I am thrilled to be back in Costa Rica! I lived in Costa Rica in the late 80's and 90's when I owned a property in Santa Teresa on the Nicoya Peninsula. I then relocated to S.W. Colorado for many wonderful years where I enjoyed the mountain's, wildlife and community. When I came back to Costa Rica 5 years ago, I was looking for the primal nature in the country that I love so much, and a location that was still relatively undeveloped and had maintained it's local culture. I fell in love with Manzanillo right away, and feel very fortunate to be here and to be able to share my home with others. As I do not arrange travel or tours, please go to www.monkeymood.com for assistance with transport to the area and much more!
Monica purchased this Villa in 2013
Why Monica chose Manzanillo
This property and the beautiful jungle setting it is positioned in spoke to me immediately. The house has the feeling of a tree house due to the beautiful hardwood construction and open format situated up on the hill. The stairway up to the house has 55 steps!
What makes this Villa unique
This is a very private property, with only one other small rental cabin down below and the caretaker's cabin at the very front of the property. Eli, the caretaker lives here on the property and is very amiable, knowledgable and resourceful. Both of the houses available for rent are lived in by the owner as well, and are private homes.

Great property with other external issues.
I am loathe to give a less than stellar review for the Treehouse itself. It is a wonderful place. Very ecclectic. The amenities of the house were nice and the views were breathtaking. That being said, be aware, YOU WILL NOT SLEEP!!
Why, you ask? Well to begin with, the beds are one step above plywood. But that's only a small part of the real issue. The real issue is wildlife. And not the indigenous creatures. The Howler Monkeys, birds, insects and other wildlife are indeed loud at night but they form a sort of rhythm you get used to. Almost how a noise machine can lull you to sleep. What you will not get used to is the dog down the hill that barks incessantly throughout the night. This dog barked at a high pitched wail, on and off, all night long, for our entire 4 night stay. We contacted our contact for the building and were met with a weak, " we'll contact ownership" response. We never heard from them again. It was bad enough that I followed the dog's noise and located his residence. However, being an American, who doesn't speak Spanish well, in a foreign country, I thought the better of it and didn't approach the owners.
So all being said, the Treehouse was quaint and cool, Costa Rica.
Perhaps better beds might allow better sleep, which would perhaps negate the dog. If you're on the fence, maybe management could put you over by providing better mattresses.
This was a unique and wonderful experience. Relaxing in the open jungle was just what we needed
This is our second stay at Casa Las Ranitas. This really says something because we usually want to try somewhere or something new. Victoria's place and Manzanillo itself are such a great fit for us that we had to come back at least one more time. If you are looking for a quiet spot in the Costa Rican jungle to call home for awhile, this is the place. Victoria, the owner, and Eli her support staff are very friendly, helpful and there when you need them but you would think you are alone in your jungle retreat. The house is very comfortable and the kitchen pretty well equipped for basic meals. But like many houses in the area it is open to the outside. You will have insects and small lizards in your house. Some of them are fascinating ! This part of Costa Rica is a nature lovers dream. You can watch birds (tucans, parrots, hawks and song birds) and monkeys from your porch. This year we also often saw the poison dart frogs the home is named for. Many beautiful beaches are only a short walk or bike ride away. We came without a car this trip and found grocery shopping was easy, either locally or by taking the bus into Puerto Viejo. There are several local restaurants and Sodas if you want to eat out but this is not a party town or a place to expect margueritas served up on the beach. There is lots for a nature lover to do around here and great guides can be found in the village.
I cannot express how wonderful the time was that we spent in Costa Rica. The villa was great, the scenery was awesome, the monkeys howling in the mornings was a perfect wake up to ride the bike to the beach and watch the sunrise. Greating the sun with no one around was beyond perfect. Eating at the recommended "sodas" added about 5 pounds. The time in the hammocks while it rained was the most stress free I have felt in years. The villa on the hill was perfection.
From heavy tropical rainstorms to howler monkey alarm clocks, this is the place to experience it all
We enjoyed throwing open the doors and windows to see the 360 degree views of jungle. We woke every morning to howler monkeys and went to sleep listening to rain on the tin roof. Our hostess met us when we arrived and gave us a tour of the property that was much appreciated. The house was clean and comfortable, you just have to be patient with the water supply which can be slow at times. Pura vida!
My husband and I stayed in Manzanillo and loved it. Our flight was delayed on the day we were to arrive, and Victoria was so helpful in getting me in touch with the travel agents they work with. I was able to easily book a hotel in San Jose as well as book an interbus shuttle for the ride out to Manzanillo. When we arrived the next day, Victoria picked us up at the drop off location which was very close to her house. On that same day, we saw a family of 8 Howler Monkeys right on her property! The very next day, we saw a sloth and her baby right off of the back porch. So very cool!! The house is set in a secluded area, so the abundance of wildlife was awesome. We sat out back and actually saw Toucans which was awesome! We woke up to the Howler Monkeys every morning which was so neat. We couldn't believe the sounds they make. This place is definitely for the more adventurous! Victoria was a wonderful host and helped us with anything we needed. If you need to get around, the TUK TUK was very convenient. We used it every day. Antonio was our driver and he was the best! We also were able to use Victoria's bikes to get around as well which was great. We highly recommend the paddle boarding tour at the Punta Uva Dive Center as well as horseback riding with Caribe Horses. Both of these places were great and a wonderful experience! The Ara Project is a must see as well. All in all, one of the best experiences we've ever had! Will definitely be back!
This beautiful private Property is located 0.5 kilometers before the village of Manzanillo, minutes from beautiful beaches and the gateway to the Gandoca- Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge.
Ideal for nature lovers and intrepid travelers, one need not venture further than Manzanillo for authentic Carribean restaurants and hospitality, and our local guides can take you on tours through the jungle, fishing, dolphin, kayak and snorkeling and much more. For those seeking Nightlife, Puerto Viejo is only 12 kilometers to the North, and there are wonderful venues for music all along the beach towns that stretch South down to Manzanillo.
Casa Las Ranitas is your home away from home!
