains. As an educator and a mental health professional I often encourage clients, friends and colleagues to be intentional about creating opportunities for renewal given the demands of everyday life. I fell in love with New Mexico the first time I visited nearby Ruidoso for a work retreat. During a return visit to Ruidoso, I took a day trip over to Cloudcroft, where I appreciated the much slower pace it had to offer. That visit resulted in a family vacation to a rental property in Young Canyon and the rest is history.

Nicole Piland purchased this house in 2014

Why Nicole Piland chose New Mexico

In November of 2013, I celebrated my birthday with a stay in Ruidoso that included a day trip to Cloudcroft. I enjoyed a delicious brunch at The Lodge and then spent the afternoon at White Sands in Alamogordo. Little did I know that the weekend getaway would be the start of many more visits to New Mexico. In the summer of 2014, I exposed my two children to the beauty of the Sacramento Mountains, rented a house in Young Canyon and fell in love with the area. It was always so difficult to head home. In September of 2014, the opportunity to purchase this vacation home became a reality! In the meantime, we plan to spend many long weekends and most holidays ‘in the clouds’ while we share our favorite place with others.

What makes this house unique

Based on several VRBO experiences, I came to appreciate certain amenities and details certain homes offered and as a result have made them available to you. You will notice all beds are double protected with mattress covers, linens are stored in sealed bins to reduce allergens, and the home is newly furnished with high quality rustic furniture and southwest décor throughout! You will feel like you are at a retreat during your stay.

This property also has the benefits of seclusion but easy access to the village. It offers the convenience of today's technology with Direct TV and wifi access throughout. But, with the close proximity to the Lincoln National Forest, you will likely find yourself outdoors more than indoors.

Basic supplies: shampoo, conditioner, body wash, Kleenex, toilet paper, paper towels and fire-starting sticks and lighters for enjoying the wood-burning stove are also provided. Guests will have access to the 2 car garage for parking and/or securing ATV's.

You just need to bring your own food for meals and a 'ready for the mountains' attitude.

We absolutely loved this cabin and the owner, as well!

First of all, when we got there we were excited to see it was away from any noise and secluded. Then, when we got in the cabin we noticed that there was a little gift for us to help us enjoy our stay! The cabin is spacious and has everything to make your stay complete! I, personally, took some groceries there and had casseroles premade so I wouldn't have to do as much, but if you take things to cook you should have everything you need.

Upstairs there is a second little living area where you can watch TV and take in the views of the mountains out the window, and a little play space for the kids if you take them along.

The bathrooms are huge, the bedrooms are spacious and the jetted tub upstairs is a great place to wind down for the day.

The owner is extremely prompt and friendly.

We will be going back, and maybe next time take some friends to share the experience with them!

Look for the Elk and raccoons! ❤️

Beautiful, Quiet, Relaxing!!!

  • 5 of 5

Loved staying at this house. The sunrises and sunsets are great and I took some really great pictures here. We saw multiple elk on the way in and out from Hwy 82. There are lots of colorful birds and ground squirrels as well. The house is about 1.5 miles from Hwy 82. We kept remarking how absolutely quiet it was there. All you could hear was an occasion wind through the pines, or an owl hooting. You forget how noisy things are around a city. The night sky was amazingly clear and I got some great milky way pictures (yes I am a photographer). We also took a trip to Sunset which is about 25 miles away. The drive there was very pretty and when you get to Sunset you are surprised to see several interesting Observatories. There are several large telescopes there that primarily study the sun. We were able to go inside some of the observatories and there is a visitor's center there (check the opening hours before you go). There are several hiking trails near Cloudcroft. We did two of them (Cloud-Climbing Trestle Trail & Bluff Springs Trail). The Bluff Springs trail is about half way to Sunspot. The Trestle Trail is right next to downtown Cloudcroft. We actually liked this trail the best because it is so well kept. At the end of the trail is a lookout platform that overlooks an old wooden train trestle. There are great scenic overlooks along the trail. It is somewhat steep in places to you need to be physically able to walk up and downhill on dirt and rocky terrain. There are also some stair steps to deal with. The Bluff Springs trail is much more hidden. The only real draw there is a small waterfall that is right next to the parking area. We enjoyed our hike there though. There is one real restaurant in town (Big Daddy's Diner). It has excellent food.

Overall the house is very nice and well stocked. The internet and Directv worked great. We parked our car in the garage each night. We followed all the written rules and should be getting our deposit back any day now (it takes about 12 days for the return).

I would fully recommend this house for anyone who wants to get away from it all and just soak in some peaceful silence and great views. We drank some wine on the large outdoor deck every night and watch the colorful Steller's Jays (a beautiful blue bird) eat corn that was supplied by the owner. There is also a propane patio heater if needed (we did not need it even though the temperature dropped to around 50 each night.

Anacortes, WA.

We plan to stay in this cabin, again whenever we are in this area.

A beautiful location, especially for late summer, when there were a lot of elk and other wildlife to see. Initially, being a couple of miles from the highway, felt a little remote but that isn't the case at all, because it's just about 10 minutes to town, restaurants and other services. We found the location is ideal. Peaceful.

This home is very nice, well kept and clean. The owner and caretaker were very attentive our needs.

We plan to stay in this cabin, again whenever we are in this area.

Amazing property ,Immaculate, Great location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed 5 days in this great cabin with another couple. There is plenty of room to have your own space. This location makes you feel very secluded but yet close enough to town to get a bite to eat. The cabin is well stocked with everything you will need in the kitchen, bathrooms & bedrooms for a great stay. The owners were quick to respond to any questions we had promptly. We will stay here again and recommend this to our friends and family.

The porch at night was amazing for star-gazing and wildlife viewing. It snowed several times while we were there and the large windows in the living area made it beautiful to watch. Bring your warm clothes and sit on the porch as much as possible. We kept the woodstove very busy on the chilly nights.
