Luxury Penthouse with shared Roof Terrace and view of Etna, sea

Bedrooms 5
Space 3,767 sq. ft.
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 1 - 2 nights

About the property

Luxury, 5 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, shared panoramic roof terrace, Catania

Penthouse Asmundo is without a doubt the most envied apartment of Catania.

Located in one of the majestic historical buildings that form the four corners of Piazza Mazzini, it has its entrance at the beginning of the oldest and most famous fish market of Italy.

The valuable furnishings are a travel between the sacred and the profane, the art and history of Sicily, a land of timeless and enigmatic charm. All rooms are spacious and bright. The attention to details is remarkable: warm and cozy colours, authentic decorations, the most modern comforts, luxury linen sheets and hand-stitched mattresses.

From the terraces and the roof garden the best of Sicily is offered in front of your eyes: the glittering sea, the baroque buildings, the bell towers, the dome of the Cathedral of Sant'Agata, the colours of the market and finally, the Etna, the beating heart of Sicily, which dominates and embellishes with its continuous eruptions Catania’s skyline.

Penthouse Asmundo occupies the second last floor - the third floor - of Palazzo Asmundo (with elevator).

Penthouse Asmundo opens to a gorgeous hall leading first into the elegant and eclectic living room, and then into the dining room with modern kitchen overlooking Piazza Mazzini. There are five double bedrooms with hanging beds and high quality mattresses, and five en-suite bathrooms with spacious showers. One of the five bedrooms is a true suite with even a small living room and a piano.

All rooms have air conditioning, Internet and satellite television.

The upper floor can be reached by going back to the stairwell or the lift. This is the floor of the panoramic terraces with a solarium and a roof garden, but also the floor of a professional kitchen, exceptionally equipped to prepare all delicacies sold at the market down on the streets.

Please note that the terraces and the second kitchen are shared with the guests of the boutique hotel that occupies the lower floors of the same building.

All prices include two hours of daily cleaning.

In the afternoon, after the market, you can park your car under the building. Alternatively, we recommend you the paid parking on the street around the Castello Ursino (5 min. walking) or a covered parking garage at 15 min. on foot.

As awesome as it looks on the pictures

  • 5 of 5

Very very fancy flat, with enough space for the whole group. Though most of the time we stayed upstairs on the rooftop and in the big kitchen. Perfect place to hang out at night or for breakfast in the morning!! Also Guilia was very helpful before, regarding all questions I had. Mille Gracie for that!!! And to you out there still thinking about the price: Do it, its more than totally worth it!

Beautiful and comfortable apartment

  • 5 of 5

5 of us shared this beautiful town house. This town house is first class in in every way. It is very large, fully equipped with a first class kitchen and wonderful furnishings. It is located in a convenient location so that it was easy to get around the city. The street that it is on is a bit "funky" and each morning there is and fish/meat market. The top floor is a penthouse with a fabulous deck with wonderful views of the city. The penthouse also has a first class kitchen and adds another dimension to the rental experience.

Our stay was Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the penthouse apartment and had access to the private rooftop patio with full kitchen. The place is spectacular, clean, modern bathrooms, and a really friendly helpful staff. All 5 bedrooms and bathrooms were extremely comfortable, spacious and beautiful. There is a farmers market outside the door everyday except Sunday till 2pm so we were able to even cook a few meals for ourselves with local produce, cheese and meat. I highly recommend the property for a great stay.

Amazing Easter Weekend

  • 5 of 5

Our group of six friends drove into town on the Friday of a busy Easter holiday weekend and the owner, Guenter, was standing on the corner holding a primo parking place on the street for us. He introduced us to Gianni, the gardener, and Patricia, the housekeeper, and they proceeded to give us a tour of the house - a beautiful palazzo with five en suite bedrooms, each more beautiful than the next!

The house is beautifully furnished in a wide range of art styles, from traditional religious objects to uber-modern paintings. Each bedroom has mini balconies with views of either the piazza or the produce market (don't worry, the fish part of the market is several blocks away so the house does not smell fishy!) On the main level with the bedrooms there are also a smaller sitting room, a large dining room and a sixth bathroom. The bathrooms are spotless and have everything you'll need including modern fixtures, both a toilet and a bidet and plenty of hot water and water pressure. Each bedroom comes with its own key to the house.

The best part of the place is upstairs, where there is a huge modern kitchen and farm table as well as a beautiful rooftop terrace with views of the duomo and the volcano and everything in between. The multi-level terrace is overflowing with beautiful flowers and has sun loungers, a dining table and yet another bathroom. The kitchen has a coffeemaker as well as a more fancy cappuccino/latte machine. Stainless steel refrigerators and freezers house wine, bottled water and a huge bag of ice! (Ice had proven to be extremely hard to find in other places in Sicily). Guenter, Gianni and Patricia had a fabulous Easter welcome spread set out for us, which we snacked on the whole weekend. There was also plenty of great wine in the house at our disposal.

