Elegant, Quiet, and Sunny 2-Bedroom in Historic Brownstone, Brooklyn, NYC

Bedrooms 2
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Private and full of natural light. Loft-like top floor apartment in a turn-of-the-Century limestone row house, located on a quiet block in historic Brooklyn. Tastefully decorated in an eclectic style with a nod to vintage aesthetics and modern comforts.

Perfect for a small family, couple, or traveling with friends. This is your opportunity to have the best of both worlds: experience the real Brooklyn, with easy access to the hippest parts of Manhattan.

The apartment is on the top floor of our limestone row house, rich with history and old-world details. It is located in Stuyvesant Heights, a beautiful and historic Brooklyn neighborhood. We are a few blocks away from the Gates Ave. stop on the J/Z subway line. It is about a 20-30 minute subway ride to anywhere in downtown Manhattan via an elevated, photogenic train track that will take you across the Williamsburg Bridge.

You will have the entire second floor to your self. Sunny, spacious, and fully furnished, it has a well-equipped kitchen with modern appliances, coffee maker, silverware, plates, pots and pans, etc.

Some other amenities include: plush towels, basic toiletries, coffeemakers (American, French-press, and Italian espresso), clothes hangers, hairdryer, iron, ironing board, and electric fan.

You will have a private bathroom and 4 rooms: living room, dining room, bedroom 1, and bedroom 2. Each room has doors and can either be closed off into its own private space, or joined with other rooms to form a single, spacious loft-like living space.

THE LIVING ROOM faces the street side of the house. It has a full-sized modernist Italian white leather futon that easily converts into a comfortable bed, which appears to be slightly narrower than a full size bed, but should accommodate 2 people with no problem. This room features a gorgeous antique mantel complete with mirror and multicolored tiles. The two windows give plenty of natural light during the day.

THE DINING ROOM is as seen in photos, and situated between the living room and bedroom 1. It has pocket doors with beautiful art nouveau etched glass windows.

BEDROOM 1 faces the garden side of the house. It features a comfortable full-sized bed, full-length mirror, a chest of drawers, ample closet space, and a desk. The two windows give the room plenty of natural light during the day.

BEDROOM 2 faces the street side of the house on a quiet block. It features a comfortable full-sized bed, but doesn't have much room for anything else. Guests staying in this room can use the closet in the dining room for storing their luggage and clothes.

You have the option of putting up a comfortable high-end full-size air mattress (available upon request) in the living room or dining room.

Guests will have access to a full floor-through apartment on the second floor, one flight of stairs up from the top of the stoop, or two flights total. Unfortunately, the apartment is not handicap accessible.

We have free street parking on our block. Unlike a lot of places in NYC, it's generally not hard to find a parking spot in front of or near our house.

We moved into this property after living in Manhattan for many years and now wonder what took us so long? Brooklyn is where it's at. Kevin discovered this while traveling in France, when he heard 'Très Brooklyn!' used to invoke something hip and exciting.

Stuyvesant Heights is a beautiful and diverse place, with one of the largest blocks of historic brownstones in Brooklyn, and friendly interaction between people of different ages, races, and income groups. Some call our part of Stuyvesant Heights "East Bed Stuy", and have styled it as the next Williamsburg. Our neighborhood is currently undergoing a noticeable and exciting renaissance of growth. It seems like every month that we hear about a new development, restaurant, or cocktail bar about to open in the vicinity.

We find the area near our home to be quite safe, whether during the day or night. Ralph Ave., the nearest cross street and the street that you'd take when walking to/from the nearest subway station, is well-lit at night. There is a police precinct on Ralph Ave., about a 5 minute walk from our house. Riding the subway to/from the house is safe. At night, there is plenty of people who get off at the nearest subway stop (Gates Ave. on the J/Z line), pedestrians walking on Ralph Ave., and car traffic.

Everywhere you go, there is a feeling of community and interconnectedness that is much more rare in Manhattan. Take your time to experience the soul and diversity of this neighborhood by simply taking a walk around. You might see Orthodox Jewish men on their way to Shabbat on a Saturday morning, or hear Gospel music drifting down the block on Sundays. In the summer time, Bed Stuy is known for its block parties, and it's not uncommon to see people chatting with their neighbors or grilling BBQ in their front yards.

