About dorothy donald

I have owned the house since 1999 and lived in it personally for 15 years. We both work for the airline and love to travel so listing my house with all of the amenities of home was a great idea to me. I love St. Augustine as I attended Flagler College and fell in love with the oldest city in the United States. The beaches are beautiful and the history of St. Augustine are dear to my heart. There are fabulous art galleries and restaurants and if you are into quaint beautiful towns like I am you will love St. Augustine and Vilano Beach.

dorothy donald purchased this house in 1999

Why dorothy donald chose St. Augustine Area

The Mermaid Beach house is a great retreat for a girls getaway, family vacation or romantic weekend. The location is perfect, an almost private beach is directly across the street. Ponte Vedra Beach is 15 minutes North on A1A and Downtown St. Augustine is 10 minutes South. There are great fresh seafood restaurants within walking distance that will not disappoint . The house has all the amenities of home, fully stocked kitchen, linens, towels, and a gas BBQ grill for dining and entertaining at the house.

What makes this house unique

The "A" frame offers 3 levels for privacy as the bedrooms are on each floor and the downstairs bedroom has a separate living area with a large flat screen.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I recently stayed with my family at this great beach house and thoroughly enjoyed the amenities of the home. The beach was great for my sons to surf. We were able to walk to nearby restaurants as well as grill out on the deck and enjoy the sunsets. This house was beautifully decorated and we will certainly return soon for some more fun in the Florida sun!

Girls Weekend

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at the Mermaid House with my girlfriends for a getaway and it was great! The house was very clean, decorated so cute and we had every thing we needed! There was plenty of room for everyone, just bring your clothes. The views are fantastic from the front and bank of the house and we spent long hours on the deck catching up with our classes of wine. There are great restaurants blocks away and fun attractions just a few miles down the road in St. Augustine. We will definitely be back!

Overpriced, poor maintence, unresponsive owner

  • 1 of 5

When I first contacted the owner about renting her property, I was very clear that I didn't want the rental to be a distraction during my visit.

Four days after hurricane Matthew passed through, I gave the owner a chance to cancel the transaction if the property was damaged. I was assured it was already rentable.

The problems started immediately. I had to buy WD-40 from the Publix down the road to lubricate the locks because the keys would stick to the point I thought they would snap off.

I think the owner intentionally misleads prospective renters by not disclosing there is an ancient spiral staircase in the center of the house. There is no picture of it in the listing. It by no means meets modern building codes. It's too narrow, the rise of the steps is too short, and there are no handrails. The steps are bare, polished, and extremely slippery. Simply moving luggage up and down the stairs was a challenge. My dog tumbled down them the first time she used them. Luckily she is OK.

The A/C unit never cooled the house, which smelled musty. I had shut to shut it off the first morning of our visit because the outside Freon line was frozen over and I didn't want the compressor to fail. I contacted the owner and the excuses started immediately. Only after I demanded a decision on whether she was going to fix the A/C did she offer to send someone to look at it. I had to leave my son's wedding reception and drive across town to let the 'technician' in. He's actually the owner's handyman and happened to be working on a storm-damaged property across the street. All he did was turn the unit back on, put his hand over a vent and declare that it was cooling. Needless to say, he was wrong. The unit never got below 77 degrees, and that low occurred at 6 AM the second morning when it was 10 degrees cooler outside. It's obvious the condenser unit is poorly maintained. The cooling fins are clogged with dust and the unit is covered with rust.

The rental is poorly maintained. Burned out light bulbs, peeling kitchen cabinets, broken microwave, electrical outlets that were either broken or so worn that chargers simply fell on to the floor when plugged in. Both gates on the deck were broken and had to be blocked with chairs to keep the dogs in.

It needs a deep cleaning. The linens on the bed I slept in were bleach-stained and smelled musty. The lawn furniture was covered with mildew.

The owner is very unprofessional. Pass on this rental.

Owner's Response: Wow, is all I can say to this one! First of all I must say that I personally was there with my family 3 days after hurricane Matthew to make sure my home was in good condition and rentable. The neighborhood had major devastation and I am lucky and thankful my home had little damage. Jim contacted me to see how things were, and Never asked to get out of the rental as I would have gladly let him. I will address his issues one by one so my future renters know my house IS maintained and Cleaned properly. I had just left 3 days prior to him coming in so I am not sure why he had to use WD-40, it worked when I was there, but it is the Beach and things can rust overnight!! I do not mislead that there is a spiral staircase . It is new by the way, not ancient, and made with beautiful wood there are also grip handles on the walls to hold as you go up the stairs. There are also fewer stairs outside to bring bags in thru the front door. He texted me about the AC, my handyman was directly across the street and he went immediately over to check on the unit. It WAS cooling! The AC outside unit took some damage from the storm which looked bad but the unit was still cooling which I verified by my handyman. I imagine he had the front doors to the patio open and the AC on and this house takes a while to cool down as it is an "A" frame. He also cranked the thermostat down which made the unit freeze up. I had a Brand New AC installed this week. He did not have to leave the Wedding as my handyman has keys. I have a professional cleaning done after every renter and the house is extremely clean. The only truth to his comments are the gate blew off the side patio due to the storm and the maintenance man was going to fix that. Jim also had 2 dogs at my property which I only thought there was 1 dog, which I do allow, and only paid for 1 dog. There was a burned out light bulb in one of the light fixtures I was unaware of but was an easy fix. I have never been called unprofessional in my life as I work with the public on a daily basis and try to please people rather than have them upset about something. All I can say is my house is beautiful and most people love it. I think Jim was probably looking for excuses to try and get out of the rental, he was probably asked to leave his own son's wedding because he was not a very nice man to deal with. I think this renter would have complained if he was at a 5 star resort and the Red carpet was rolled out for him! I did my best!

