What makes this house unique

There are very few lakes which directly abut a federally protected wilderness- this is one of them. McFarland Lake borders the 1 million acre Boundary Waters Wilderness. From the dock you can literally paddle right into the wilderness via two access points: John Lake, and Pine Lake. There is also the famed Border Route Hiking Trail, which lies out the back door. Take a hike along the high bluffs that comprise this part of Minnesota. You can see for miles into the wilderness and beyond...

Beautiful cabin and location

  • 5 of 5

We had a great few days on McFarland Lake. The cabin was beautiful, clean and comfortable. Nice sauna too. Perfect location with the BWCAW just a paddle away at either end of McFarland.

A relaxing and adventurous time!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed the cabin and the lake. The fur babes did too. It was nice to be secluded but town was close enough to grab dinner one evening. We used the pontoon every day. Took the canoe out across McFarland lake twice. And one day we went to the lake next to McFarland. We got caught in the rain but it was fun. Hiked the border route trail twice. The terrain was interesting being swamp like but it made the hike more adventurous. And saw the beautiful views of McFarland lake and Canada nearby. It was great being able to take the dogs with us everywhere. Everything was dog friendly for two corgis and a hound. Everyone was friendly at McFarland Lake.

Great!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had a great time at this cabin. It was a late-season October trip so very quiet. We have a 10 and an 8 year old, and spent our days paddling, hiking, or just hanging out at the cabin by the campfire. The cabin was clean, comfortable, and much cozier than the pictures indicate. I very much appreciated the ample supply of firewood, and the kitchen was well-appointed. Solar system kept up with us, but we did have to run the generator a few times as the days were getting pretty short. We used the sauna every evening and it was a great way to end the day!

One note for you Pete: the cane on the stern seat on the Bell canoe fell apart when we first used the canoe, I had to rig up a fix for it which I left in place. Very usable, but not the best looking!

It is a beautiful cabin on a beautiful lot

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely time and were very comfortable. Fishing and reading during the day and enjoying the sauna and camp fire at night.

Yard and wood need a bit of tidying and the cabin needs a good cleaning and floor washing. It would have been a nice touch for the host to have provided a big bottle of potable drinking water as part of the rental fee.

But all in all we had a very pleasant time and would like to visit again.

quiet, relaxing stay at McFarland Lake

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our time on McFarland Lake. We felt like we were the only two people on the whole lake. Canoeing was awesome and the cabin was close to hiking and close enough to all the towns along hwy 61.

Thanks Pete and Amy!

Cozy and Charming in a beautiful Setting

  • 5 of 5

We loved every thing about our week at this cabin from the picturesque views, the sauna, the wood burning fire place on chilly nights, the big picnic table on the deck for meals, the canoe to use to spend time in the boundary waters and the location to many forest roads to ATV to places like Devil Fish Lake. It is truly the perfect size cabin with the log interior it truly feels what a northern Minnesota cabin trip should feel like. Our lab loved jumping off the dock and swimming in the crystal clear water and the loon calls while sitting on the dock was our absolute favorite part of being at the lake. Pete was great to work with, so accommodating and great at communicating what we would need to bring before we get up there. Thank you for sharing your piece of paradise!