Near our home, you'll find good and affordable restaurants, adorable neighborhood cafes, enthusiastic and friendly local residents, local businesses, and lots of creative people. We are close to and border the following Brooklyn neighborhoods: Williamsburg, Bushwick, Clinton Hill / Fort Greene, and Crown Heights. Each of these neighborhoods is distinct with its own personality and unique offerings, and we would be happy to tell you more about them if you are curious.

Walgreens pharmacy, Bank of America ATMs, and a Blink fitness gym, are conveniently located a few blocks away. The closest grocery stores are Key Food (2 blocks away) and Bed-Stuy Fresh and Local (small independent grocery store 5 blocks away).

The J/Z train (Gates Ave. stop) is conveniently located a few blocks away. You can walk there in about 5-7 minutes. The Lower East Side (LES) is about 25 minutes away, a straight easy shot on the subway over the Williamsburg Bridge. The hippest parts of Manhattan (e.g. West Village, SoHo, LES, East Village) are all about 30 minutes away. Williamsburg, a hip neighborhood in Brooklyn full of restaurants and boutiques, is about 15-20 minutes away, easily accessible on the same subway line.

If you are coming from the Airport (JFK or LGA) you will get here faster and cheaper by Taxi than to anywhere in Manhattan.

For those landing in JFK, the commute is roughly 25-30 minutes by taxi, which will cost around $25 for the trip. JFK is 1 hour door to door via public transportation. You can take the airport AirTrain to Sutphin/Jamaica stop, transfer to the J train headed to Broad St., and get off at the Gates Ave. stop.

If you are coming to NYC via Amtrak, the commute is about 45 minutes via public transportation door to door from Penn Station to our place. After you arrive at Penn Station, walk 2 blocks east to 34th St. and 6th Ave. Take the F or M downtown to the Delancey / Essex stop. Get off and transfer to the J, headed to Brooklyn across the Williamsburg Bridge. Get off at the Gates Ave. stop.

From the Gates Ave. subway stop, it's about a 5 minute walk to our place. Walk down Ralph Ave.. You will pass a police precinct on your right. Walk a few more blocks and turn right on Putnam Ave. Our house will be on the right side of the street.

1. Treat the apartment, furniture, and appliances with care as if it’s your own home. Keep the apartment clean and sanitary. Do your own dishes and clean up after yourself. Do not leave excessive trash, empty shopping bags, etc. in the fridge, cabinets, or anywhere within the apartment when you leave.

2. If you choose to rearrange our decorations and furniture, please put them back to their original places before you leave.

3. We live downstairs. Please be considerate, walk softly, and keep the volume down in the early mornings and evenings.

4. Please do not invite guests into the apartment, or access any part of our house outside your apartment, without our approval.

5. Let us know if you notice anything broken, or in need of repair or replenishing.

6. No smoking in the house. No candles or fires. No illegal drugs or parties.

7. Please water the plants in the 3 window boxes during your stay (assuming it is warm enough when you visit and we have plants at all).

9. Return keys to cup (in the foyer between two front doors) when you leave.

We are educated and courteous hosts who love our neighborhood and are eager to share it with you. One of us is an antique dealer and will be home (unless he is traveling) most of the day. The other is an attorney who works with a law firm in midtown, and speaks Mandarin. 我会说中文! We enjoy travel, literature, the theater, improv, Argentine tango, great restaurants, fine cocktails and liquor, and of course, Brooklyn! Don't hesitate to ask for advice.

We always look forward to meeting kindred spirits from shores near and far, and sharing with them our wonderful neighborhood and home. We live on the bottom floors, but at least one of us is generally available to answer your questions, provide directions, give recommendations, or just have a glass of wine together.

We have a small dog. But she will stay with us at all times on our floors and not bother you.

We are eager to share our home with you. In return, we would appreciate it very much if you share with us some basic information about yourself when contacting us for the first time. For example, a brief introduction of yourself and any guests who will be staying with you, the purpose of your trip, the exact dates you want to reserve, etc. This would not only give us a better sense of who we are welcoming to our home, but also help us better anticipate your needs when preparing for your arrival.

About Yuan and Kevin

We are educated and courteous hosts who love our neighborhood and are eager to share it with you. Yuan is an attorney who works with a law firm in midtown, and speaks Mandarin. 我会说中文! Kevin is an antique dealer, long-time New Yorker, and will be home (unless he is traveling) most of the day. We enjoy travel, literature, the theater, improv, Argentine tango, great restaurants, fine cocktails and liquor, and of course, Brooklyn! Don't hesitate to ask for advice.

We had both lived in Manhattan before moving to Bed Stuy, Brooklyn. We love our house and Brooklyn. Looking forward to sharing both with you!

