Sparta is a quiet small town with a lot to offer. For the bicycle enthusiast we are the Bicycling Capital of America. Whether you bring your own bikes or rent them you will have easy access to 100's of miles of scenic rail beds including several historic tunnels. For the motorcyclists we are part of the Driftless Region of hilly, winding country roads.
During the warmer months Sparta has the 18 hole River Run golf course and a new city aquatic center with a zero entry pool, giant slide and lazy river. There are also canoeing and kayaking opportunities on several nearby waterways. The Mississippi River is just 30 minutes away with its majestic scenery and river boats.
We are also home to Fort McCoy, an active Army training base, complete with its museums. During the winter it also has a small skiing/tubing hill open to the public.
More information on Amish tours, local museums, shopping opportunities and special events is available from the Sparta Chamber of Commerce.
Big kitchen , outdoor grill and dining room made this house so nice for dinner celebrations. Sat on the front porch for morning coffee and happy hour wine. We enjoyed the many trails in the area and helpfulnes of Speeds bike shop too for rental and info.
Your charming Prairie House offers plenty of room for a large group; it is also ideal for my aging father, with only a few steps into the house and all the rooms on one level. As a frequent business traveler, I much prefer this comfortable and charming home over any hotel, and it's wonderful to prepare organic meals, not easily found in restaurants. We also appreciate the aromatherapeutic soap and convenient washer and dryer. My "Mum" said she was delighted to read a poetry book, one of the many extras this home offers its guests. We talked and laughed, and laughed some more! Thank you Solberg family for this treasured get-away with my parents.
9 of my family and friends just spent 3 nights at Prairie House and it exceeded our expectations. Plenty of spaces to have conversations, well stocked table and silverware and comfortable beds. Sparta is a special small town with activity for young to old alike. Amish country so near by is another outing destination.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Prairie House. The restored home was spotlessly clean, and had everything we needed to accommodate six women for a weekend of biking and relaxing. Thank you for being so respnsive to questions and offering such a lovely home.
We were awestruck by the historic Prairie House! It is beautifully decorated and had plenty of eating and living space for our group of 6. We found tables linens and candles in the drawers and it felt like we were eating at a fancy restaurant every night. The kitchen had modern appliances and everything we needed. I loved the old-fashioned bathroom fixtures and couldn't resist the oversized bathtub! We stayed 2 nights and went canoeing in Ontario and biking in Sparta. Speeds Bike shop was fantastic! Especially nice was Eric, the owner. He promptly responded to all of my questions prior to our visit and even stopped by to make sure all was well and gave us a short history of the place, even though, unbeknownst to us at the time, his wife was waiting in the car. A nice touch was the fresh flowers from their garden shop 2 blocks away - also a great place! We are from Denver, but if we lived closer, we would definitely come back.
We stayed for a week at Prairie House and enjoyed every minute of our stay. Close to many outdoor activities with the benefit of coming home every night.
