NOMAD'S RETREAT, unique secluded paradise overlooking the Mediterranean

A truly stunning, traditional & unique Cortijo (old country mansion) on the beautiful & unspoiled Costa Tropical of southern Spain.

The house is a traditional cortijo (old country house) which I have sympathetically re-modeled in a traditional Spanish style ... stone walls, tiled floors, a wonderful thatched roof in the dining/sun room with many fine features not usually found in modern-built properties, such as the large open fire in the lounge. There are full-height opening doors and windows with shutters throughout the house giving plenty of ventilation, and each bedroom has a ceiling fan ... the property also stands in lush tropical gardens with large, mature trees giving a shady canopy over the house ... all these features make the property cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

The pool, hot tub and leisure area are accessed by some steps, but there is ramped access to this area for those with less mobility. But as this all can be heated it is an all year pleasure zone'

We have internet too ... so even if you have a little work to do on holiday you can .. relaxing by the pool!!

Pool can be heated to 28 °C!

The Costa Tropical is the most beautiful region on the Spanish Costas. Historical stone look-out towers sit along the coast line, where messages were once sent to Granada to guard this "special place”. It's very lush and green, most trees that grow here are tropical - palms, mangoes, avocados, pomegranates, bananas etc ... hence the name Costa Tropical ! Luckily for us this is an area has not been ruined by over development. It's an unspoiled dreamy, laid-back place ... the people are truly warm, helpful and friendly. Even to this day it is not unusual to see farmers walking down the streets or plowing the fields with oxen, donkeys or anything else that they can get their hands on!!!! One of the really special things about the area is that it is clean and safe, particularly for the children. The locals adore children and they are welcomed wherever they go, even in local restaurants late in the evening. The nearest beach to Nomads Retreat, just below Alfa Mar, is a lovely 10min walk or a couple of minutes by car. There, the cove is quiet and peaceful, the beach is somewhat stony, but the rock pools are a great source of enjoyment and adventure for the children, catching crabs & fishing. The sea there is a great place for snorkeling and water sports. Nowhere better to spend a lazy lunchtime, than in the cove's little "Tapas" bar whilst watching the dolphins!

Salobrena & Almunecar (Only 10mins drive to either one)

Both historic towns are very pretty, white-washed houses; old town shopping areas & restaurants; Moorish castles, lovely narrow streets to saunter through in the balmy evenings. There are local National parks with deer, wild boar & breath taking views. Shops & supermarkets etc for your every need with some excellent places to eat & drink! The beaches there are sandy and have Tropical "Chiriniguitos" where BBQ or a cocktail can be served to you with sand under your feet!

Almunecar has a beautiful water park overlooking the Mediterranean with slides, pools, etc. Large tropical gardens, restaurants, entertainment, face painting & fun things for the children. Whilst they play safely you can relax with a drink under a palm tree! Full day only €13 (£8.50) half day €7 (under £5) There is also a tropical bird sanctuary under palm trees just below the castle.

The Waterfalls

This is another one of my favorite places to visit, not many people seem to know about this paradise! Clean, clear, water melting from the Sierra Nevada where two rivers meet. It is a lovely hour's drive through a cherimoya plantation, through the mountains & two small villages. Once there, you will not want to leave, children and adults can dive into deep limestone rock pools. I like to sit in the shallow cascading fall & pools, it's better than a Jacuzzi !. Plus spectacular scenery and wildlife (there are always deer to be seen). Take a picnic and cross the swing bridge over one of the waterfalls above a wonderful green valley, which was once a river bed, now filled with exotic trees & flowers and incredible rock formations and trickling streams. Amazing!

The Alpujarras (About 1hrs drive from Nomads Retreat)

Winding mountain roads taking you through forests passing natural springs and caves to just below the Sierra Nevada (Ski Area) where there are pretty white washed villages selling local handy-craft, woven rugs, cured hams, locally collected honey, organic cheese & the famous rich olive oils, not forgetting the wonderful and inexpensive wines. One can spend a full day exploring this region eating tapas & local specialties, tasting the local wine and just taking in the views!

Nerja Caves are spectacular, and have the largest stalagmite (or is that a nite!) in Europe - well worth a visit.

