10 rustic cabins located at 10,200' in the Grand Mesa National Forest
Very cool alpine cabins surrounded by lakes for rent. Whether you want to fish, hike, mountain bike, snowmobile, hunt, or just paddle around on an alpine lake we have got you covered. We are located in the Grand Mesa National Forest near the towns of Grand Junction, Cedaredge, Grand Mesa, and Palisade. Cabins are at 10,200 ft and get pounded by heavy snow in the winter. We are also 14 miles from Powderhorn Ski Area. Great Nordic Skiing right from the parking lot.
Each cabin has a unique bed set up, but most cabins will sleep about 6 people total in 4 beds (that might include a futon). We have Cabin #2 set up to book directly through HomeAway VRBO. Cabin #2 has an open floor plan with two distinct sleeping areas. The first sleeping area has a twin over twin bunk bed. The second sleeping area has a twin over queen bunk bed. There is a futon in the main area. Cabin #2 also has an antique piano which was recently tuned.
Each of our cabins has a full kitchen and bathroom.
Kitchens: refrigerator, freezer, stove, oven, microwave, toaster, coffee pot, coffee filters, coffee, sugar, spices, dishes, glasses, coffee mugs, pots, pans, baking dishes, cooking utensils, eating utensils, paper towels, dish towels, dish soap, tin foil, matches, and more.

About Jeff & Jessica Kieper
We are Jeff & Jessica Kieper. Jeff is originally from Milwaukee and moved to Colorado in 1998 to pursue his love of the outdoors. He was in the Vail area snowboarding, mountain biking, rafting, and snowmobiling for 16 years before the opportunity came up to purchase Thunder Mountain Lodge. Also during his time in Vail, he worked for BRP for the CanAm Spyder and Ski-doo snowmobiles. Jessica moved to Vail in 2008 to pursue her love of mountains and snowboarding. Jeff & Jessica met while working as raft and snowmobile guides at a company in Vail. Jeff purchased the cabins in 2014, and after fixing them up, we were open May 2015. We got married at Thunder Mountain Lodge in September of 2015. That first year was a whirr and a blur! Now things are much easier, as we are closer to our goals of offering comfortable accommodations for people wanting to explore the Grand Mesa. We also get to share our mutual love of snowmobiling with people on guided snowmobile tours. We have 10 snowmobiles and we enjoy showing people around the Grand Mesa.
Jeff & Jessica Kieper purchased this Cabin in 2014
Why Jeff & Jessica Kieper chose Cedaredge
Thunder Mountain Lodge is located on two of the 300 lakes on the Grand Mesa. Since the cabins are located at 10,200' in elevation, it stays nice and cool in the summer and we get hammered with snow in the winter. Summer days are in the 80s but never higher, the evenings are cool, and perfect for standing around a camp fire roasting marshmallows. Winter in Colorado is packed with blue bird days after big snow storms. You can enjoy cross country skiing and snowmobiling right from the lodge, or you can go to Powderhorn ski area for some downhill skiing or snowboarding. Powderhorn is just 14 miles from our cabins.
What makes this Cabin unique
Our lodge is in the middle of the motorized and non motorized zones, so people can access both sets of trails right from their cabin. There is an average of 420" of snow each winter, and that is a ton of snow! The snow is often piled up around the cabins up to the roof! We love giving snowmobile tours and we also have unguided snowmobile rentals. In the summer, we are located on two lakes, but close access to all of the other 300 lakes on the Grand Mesa! It is so much fun to explore all the different lakes. The Crag Crest is an exciting hike, just down the street from our cabins. We rent canoes, stand up paddle boards, and inflatable kayaks to enjoy on the lakes. The view of the sunset over the lake is priceless! Year round, you can enjoy the tall spruce trees and aspen trees around the area. And no matter what activity you are enjoying, the views of the surrounding mountains from the trails are amazing! Come enjoy the beauty of the Grand Mesa and all of the activities that the mountain has to offer.

We had four wonderful nights in Cabin 1, the " Room With a View" of Ward Lake. 5 stars for overall accommodations, location, views, and access to trails. 3 stars for shower water pressure and wireless Internet. We will be back! A great value for an opportunity to enjoy one of Colorado's best kept secrets, Grand Mesa. Oops!
Grand Mesa stay
Well appointed cottage, very comfortable for 2 couples. Perfect position for walks around the lakes. Highly recommend for a stay in a green, cooler area in summer.
Very clean, compact, and offered everything we needed for a weekend if hiking/fishing. Especially appreciated all the hooks along the wall to keep clothes and equipment out of the way. Small, cute, clean, owners very nice.
Thunder Mountain Lodge/Cabins
I really don't want this place to sound too good!I want to keep it a secret,so that it will remain uncrowded, relaxed and oh so peaceful. Don't expect to come here for the luxury of king sized rooms etc. The cabins are small, yet exceptionally clean, with all one needs, when the goal is relaxation, peace, quiet and enjoying the feeling of almost being alone in an incredible setting
Jeff & Jessica, the owners, were most accommodating in an exceptionally relaxed manner, yet totally unobtrusive. They left our cabin open and ready for us when we arrived, didn't even check-in until the next morning, rented us a rowboat, loaned us a life jacket and were most helpful.
We were a party of 6:3 children, 3 adults. We enjoyed a bonfire and roasting marshmallow in the fire pit, relaxed in the hammocks, caught fish from shore and the boat, explored the many lakes and roads that wind around the wilderness ,smelled the freshness in the air and photographed the acres of wildflowers. Recommend
TML, oh yes, but don't come ruin the atmosphere and crowd it up for us the next time we are there. We will be back!
Thanks so much for your kind review! Jeff and I are new at this, it's our first summer open. We are trying to have some fun while getting this business going. Your group was great to have with us, and we look forward to your next stay with us!
Thunder Mountain Lodge has 10 cabins situated at 10,200' on National Forest Land, completely surrounded by the Grand Mesa National Forest. The Grand Mesa is the largest flat top mountain in the world, however it is not flat. There are many peaks and valleys to explore. The Grand Mesa is also home to more than 300 lakes! The lakes are stocked with fish and only some of the lakes are fly/lures only; you can use bait in most lakes. This area is known for being uncrowded. There is just so much area to explore!
During the summer, guests enjoy hiking, fishing, mountain biking, camp fires, ATVing, and just exploring the Grand Mesa. One of the most popular and spectacular hikes is the Crag Crest. After hiking up, you reach a skinny ridge where you have steep drop off on both sides of the trail. Be careful not to trip!
In autumn, people enjoy all of the summer activities plus elk, deer, & bear hunting, mushroom gathering, and viewing the colorful aspen tree leaves. The Grand Mesa is also home to the Boreal Owl, a few hundred moose, and other wild birds and animals. Thunder Mountain Lodge rents canoes, stand up paddle boards, and inflatable kayaks to enjoy on the lakes.
Winter time brings a ton of snow to the Grand Mesa. We average 420" of snow each winter. The cabins here are positioned on the edge of the non motorized zone and the motorized zone. So people can access the cross country ski trails and the snowmobile trails from our cabins. Thunder Mountain Lodge offers guided snowmobile tours and unguided rentals. We also have snowshoes available to our guests. Many of our guests bring their own snowmobiles, and we have plenty of plowed parking for large trailers.
If you have any questions, please reach out to us, we would be happy to help! Jeff & Jessica Kieper
