WE FOUND THIS HOME TO BE JUST THE RIGHT SIZE FOR OUR GROUP OF 16. WE LOVED THE SCREENED IN PORCH IT HAS A BIG BED TO REST AND RELAX. OUR GROUP CONSISTED OF 16 PEOPLE FROM 1 TO 60 YEARS OLD. WE ALL HAD A GREAT TIME. WE PLAYED WITH THE GAMES AND READ THE BOOKS THAT WERE AT THE HOUSE. OVERALL WE LOVED THE PLACE. RAY WAS VERY HELPFUL WITH ALL OF OUR CONCERNS.
Each year we gather together as a family of 8 adults and 8 children for a week in the mountains. The Wilderness at Mentone provided ample space for outside activities, and the swimming hole down a 15 minute hiking trail was a special attraction. The large house is a refurbished farmhouse with plenty of sleeping areas and bathrooms, and the many nooks and crannies were well explored by the children. As to be expected in an old house that has been modified and added on to, there are a few unexpected quirks (light switched in odd places for example). Also be aware that the nearest grocery store is 7 or 8 miles away. We enjoyed the easy access to some areas that we wanted to visit, such as Lookout Mountain, Cloudland State Park, Desoto Park, and Ft Payne, Al. Finally, the owners were easily available, and they could not have been more hospitable. Overall, a very nice place to spend a week. SD
Thank you Ray and Bobbie for allowing us to enjoy your farmhouse experience. You were great hosts! We all loved the maze of rooms and plenty of couches everywhere. Feeding our crew of 18 was so easy with the spacious kitchen layout. The field was perfect for ultimate frisbee and baseball. The swimming hole was the favorite of everyone. The trek down to it was a bit challenging but so worth the effort. The rain on the tin roofed porch was delightful!!! Your place is a great retreat site to enjoy all of God's creation.
This was the most unique house I have ever stayed at. The decor was interesting, filled with antiques. The owners were friendly and helpful. The screened in back porch was my favorite spot.
We had a wonderful time.
We were looking for a place that could sleep a lot of people and not break the bank, upon doing a Google search the Wilderness popped up. We knew immediately that this was the place for our retreat. When we arrived we were taken in by the sprawling house, it is amazing, and certainly large enough that a group of 20 adults and high schoolers, and one toddler did not feel crowded. The hiking and swimming hole were big hits, but the best part of the whole trip was using the house as the setting for a live action game of Clue. The students had a blast using the hats in the lounge and coming up with their character and spending the whole evening trying to figure out who done it. Thank you to Bobbie and her enthusiasm, the grounds are beautiful, and I can not wait to see pictures of the fairy garden when complete.
My immediate family 7 adults and 9 grandchildren were attending a family reunion nearby in the Mentone area. Everyone enjoyed the spacious house, the pond, trails, swimming hole and being in the great outdoors. I introduced my young grandsons to turtles, minnows in the pond, song birds and many different bugs. The big thing was enjoying the 20 acres and no noise. We are indebted to Ray and Bobbie (the owners) for making our time at their house the best. We plan on renting the house for a few more extra days next year. Definitely, a blessing from God.
