About the property

Located on lakefront, Lake Erie water views from windows , porch, and deck,

An Old Lake House at Mitiwanga Park on the shores of Lake Erie is reminiscent of days gone by. This quirky 200 year old house has charm and character. The house retains a relaxing comfort, but has all the convenience of modern times. Entering form the East Drive porch there is a downstairs hall and bathroom. The open kitchen welcomes you with its sunny disposition and lake views. The kitchen has everything you would need for your stay and more. The large living room with refinished wood floors, comfortable seating, game table, chairs, and fireplace is though the kitchen doorway. It has inviting lake views from all the windows. Open the front door; you enter the enclosed porch facing the lake. There are places to sit down, read a book, have drinks, conversations, throw your beach towel down, and for those that love the sounds of the lake just rest and take a nap.

Up the stairs are the 3 spacious bedrooms all with lake views. The LOFT ROOM is cozy with a double bed and a loft area. The loft is sturdy enough for an adult and safe enough for an 8 year old. The DORM ROOM is roomy with 2 sets of twin bunk beds, a trundle bed, a double bed, and large dressing closet with vanity area. Step down one step to the S'MORE room with a set of twin bunk beds and a double bed. There is still room for a pack-n-play to be set up. A large bathroom with claw foot tub and laundry facilities are in between these two rooms. There are lake views from all the bedrooms.

Mitiwanga means the peaceful sand beach. Just step out on the enclosed porch on to the outdoor deck area, straight down the grassy hill are those beaches that Mitiwanga is named after. Sit on the front deck or the lake front benches and admire the view. On a clear day you can see Cedar Point and the islands of Lake Erie. About Laurie A Zepeda

The Hannon family originated from the Detroit area. Our family have been vacationing at Mitiwanga in this house since 1962. An Old Lake House was purchased by our father for his family's vacation place from my mother's Aunt Babe in 1969. Year round we spent many weekends at the cottage. When the summers came; we arrived at the lake as soon as possible after school was out and remained until school 's fall session began. All the Hannon children and our parents have lived here at one time or another for this is the place we call Home. Some of us still live close by.

Our family has had many happy memories at this wonderful place. We now want to share this special place so others can make magical memories of their own.

Laurie A Zepeda purchased this farmhouse in 1969

Why Laurie A Zepeda chose Huron

An Old Lake House has been standing for 200 years. It was the farm house of the land now known as Mitiwanga Park: it is the eldest building in the park. The main part of the home is a log cabin built in the New England style. This can be seen by the depth of the window sills and thickness of the walls. Most of the log walls have lath and plaster so the old world charm remains. Sunny paint and new paneling give it the fresh clean look that brightens up the interior. The flooring was completely changed in the 1920's and has been refinished back to its vintage beauty. Any replacement was with materials that are in character with its charm. All the appliances and mechanics of the house have been updated for the modern world. That is as much as the vintage house will allow itself to be changed without losing it uniqueness.

The abstract of it origin was lost in the flood of 1969 in Norwalk, Ohio. The paper trail found in recent times date to 1880's. After a recent storm that caused damage to the roof, the insurance investigator dated the house by its construction to around the 1820's. Newspaper reports, local stories, and some historical reports date it even further back to around 1813 linking it to Almon Ruggles, the surveyor of the Firelands Area. We have found other physical evidence that confirm this earliest date. The home has been added on to, reconstructed, remodeled, and with the modernization of its mechanics making it impossible to have it declared an historical home. We have chosen to declare it AN OLD LAKE HOUSE.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Mitiwanga chooses you! It offers you a tranquil, safe, and adventurous place to be a kid. It becomes a home, a refuge and hid away from the outside world. The area had been unknown for years, but is becoming a very popular and desired spot to visit. Once you have experienced all the area offers you won't want to go anywhere else.

When you stay at this old house please be mindful of its age. We have tried to add the convenience of our modern day, the comfort we have come to expect, and safety issues that ensure your rest. But the sagging floors, squeaks, and musty lake smells are something we feel adds character and charm to our old house. This is not something we can change or would we if we could. This house has aged with dignity and we hope you will acquiesce to its uniqueness. An Old Lake House even with all its quirks is still a relaxing, peaceful, and enjoyable place to visit. The Hannon's do hope you will enjoy the time you spend at our lake home.

Not our best experience

  • 3 of 5

Weather was terrible but I know you can't control that. The entire lake front of the house and all the lawn furniture was shrouded in cobwebs and the house is in bad need of power washing . We were unable to open the windows as spiders were also inside screens. Did not go out on patio after dusk as spiders so bad. Creepy. Flower beds very unkept. Loved the creeky floors and old character of the house. Will not rent again.

Owner's Response: Due to this summer's weather, Charlotte has been extremely productive. This has also made other exterior maintenance difficult to complete in the short time there is between guests. A simple call to the caretaker could have taken care of the reoccurring cobwebs. His number is posted in the house and in the entry instructions. Glad you loved the interior of this old house.

Welcoming home for a long weekend

  • 5 of 5

We used An Old Lake House as the venue for a mostly silent spiritual retreat, and it was just wonderful. The house was spacious enough for nine to gather in a circle and prepare meals without stepping on each other's toes. It had almost everything we could imagine in the way of kitchen gear and other equipment. But the real star is the views of the sky and waves out the large windows. We're already starting to look at the calendar to find a time when we can visit again.

Peaceful Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at this home very much. This is a very old and charming lakehouse that is directly on Lake Erie. The location and view is utterly amazing. The host has thought of every detail to make your stay comfortable. If you forgot something, there is a very good chance it is at the house. This home is very family friendly. There are nooks everywhere stocked with games, crayons, movies, etc. My only regret is that I couldn't stay longer. We rented the house because our son was getting married nearby. We didn't have time to enjoy it like we wanted to. The decor is very eclectic/shabby chic and FUN. The beds are comfortable and took me back to old times at my grandmother's house. If you are used to a king sized bed, prepare to get cozy! There are plenty of linens, dishes, etc. I highly recommend this home.

Great Vacation Spot for a Group

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is excellent! Well worth the money (great value in the off season) for an amazing view of the lake for sunset/sunrise pictures. I rented this cottage for myself and my bridesmaids during my wedding weekend. I'm from the area and family members own a cottage in the neighborhood so it was a perfect hub for a meeting place for all the wedding events between Sandusky and Vermillion. It was perfect for getting ready with everyone and served as a beautiful backdrop for some awesome wedding pictures. The value of this cottage was well worth. If adults don't mind sleeping in bunkbeds, it's a perfect location for a girl's weekend. Everyone had their own space and the living room, kitchen room and porch were large enough to accommodate everyone. The cottage is old and charming in the best ways, and the decor was modern and not annoyingly "Beachy" which is common in the area. The pictures really don't do it justice.
