Overview

About the property

Loft + 2 bedrooms on AuTrain River w/private waterfront near Lake Superior Beach

Conveniently located in the heart of the upper peninsula just minutes from Pictured Rocks, Lake Superior, dozens of waterfalls and endless outdoor activities and adventures. AuTrain River Cottages are located in a private association that is quiet and beautiful. There is about a 100 yards of river frontage to enjoy and relax next to. Cottages are pet friendly and range from one bedroom to 4 bedrooms and can accommodate from one to 8 guests. Each Cottage has all amenities included like WiFi, towels, linens, blankets, pillows and cooking supplies. There is a fire-pit area for guests to enjoy a fire w/a view of the river and wood can be purchased locally. Also included is a gas grill w/propane, and a canoe w/paddles and preservers. Launching of the canoe is on site and shuttle service is available. Additional kayaks are available for rent. A fishing boat w/motor are available to you on site for a discounted rate. Mooring your own boat is a possibility, contact me for details.

This Cottage, "DA Loft" is very old, it is a mixture of old log and pine interior with a new "old style" pine floor throughout. It is an open concept with cathedral ceiling and a nice sized loft. There is plenty of space and it easily accommodates 2-8 guests. This cottage is generally the most favored due to it's size and character. The front porch is big and it overlooks the river and has the best view of them all. There is a 43" HDTV w/Netflix streaming and WiFi along with plenty of seating in the living room area. There is a nice expandable dining table "circa 1950's" that will seat everyone staying. The kitchen is fully stocked for cooking meals. There are 2 queen beds and 2 double size beds in the cabin. There is a nice grill outside on the deck overlooking the river.

The AuTrain River provides excellent swimming, and canoeing/kayaking as it winds 12 miles through the Hiawatha National Forest. Further down river puts you into Lake Superior and quite possibly the best beach on all of Lake Superior. Up river is the beautiful AuTrain Lake which provides a wonderful place to enjoy water sports, fishing or just a relaxing cruise. Bass, Walleye or Pike are your most commonly fished.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore located in Munising is only 15 minutes away and there are over a dozen waterfalls within a 30 mile radius. The National Lakeshore provides days worth of outdoor activities. If you are into fishing, Trout and Salmon are the most commonly fished in Lake Superior.

I have seen nearly everything in this area and am a great resource during your stay. I will meet with you after you arrive and give you advice about the area and things you can enjoy during your vacation.

About Cory Cole

Plain and simply, I am a Yooper. I live locally year round and am a wealth of knowledge when it comes to exploring our area. I graduated high school and college here and I am an avid outdoors-man, I camp, hike, bike, kayak, ski, snowshoe, ATV, motorcycle, snowmobile and Jeep nearly the entire U.P. and if you have heard of it, chances are I've been there, or done that. I also know some places 'slightly off the radar' if you are looking to get away from the tourist areas. Just ask, I'll be happy to give you advice.

Cory Cole purchased this cottage in 2009

Why Cory Cole chose Au Train

I was a transplant to this area during high school years ago and left then came back. I couldn't stay away forever, this area is unlike any other. Sure there are beautiful places all over the country, but no matter where you are from, this place is special beyond words... This cottage is part of a private association with it's own river frontage. The property is the best on the river, it has a beautiful view, clean water with sandy bottom and plenty of space to relax. There are 10 cottages on this property (it was an old resort) I own/manage 7 of them for vacation rentals. I purchased these cottages with the intention of providing people a great place to stay, and the opportunity to enjoy our beautiful area. Overall, if someone doesn't enjoy staying here, it would be a first.

What makes this cottage unique

It is within 2 minutes of Lake Superior, one of the best beaches in all of Michigan, 15 minutes from Munising and the Pictured Rocks, dozens of waterfalls, hundreds of miles of hiking trails, biking trails and ATV/snowmobiling trails.(all available right from the cottage doorstep). AuTrain lake is accessible by boat right from the cottages and has tons of recreational opportunities.

Nice, comfortable cabin!

  • 5 of 5

Very cute cabin with all you need to have a comfortable stay. Beautiful, quiet location within minutes of Lake Superior and a short drive to Munising. Go the other way a couple of miles to Forest Lake and hook into some nice Smallmouth! We had a great visit and we'll be back!

Cozy cabin within small community

  • 4 of 5

A wonderful place to stay just outside of Munising. We didn't take advantage of all the ammenities but still had a great time. Inside is all that you need for a nice stay, kitchen plenty big, bedrooms nice and cozy, nice living room area. Surprised at how hot the water gets, but water has a slight metallic smell. You only really notice it in the shower. Fire pit is shared within the community but this did not prevent us from starting and enjoying our own fires.

Cory seems very low key, you could probably get by your whole visit without contacting him and just worry about yourselves. He has it setup so that you can be entirely self-sufficient if you want to be. If you plan on visiting Pictured rocks, it's about a 15 minute ride to Munising. We made several trips to Munising between touristy things and grocery trips, so we burned through a lot of mileage. If I knew how much driving we would do, I may have looked at places closer to Munising, all other things not being considered. If you plan on staying in the Au Train area, doing some kayaking (can be rented through the owners business) and lazing about, then this would be a perfect location.

Quiet and Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was perfect. It was very clean and had all the amenities needed for our comfort. It included a gas grill and all kitchen utensils, dishes and seasonings. We prepared most of our meals and ate at the cabin. All we had to do was make a trip to the grocery store. Everything was there for our needs. The cabin is right on the Au Train River. We sat on the front porch and enjoyed the peace and quiet. We took the canoe up river to Lake Au Train and spent the day fishing. The bed was comfortable with extra blankets available, if we needed them. It was only a 10 minute drive from Pictured Rocks. We will be back.

Relaxing River Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Looking for a quiet place on water, pet friendly, and at a reasonable cost, we found that in the Au Train River Cottage. We rented kayaks half way through the week, but wished we had done so earlier! We found going up river (although against the current) to the lake was the best. Paddling around Lake Au Train, then riding with the current back to the cabin was great and we couldn't get enough of it. Cory was very helpful in our sight seeing of local waterfalls and other places to visit (as well as which to avoid!). And the dogs loved romping in Lake Superior, just a mile or so up the road. The only negatives were the U.P. state bird (mosquitoes) and cell phone service (lack of). Neither of which detracted from an excellent stay on the river. We will be back!