During the winter months there is much to do & see in the area ... you can enjoy a morning skiing in the Sierra Nevada...just an hour or so away...& get back in time to watch the sun go down enjoy a cocktail on the terrace by the ocean. Visit the fascinating city of Granada...learn some of Spain's rich history & culture … browse the museums & the amazing Alhambra palace. Or pop down to the millionaire's playground that is Puerto Banus.... & see how the other half live!

And having done all that ... one can just laze by the private pool ... watching dolphins, playing in the distant Mediterranean from the luxury of Nomads Retreat! (which is ... MY particular favorite thing to do!)

Heavenly Perch

  • 5 of 5

Sitting by the pool, enjoying the sun and the incredible 5-mile view in both directions, I could not believe it was all real and mine to enjoy. What a glorous place in the sun for a vacation. The house itself is lovely. We enjoyed cooking in the generous and well equipped kitchen and grilling outside. Even though I am a die hard tourist, I found the allure of Nomad's Retreat irresistible and spent much of the week revelling in its unique joys.

Kate and Stephen are generous, caring hosts. They answered our questions and are a joy to have around. We parted as friends and I really hope to spend time with them in the future. Hey Kate, join me in Miami some time at my place at the Shelborne!!

And to top it all off there is the 46' yacht, The Optimist. What a fabulous boat and what a great afternoon we had on it. She was masterfully handled by Stephen, a Captain I would willingly set out to sea with. Kate provided a lovely repast and there were drinks aplenty.

At the week's end I really did not want to leave and return to reality. What a sweet, sweet retreat.

True Oasis!

  • 5 of 5

Kate is awesome. She’s such good people. Her house was immaculate and had a great vibe. We had two families with two toddlers and she made sure we had cribs and high chairs.

I’ve used a ton of Homeaway and Airbnb rentals and Kate is the reason why those services exist. What you see in the photos is exactly what you get. She has countless reviews that are all positive.

I highly recommend The Nomad Retreat!

HEAVEN

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we arrived, we thought we had died and were in "heaven", the villa Nomads Retreat, the gardens, the fabulous pool was ALL incredible, The villa is much more spacious than the photos show plus the pool too is generous in size. Kate made us feel very special always making sure everything was as good as it could possibly be. She even pulled a few strings as we especially wanted a week that had been booked by another client, due to my 60th birthday and my son's 30th birthday. - absolute STAR of a lady. We had more fun than I ever thought possible. A VERY BIG THANK YOU to Kate for making our dream come true.

Great villa and great hostess

  • 5 of 5

Arrival date 18/07/2015 2 week stay

We enjoyed everything about the villa and the view from the pool is just stunning. The girls enjoyed their early morning yoga and pilates sessions by the pool.

Kate was the perfect hostess and could not do enough to make our stay perfect, with advise on places to vist, local shops and all the other things only a local would know about.

Highlights of the trip were Granada, local tapas down on the local beach, picking fresh lemons of the trees for a G&T, water fights with the kids around the pool and the local water falls and lagoons, really is a must for the young at heart. Who's brave enough to do the 35 foot jump into the lagoon? And not to forget a BBQ and a few drinks on the veranda over looking pool and the Med.:)

I loved my stay here and Kate, I look forward to another visit some time soon.

Thanks Kate

all the best

Tony

A fabulous week

  • 5 of 5

Just wanted to say a big thank you for last week. Nomad’s is just the perfect place. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and left on Saturday refreshed and invigorated. And are still feeling buzzy despite EasyJet!

You have a wonderful place there, you’ve made it a real home and made us feel really welcome. Thank you. The girls just adored their cave room so thank you for making it special for them. For me I loved the quiet mornings, to make a coffee and chat to Jo on the little veranda outside of the kitchen. We watched the doves doing their mad circling and all landing one by one on the telegraph wires in the next field, wobbling a bit, but not falling off. We also did spy the eagle, but luckily not at the same time as the doves. The gardens and flowers around the villa are just glorious. You’ve put in an enormous amount of work into the place and it is really paying off. But you were right. A week wasn’t sufficiently long enough.

Wish you and your family well Kate. Hope to visit again.
