Overview

About the property

Large New Studio, Sleeps 2, French Doors to Private Patio, On 275' Lake Frontage

Come spend the fall in the Hudson Valley. Enjoy the sights & sounds of the country... all, from inside your cozy (totally private) Fox Den studio apartment. We provide all the comforts of home. Home baked cookies await your arrival. The Fox Den was designed with couples or a single in mind. Sorry, we cannot accommodate children or pets.

How about spending a romantic and cozy weekend in front of a warm fireplace, or perhaps to get lost in a good book on your private patio, overlooking the lake. You have found your perfect, private retreat, a place to relax and enjoy the quiet. We are on 20 acres of unspoiled woodlands, walking trails, pretty cottage gardens, as well as 275' of lake frontage.

We are on a private lake, motor boats are not permitted, allowing you to enjoy kayaking, paddle boating, fishing, or just floating around to your hearts content. (Boating season is May 1st - September 30th.) We have lounges by the lake, and a roomy hammock for two for swaying in the country air.

We have a pair of swans that visit every summer. Mallards, beavers, painted turtles, trout & small mouth bass, call this lake home. There are red fox, & deer (twin fawns are not that unusual). There are red tailed hawks & owls, beautiful north eastern birds and if you're lucky, you'll see an American bald eagle.

The Fox Den is decorated with our guests in mind, comfortable, with plenty of natural sunlight. A fully equipped kitchen with a full size oven & refrigerator. We also provide coffee & tea. A luxurious queen size bed with a lake view, and a private bath (towels are provided for both bath and lake). A stone patio, all to yourselves, with a gas grill, overlooking your private path to the lake. Your privacy is paramount to us (we respect that you are here for some peace & quiet).

If you want to drive about and see the countryside, there are many interesting destinations to discover, and most are close by. Antiquing, wineries, glorious estates, beautiful gardens, horseback riding, & delicious restaurants of all kinds. (The Culinary Institute is located in the heart of the Hudson Valley.) Bard college, the Richard B. Fisher Performing Arts Ctr., The Omega Institute, Opus 40, charming towns (such as Red Hook, Rhinebeck, Hudson, Tivoli, & Woodstock), farmers markets, seasonal orchards for picking your own fruit, & much more await your arrival.

We love it here, and know you will too.

Boating season is May 1st - September 30th.

About Jeanne & Jim Halpin

Jim & Jeanne

Jim and I both, are from Long Island, NY. Jim worked as an Operations Manager for an engineering firm, and I was a Computer Operator for a local township, and I also worked as an Administrative Assistant for many years. Jim did a lot of traveling for his job, and it took us to North Carolina. We really enjoyed living there; however, our families & friends were back on LI, so after a few years, we returned home. We always loved the north east's countryside and farmland. We would vacation in Vermont, but weren't ready to commit to their winters. We were really hoping to find a place that wasn't too far from LI.

When we were ready to make the move, we looked all over the tri-state area. When we arrived in Red Hook, we knew it was where we wanted to settle. We love the community, the people, and the most of all, the countryside.

We have 2 furry 'kids', Heidi - our dog, and Sam - our cat; and all the creatures on our property are an added bonus!

Jeanne & Jim Halpin purchased this apartment in 2006

Why Jeanne & Jim Halpin chose Hudson Valley

Upon seeing this property for the first time, we weren't sure we were ready for a such a huge undertaking. The property was quite neglected, and overgrown. The 1950's summer bungalow was tiny and housing a few critters. However, The mature trees were beautiful, and the lake, quiet & pristine. Hearing the wind rustling in the trees was hypnotizing. The task seemed daunting and overwhelming to me, but to Jim, he had found Nirvana! This property held such promise. It was a huge undertaking, and lots of work, but, all in all - we are so glad we stayed and pursued our country dream.

Exactly what we were looking for

  • 5 of 5

I didn't think a place this peaceful could be so close to New York City. Once you arrive in the Red Hook area, you already feel so relaxed. But taking the road to the Fox Den you know you're in for an extra special treat. The cabin was flawless; everything you need and an amazing lake view. Jim and Jeanne did an amazing job decorating the cabin, and the welcome cookies were delicious. My girlfriend and I ate them all! You won't regret staying here, and I hope to be back some day.

Wonderful studio

  • 5 of 5

SWIMMERS: note that the lake is clean and clear, BUT you will need water shoes as the entry is rocky and slippery. The place is immaculate. You will not have to bring all those pesky things usually needed for a rental: Jeanne has provided everything needed but your clothes and perishables: s & p, sugar, coffee, tea, spices, oil, soaps, paper goods, flashlights, hair dryer, lake toys - noodles and floats, games, books .... etc,. etc. This place is QUIET (except for the owl). RAIN; the view is pretty, there are games, a gas fireplace, and LOTS to do in the area - a great base for visiting all the historic houses, charming towns, wineries, and farms. It is really only for a couple - one queen bed only. Although the owners are upstairs, you have a sense of complete privacy. Definitely recommend.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your wonderful review! We're happy to hear you enjoyed your stay. Just a note: we do have water shoes for our guests, in the bin by the lake. I'm sorry you didn't realize that. It was a pleasure meeting you both. We hope to see you again. Sincerely, Jeanne & Jim Fox Den

How Far Is Heaven?

  • 5 of 5

It turns out, for us, it is only about an hour and a half from home. The Fox Den is just about perfect. The location, the accommodations, the little details and perks, all add up to a relaxing and renewing week on the lake. The hosts, Jeanne & Jim have thought of just about anything you could need to make a vacation of any length as carefree as possible. If you wanna hang out you'll want for nothing. If you like to explore you have the Catskills, the Hudson River, Hyde Park, Woodstock, Rhinebeck and more all within a short drive. There's golf nearby, plenty of farm stands for local produce (in season) as well as breweries, distilleries, upscale shopping and some excellent restaurants to fit anyone's fancy. But the highlight of course is the well appointed Fox Den and Spring Lake on which it sits. Our stay may have been the closest thing we'll ever have to a true Zen experience.

Location

Car: necessary

The Fox Den is in the perfect location. We are 10 minutes (or less), to our town of Red Hook, which is a wonderful small town with some great restaurants and shops. Our favorite place to hunt for old, country antiques and treasures is Hoffman's Barn. It's in Red Hook, behind the movie theatre. Another is Living Eden, one of my favorites.

Only 20 minutes from us is Rhinebeck, which is an artsy, interesting town. Everyone flocks to Rhinebeck! It's a wonderful town, with it's history, restaurants and shops. Home to the Beekman Arms Inn, the oldest continuous running inn in America. The food is excellent. The pub (located in the back) is a step back in time, warm and cozy. The greenhouse is located in the front of the restaurant, where you can view the lovely town. Also, Terrapin restaurant and Gigi's Trattoria are delicious places to dine and have seating both inside and out.

The Hudson Valley is home to the CIA (Culinary Institute of America), which is why our chefs are outstanding!

The Dutchess County Fairgrounds are also in Rhinebeck. Please check out their website. They host plenty of fairs throughout the summer into the fall.

We have lots to do in the Hudson Valley and plenty of towns to visit, Hudson, Tivoli, Hyde Park, Red Hook and Rhinebeck; and across the river are Woodstock, New Paltz, & Saugherties, just to name a few

Come and visit us!