Great property, very comfortable

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at the Mermaid Beach House. The beds are comfortable, the kitchen has everything you need, and the beach is within walking distance. We thought the house was very clean and seemed well-kept. The porch is fantastic to sit out on in the evenings and enjoy the breeze. The house also had lots of towels and other things we were allowed to use. All in all, very comfortable. We did have a person who slept on the couch in the living room and that room would get very warm in the mornings. It's understandable though because the living room has very large windows (beautiful!!) that face east, so the sun shines directly in until about 1 pm. The lower windows have blinds to cover them, but the upper windows do not. The windows allow for lots of natural light, but aren't ideal for temperatures in the day :) However, we were there during a particularly hot week, so would imagine it's not quite as warm all the time. We had a couple plumbing issues during our stay, but the owner was extremely responsive and got things fixed right away. Overall, I would recommend this property for a group of about 6 and fewer, very comfortable and convenient.

Loved!

  • 4 of 5

There were 6 of us in this home and we absolutely loved it. Good location, nice beach across the street, very cute home. I got the deposit back in a very timely manner and murrell was quick to respond to my questions. The only negative thing was that the outdoor grill did not work and needs to be replaced. Other than that, I would say it is a great find in a beautiful city!!

Great location but needs some TLC

  • 3 of 5

The upside of this property is that it is in a great location. The beach is right across the street and it was beautiful and quiet. The drive in to St. Augustine is about 15 minutes. St. Augustine is one of my favorite places to visit!

The property, however, was a little disappointing. The deck was a mess. There was debri, wet towels, rusted furniture, dirty cushions and dead plants. You have to carry all your luggage up the rather steep, long stairs to access the property so the deck is the first things you see. The house was very nice overall but it needed a good cleaning. There was dust everywhere, the tub was clogged with hair, cobwebs on the lamps and the dishes in the china cabinet had to be washed before you could use them.

As previously mentioned, there is only 1 1/2 baths. We managed but it was myself and my two sisters so for three women it was a bit of an inconvenience. Also, the stairs are very narrow and steep so getting a large suitcase up there was a challenge. The third bedroom is the loft so it is open. Not much privacy and you can hear all the noise from the living room below. I think the description of this property needs to be changed to reflect the true bedroom and bath situation.

The other things we did not realize is that there is another tenant living downstairs. He was not there the first couple of days and we had no idea that there was even an apartment downstairs. We thought it was just a storage area. He came home during the night and we were more than a little shocked to see a man coming out of the basement the next morning. He said we were not the first visitors to be surprised. Again, I think this should be noted in the description or at least conveyed by the owner when you make the reservation.

Lastly, it took over 6 weeks to get the deposit back. I have stayed in many properties through the Homeaway web site and I have never had these issues before. This could be a very nice property but it needs some attention.

Owner's Response: In response to this guests comments, I was never notified the deck was a mess, I have a professional maid service after every guest, and there should never be a mess or dust or towels on the deck. This guest never informed me of the issue or I would have immediately addressed the situation with the maid company. As far as the deposit goes, I had a family emergency, my brother passed away and it took me an extra week to process. I thought the system refunded it but it was not set up properly and I had to mail a check. It typically does not take that long and I explained this and apologized for the delay due to my brothers death and family emergency. My property does have stairs, a regular one story staircase going up to the deck. There is also another entrance on the other side with a wider staircase and fewer steps. I also have an owner's unit downstairs that gets rented on occasion to personal friends or I stay there myself when I am in town visiting family as I live out of state now. This should have no issue on the tenant on the upper 2 levels. Update: 8/17 The house has now been upgraded to include the downstairs apartment included with the entire house, the stairs have been opened up and the house is now being rented as one entire house. The stairs and deck boards have been replaced. I also have a new maid company which does a fantastic job. There is a full bedroom and living area and wetbar and bath downstairs. This now makes 3 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths and an additional sleeping area in the oceanview loft that sleeps 2.

Cute house

  • 4 of 5

Cute rental house with excellent beach access. Nice decor and the deck is great. Renters should take note that it's only 1.5 bath, not 2 full baths. The upstairs bathroom does not have a tub/shower. We specifically searched for a 2 bath rental so were disappointed to discover this upon arrival. There were also a ton of spiders around. I mentioned this to the owner and she said she would call the exterminator. A regular sweeping of webs outside the door would probably help with the issue too, as there were lots of webs around the door and the stairs leading up to the entrance. Only other issue was the 3 and a half weeks it took to get our deposit back. The house itself was in good shape and the kitchen had all we needed for our stay. We had a fun week at the beach. Great location for seeing St Augustine...it's a quick little drive to town.
