|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
In the gently rolling Bourbon county hills between Paris and Cynthiana, travelling down a gated crunchy gravel drive a red barn comes into view – a surprising hideaway.
Unexpected, modern serenity awaits you on the other side of the traditional barn doors. A bright, airy, open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area with a high ceiling all feels uncluttered, peaceful, and inviting. Relax. Sink into a chair with a book, or kick back on the sofa. Underfloor heating keeps things cozy on cold nights, while central air-conditioning and ceiling fans ensure comfort in the summer.
Multiple sun-drenched windows offer far reaching pastoral views and amazing sunrises and sunsets. Outside patio and sitting areas bring you even closer to the natural beauty of the land and are a perfect spot for a quiet morning coffee or tea, or to socialize with others over pre-dinner drinks.
The European-modern kitchen with island seating is a well-equipped place to gather, whether simply making plans for the day over breakfast, lining up wine glasses and snacks for an afternoon nibble, or preparing a savory dinner (feast) for friends and family.
At the end of the day, two spacious boutique bedrooms await you. Fall into bed, adjust the firmness to your liking, and drift off to good night’s sleep. Also, two modern, aesthetic bathrooms offer luxuriating rain style showers, lovely soaps and plentiful towels.
Whether you are avid cyclists, a romantic couple, a family, or group of friends looking to spend time together, this is a special get-away-from-it-all place. It is just the spot for lovers of the outdoors and those who enjoy something a little different than the norm.
Days out might include a visit to one of the famous horse farms, the KY horse park, a wager at the race track, stops on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, local shopping, or simply exploring the history and rural beauty of the bluegrass. Just lovely.
Gwen, native Kentuckian, organic vegetable farmer, bourbon tour guide, loves to cook, comes alive when meeting new people, and volunteers for several organizations in Paris, Ky. Mark, originally from Williamsburg, Virginia, loves Kentucky for it's pastoral views, excellent cycling roads, and Bourbon whiskey. Both enjoy travelling wherever it may take them, domestic or international with a penchant for Italy and the UK.
Gwen Dever purchased this farmhouse in 2014
We fell in love with Bourbon County, Kentucky long before we lived in its look-alike cousin, Wiltshire, England, for five lovely years. Our plan several years ago was to buy this Kentucky pasture (37 acres of gorgeous views and fertile soil), build a homestead and live out our years tending to the earth, our animals and ourselves.
The lovely town of Paris is 6 miles away and while we could use that as our base for most of our needs, with Lexington only 30 minutes away we knew we were set. We almost did exactly that, but with just a few changes. Whilst living in England, we bought a historic home in beautiful downtown Paris, Kentucky, rented it to others while we were away, and then moved into that house upon our return from England. Now, since it is not yet the time to retire, you will find Gwen tending to the earth at the farm while Mark is at the office (bringing home the bacon).
We now have a barn at the farm! Well, this barn is just a bit different as it includes an apartment and a commercial kitchen to suit our changing needs. The barn allows us to get on with it, and to rent the apartment to others who enjoy gorgeous country views, relaxing atmosphere, small town living, sweet country cycling roads, and all things Bourbon and Horse! We know our friends and family love to visit the area, and we know you will, too. We love to hear the stories of your stay and adventures at week’s end. Come see us!
At The Barn you enjoy the serenity and beauty of the countryside all the while enjoying the European modern decor inside. The outdoor seating areas bring you directly in touch with Mother Nature. A perfect retreat if you usually live in a congested area- relax and take in the wonder of Bourbon County and its surrounds. Horse, bourbon, wine, beer, cycling, shopping, history, all these appealing pursuits are catered to here!
Thank you! We enjoyed our stay...a lot. We walked in the fields every day and saw meadowlarks, thrushes, mockingbirds, bluebirds, and the ubiquitous red-winged blackbirds. We loved hearing all of their songs. I even enjoyed that powerful rain and wind on Wednesday night, it reminded me of the Southern Indiana thunderstorms of my youth. We made it to Buffalo Trace Distillery. Great suggestion. Loved eating at Biancki's in Cynthiana, Thyme in Paris and Fava in Georgetown; ate more pie than I've eaten collectively in the past 20 years. The baking in Wisconsin is in its infancy compared to these Kentucky folks. We definitely stimulated the Bourbon economy; could not get enough of driving on the narrow shoulders roads gawking at all of the horse farms. Totally unbelievable! We bought carrot cake jam (!), white grits, and 'polenta' from the Bourbon County Farmers' Market to take back home (along with the Bourbon). Thank you, thank you! We had a splendid 4 nights in your sumptuous, fabulous red barn on the hill.
Our family came from several directions to convene in KY for a Thanksgiving retreat. Our goals included downtime, family, food, and comfort. Our expectations were exceeded, plus the added bonus of some of the most beautiful countryside imaginable. Our host was kind and a pleasure to work with. We are happy to know about "The Barn" and will return soon.
We could not have been happier with our recent stay at "the barn." The property, location, and amenities were exactly as described in the listing. The kitchen has every modern appliance upgrade an occasional or serious cook would desire. In fact, all the living spaces were very modern and stylish. The location of the property to local horse events, and the bourbon trail, make this a really easy place to home base from. And the acreage that surrounds the house ensures you are not on top of your neighbors. We would stay with Gwen again with no hesitation. She did a great job staying in touch, and constantly asked if there was anything we needed. Really great to work with someone this caring.
We had a wonderful time at the barn. We visited for five days over a weekend in October. We found it a great alternative to a hotel or motel during the racing season at Keenland. The bedding and bathroom facilities are just as you see in the pictures. In the morning you can have coffee on the front patio and then cook your breakfast in a fantastic kitchen. Bring your favorite foods and the owner, Gwen, has all the pots, pans, utensils you need to prepare your meal. After a day at the races or perhaps enjoying one of the tours of the area, you can return to the barn for a meal or sample one of the nearby restaurants. We found several we liked in Lexington. You can also enjoy a quite evening outside beside the fire pit. It is a quiet setting in a great location, and yes there are black angus in the adjoining field that greet you in the morning. We will definitely return to the barn if we return to this area.
We spent three nights in "the red barn" and absolutely loved our stay. The barn is equipped with everything that you need and it is decorated in a classy, modern and very comfortable way. We had never visited this part of the world before and we were blown away by how beautiful the countryside is. We visited the famous Claiborne Farm, went to the horse races at Keeneland and we also toured a few of the bourbon distilleries. Gwen (the owner) made sure that we had everything that we needed and she was also very helpful in suggesting things for us to see and do. If you want to have true rural Northern Kentucky experience you cant go wrong staying here.
Excellent quality family time! Fresh air, country walks, Dinner on the grill, star gazing & s'mores by the fire pit! Super comfortable beds and a fabulous contemporary kitchen! This was our second visit at the barn! A true treat!
The attention to detail at this beautiful country retreat was amazing. Down to a bootjack, towels, and umbrella at the door. Kitchen was a dream to cook in, bathrooms were stocked with tolietries in case you happen to forget soap (like we did) . Plenty of towels, blankets, extra pillows, comfy beds....one of the best places we have stayed at. I could go on and on and still not likely cover every great thing about this place.
