Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday cabin in Bryson City - Nantahala Retreat

11-29-16 note: Fires in the area necessitated closing our house but we are now able to open it again. I've never been so grateful for rain! Also, endless thanks to all the firefighters who have worked for weeks in WNC saving our land and homes! Please remember local firefighters this holliday :-)

We welcome you to rejuvenate and play at our Nantahala retreat. Enjoy the peace and beauty of a secluded mountain home yet be less than 2 miles from the outdoor recreation mecca of The Nantahala Outdoor Center which has activities for every skill level, outfitters store, and restaurants!

The location of our cabin affords quick access to whitewater activities, the Appalachian Trail, Tsali Recreation Area, Fontana Lake (for swimming or rent a pontoon boat!), great restaurants, zip-lining, horseback riding, gem mining, outstanding fishing, hiking & mountain biking trails, waterfalls, Bryson City, Great Smoky Mountains Railroad, Deep Creek Recreation Area (fabulous hiking and tubing), Cherokee Indian Reservation, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, scenic drives, arts & crafts and more! Perhaps best of all, our cabin is very close to the Wesser Creek trail head. This entire trail is one of the most beautiful places in WNC. Kids (and the young at heart) can go a short distance to a great place to play in the creek, while those wanting to explore can take the trail 4 miles up to the Wesser Bald Fire Tower and see the astonishing 360 degree view!

Our cabin is also a wonderful place just to hang out. You can walk miles along scenic dirt roads right from the cabin, have a campfire, dine on the open deck, and just enjoy the lovely view and the energetic birds. Rainy days are opportunities to enjoy the Ping-Pong table, board games, extensive movie collection, and the covered deck. With three levels to spread out in, our cabin makes it easy to catch a nap while others play.

Whether you’re looking for adventure, wanting to connect with friends or family, or just seeking a beautiful place to rejuvenate, our Nantahala Retreat is an ideal place to create a memorable vacation.

About Carol May

My husband and I met at the NOC and share a great love for the woods and mountains of Western North Carolina, and, though we have traveled extensively, we find nothing we like more than our own backyard! Currently we live in Asheville, NC (just over an hour from the cabin) with our two teenage boys and two rescue dogs. We delight in having others discover what an amazing place the Nantahala area is. It's like being a kid and finding something fabulous -you just can't wait to share it!

What makes this cabin unique

We love being so close to the Nantahala Outdoor Center. Besides all the activities available at NOC, there is often live music in the summer and always great food. We like taking our dogs for walks from the cabin and love to sit on the deck enjoying the scenery or a good book. The town of Bryson City is only 15-20 minutes away, filled with more good restaurants, shops, and really friendly people.

Quite and relaxing.....

  • 5 of 5

This cabin is just around the corner from NOC and also very close to downtown Bryson City, but when you there it's so secluded you feel like your miles and miles away from everything! Hiking up to Wesser Bald ( which has an AMAZING view) then roasting marshmallows by the fire at night! We will difinatly be back!

Cozy and functional

  • 5 of 5

Our family of six, including two adults, two teenagers, and two younger kids loved this place. Beautiful secluded setting. Right down the street from the Nantahala Outdoor Center. I took three of the kids rafting. (The Nantahala happened to be my first white water river when I was a kid, so it was particularly fun for me to be able to take my 9 year old daughter on her first rafting trip on that river as well.) We scouted the rivers for fly fishing spots (because I will be back with my gear!). We actually spent a lot of time out on Wayah Road. Make sure to go to the Nantahala Lake. The teenagers and myself hiked all the way to Wesser Bald... 8 mile round trip up a bunch of switchbacks on the Wesser Creek Trail and then about a mile south along the AT. Unbelievable 360 degree view especially as the leaves were changing. Don't be fooled by the "No Tresspassing" signs on the way to trailhead (we were the first time). They refer to the road off to the right (found out by asking a local). The turnout for the trail is literally just over the hill beyond those signs. Also took my youngest to catch a few trout at the Otter Creek Trout Farm. Huge fish. Easy to catch (too easy really), but really nice owner with all the gear and you *will* have delicious fresh trout to grill. Call ahead since it's just him and he may be out during parts of the day. The house is very well equipped. We cooked every meal, and the only thing we brought that we needed was our espresso machine (hey, we were on vacation...) and our little juicer. The gas grill there is the best one we've used at a VRBO. We also had two bonfires. We had such phenomenal weather that we were able to see the disk of the Milky Way one of the nights we were roasting marshmallows. We also had two small crate-trained pups with us. The gates on the (huge!) deck were extremely helpful keeping them contained and happy and out of trouble. I'm still missing that deck. It was so nice that my kids spent a lot of their time reading out there. :)

Perfect mountain get away

  • 5 of 5

We had six family members for a fun packed weekend. The cabin is so convenient to the NOC. We were there Sat and Sun for rafting and zip lining. Great cabin for our getaway.

Down town Bryson City is real cute. Cork and Bean looked like a great ace to check out. We were not able to because needed reservations. Plan for early dinners out, restaurants close early.

Car: necessary

Our secluded home is just 1.2 miles from the amazing Nantahala Outdoor Center so it's easy to drop in for a riverside coffee or a delicious meal. The Tsali Recreation Area is also near by and is famous for it's Mtn. biking, hiking, and horse trails. We love to walk up the road with our dogs and our kids love exploring nearby Wesser Creek. Charming Bryson City is just 15 mins. away and has wonderful shops, activities, and dining options. Many homes in this area have treacherous driveways; Our home is on a well maintained dirt road that is easy to access without damage to car or nerves.