Yuan and Kevin purchased this apartment in 2014

What makes this apartment unique

We love the historic details in our house: the woodwork, beautifully tiled mantels, hardwood floor, the tin molding pattern on the walls, plaster wall details, stained glass skylight, mirrors. We also love how quiet, spacious, and full of natural light our house is.

It is a breath of fresh air from Manhattan in many ways. The general vibe of our neighborhood is much more friendly and community-like than Manhattan. Here, neighbors talk to each other and help each other out with things like taking in your mail deliveries when you are not home. Everywhere you go, on the streets or in a cafe, you will find that people tend to be more open and friendly than in Manhattan.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a very good stay at Kevin's apartment. Kevin was very available to answer any questions we had.

The space is lovely and even larger than the pictures show. The kitchen is well stocked and we were quite comfortable having another couple in to join us at the apartment for a glass of wine one evening. The best bath towels I've ever used!

Perfect, Beautiful, Historical Heaven!

  • 5 of 5

I cannot possibly give descriptive justice to this perfect space, which you might be considering booking. The ride from the airport is quick. The neighborhood is safe, clean and easily navigable. The owners instructions on entering the residence are clear, simple to follow and reassuring of the saftey of the home. The home itself is beautifully kept; the original architecture is stunning, the decorations are awe inspiring. The rental space is large, open, of the utmost cleanliness, peaceful, calm and inviting. Coffee, tea, filtered water, soap, shampoo and other essential items, which are usually absent from a rental and cause the convieneance of home to be missed, are all available. Tips on how to experience the best of the area are presented beautifully in a binder on the table. The short walk to the metro felt easy and safe, all hours of the day and night. The hosts were happy to accommodate our forgetfulness in printing all of our show tickets before our trip, and left our remaining tickets for us in the foyer. We stayed comfortably in the space with another couple during our trip and never felt cramped or crowded. I hope to stay again, the next time we visit the city.

Comfortable beds, nicely redone kitchen, plenty of seating in dining room and living room.

Great location and hosts. Yuan knew we were planning a picnic in Central Park & loaned us a picnic blanket. This, coupled with a bottle of chilled prosecco, started our stay out beautifully. A recommendation to Chex Alex around the corner was sublime! This VRBO was a sweet find.

Comfortable and Homey.

  • 4 of 5

Comfortable place with a nicely equipped kitchen. Enjoyed the book collection left in the apartment and the list of nearby eateries came in handy. Used the Metro trains into Manhatten, 5-10 min walking distance daily. No problem finding a parking spot for our car, happier still to leave car behind each day. Altogether worked well for my family and our visit to NYC. I still recommend the place although I was not so happy about the extra charge for my younger son to sleep on the couch. Although it was an expected charge (extra guest fee stated clearly in ad) I felt it was a bit of an over-charge.

Owner's Response: Rene, I'm very sorry you were not happy with the $25 USD extra guest charge, a charge that (1) is clearly stated in our listing as you acknowledge, (2) we specifically discussed over the phone in person before you made your booking, and (3) I followed up about again after you checked out, to avoid any surprises. For the benefit of future guests reading this review, I want to establish a clear record of what happened. At the time of your booking, you were not sure if you would have an extra guest. I was happy to accommodate you, and agreed that it would be best for you to make your booking for 2 guests instead of 3, and pay the extra guest fee later if necessary. Your extra guest ended up coming, but you never followed up on the issue and we had no further communications during your stay. After you checked out, I followed up with you again about the extra guest fee before collecting it, to make sure that you are aware and not surprised. Under these circumstances, I don't see what we could have done differently to ensure your full satisfaction. If you felt that the extra guest fee was too high, I would have been happy to discuss it and work with you. But you should have raised the issue with me before, not after, agreeing to it. Bringing it to my attention for the first time in the form of a public review is not ideal for either side. As for your son's choice to sleep on the sofa, I do want to point out that we offer a comfortable full-size air mattress, in addition to the two beds in two separate bedrooms. This information is also stated in our listing. Yuan

A nice stay in Brooklyn

  • 5 of 5

I can fully recommend staying in this nice apartment in Brooklyn.

The apartment is spacious, nice and clean with a good kitchen.

The hosts Yuan and Kevin are very helpful and welcoming people. We arrived at night due to problems with our flight but got a warm welcome, furthermore did Yuan help us with some lost luggage and arranged transport ect.

We would love to stay again another time.