A few other things:

- Patricia comes each day to clean, and will also do laundry if needed.

-The house is up several flights of marble stairs but they will bring your luggage up for you in the elevator.

- Since the house is right on the big main market, there is noise from early in the morning, esp in the rooms facing the market. It's also a late night town so you can hear people and music fairly late.

- Everything you want to see is town is in walking distance.

Overall, just an amazing experience to stay here and if we come back to Sicily, which I hope we do, we will build our itinerary around another stay at this house!

Palace is certainly the right word for it.. <3

  • 5 of 5

A high-end five bedroom, five bathroom, luxury penthouse palace, right in the heart of Catania, set over two floors, with a roof garden and terrace, two huge kitchens, full of art, and an outstanding view of the mighty Mount Etna. I wrote a whole blog post about my time in Catania and at this property (including a video with a run through of the whole apartment) 👉 you can find it at thecutleryhronicles . com. Thank you Guenter and company for a wonderful experience!

Palazzo Asmundo of Gisira was built after the destruction of the earthquake of 1693 in Catania. It demonstrated the financial and organisational strenght of the Church, of the monastic orders and of the aristocracy, who invested sufficient money to rebuild the city from its foundations. A huge building project started and it foresaw a wide use of black lava. In fact, the black Baroque characterizes the city. Palazzo Asmundo is a secular building in Catania. It was built in San Filippo Neri square, now called Mazzini, which some travellers defined as “the most beautiful square in the city”. Located along Via Garibaldi, the square is surrounded by 32 columns of Roman Age which overlook the facade of Duomo and the Ferdinandea Gate. Palazzo Asmundo is situated in the south-east corner of the square. Its facade is decorated with an attractive coat of arms of the Asmundos of Gisira. The building was designed by the solemn architect Giuseppe Palazzotto and its construction was ordered, in 1704, by Adamo Asmundo.

Mount Etna is the largest active volcano in Europe. It occupies an area of 40 by 60 km and is 3300 meters high, dominating all over the northeast of Sicily. A stay in the province of Catania is an excellent choice for travelers who are interested in the volcano Etna and its impact on its surrounding cities and villages.

Almost two million people live in the vicinity of the volcano. Since most of the explosion occurs at high altitudes there is no danger to the public. Anyway, in the past about ten villages have been destroyed because of the passage of the lava. The city of Catania was once destroyed by lava flowing from secondary craters at a lower level, called "the Montirossi", on the southern side of the mountain.

From various parts of the city you can admire the volcano that dominates Catania from above. In times of increased volcanic activity Catania citizens can hear in their gardens the roar of exploding masses of lava. From the terrace of Penthouse Palazzo Asmundo you can enjoy a perfect view of the important presence of the volcano over the city. The volcano is very much beloved by the Sicilians. The city of Catania is in fact linked in all its aspects to the presence of Mount Etna. The city is mostly built with gray-black basalt stones and is called in Italy the 'Dark City', la città nera. The volcanic rock is indeed, due to frequent eruptions, very present and in many downtown streets you can see old lava flows. The facades of Baroque palaces are often adorned with angels and flowers, but the dark gray color and the lack of adequate street lighting in the streets of Catania gives a heavy look to the city for people who are visiting for the first time. In the warm summer evenings in August this feeling is also enhanced by the heat that rises from the floor of the roads. It happens when the black stones of the streets have been exposed for the entire day in the heat of the sun and at sunset they begin to release heat.

The best times to visit Sicily range from September until mid-July. Between January and April you can ski in the morning on Mount Etna (Rifugio Sapienza or Piano Provenzano), and in the same afternoon enjoy the sun and a refreshing dip in the Ionian Sea near the volcanic beaches of San Giovanni Licuti or Aci Trezza (north of Catania). In 1669 a massive lava flow buried part of the city. What was left standing was later destroyed by a powerful earthquake in 1693 which reduced the whole of eastern Sicily in rubble and ashes. Later the city was rebuilt in the same architectural style (late) Baroque and Art Nouveau. Take a stroll along the buildings of the city with their huge front doors, reload your battery with an espresso or a refreshing 'mandarin al limone', which can be purchased at the kiosks in Catania that are typically based on the town square. Piazza Duomo and Piazza Università, two majestic squares, are at the beginning of Via Etna, the north-south axis of the center. Not far away from Piazza Duomo there is the fish market. The fish market is competing for the title of 'most' fascinating fish market in the world ', and some experts say only the fish market in Tokyo surpasses it. The delicacies of the Mediterranean Sea are mixed with the scent of the other products on the market, fresh bread, herbs, olives, pears and other products for an excellent lunch. You'll notice the fish sellers eat raw mussels to demonstrate that they are fresh. Other highlights of the market are very big swordfish and tuna. It is therefore a quite special market, where merchants will offer you with passion their treats.
