About the property

2 Bedrooms Sleeps 4.

This fully restored 17th century gîte with pool, surrounded by private eight acres of woodland and meadow, is situated at the gateway to the Lot & Dordogne valleys an area of outstanding natural beauty famous for its vineyards, plum orchards and beautiful hilltop villages. The 8 acre estate is home to roe deer and other animals.

The gîte has been fully restored to a high standard. Upstairs there are two bedrooms, one double and one twin, and a bathroom. There is an additional z-bed available for the twin room suitable for an additional 3rd child. Downstairs is an open plan kitchen/dining room and living area. The kitchen is fully equipped with dish washer, gas hob and electric oven, microwave, washing machine, tumble dryer, large fridge-freezer, coffee machine etc. The lounge area has a flat screen TV with Freesat channels and dvd player. Adjoining the house is a terrace with table and chairs plus a parasol where trees provide welcome shade from the midday sun. There is space for parking one car, however there is ample space outside the owner's home should parking be required for a second car. From the terrace a short walk across the meadow will take you to the swimming pool (May to September), which is 12m x 5m and surrounded by a security fence in accordance with French law. Relax on the sun loungers on the terrace by the pool.

There is a barbecue available for guests to use (charcoal not provided).

The gîte is surrounded by our own eight acres of meadows and woodland where you can walk and enjoy the wild flowers and butterflies, and even gather wild strawberries or chestnuts according to the season. Wildlife visitors include: Roe deer, badgers, wild boar, hares and rabbits, and red squirrels. Birds of prey are frequently seen and include buzzard, red and black kites, sparrow-hawk, hen-harrier, kestrel and barn owls. Other garden visitors include: hoopoe, common redstart, goldcrest, black redstart, red shrikes, nuthatch, white wagtail, golden Oriole, all the woodpeckers and various lizards. Insects include many species of butterflies. A true naturalist paradise.

Sorry, no pets and no smoking in the gîte.

Wonderful countryside, friendly/attentive owners

  • 5 of 5

This was our 5th year coming to France and staying in private houses/gites. We stayed for a week in early August and had a wonderful time. The owners had just completed the pool fence before we arrived as we had mentioned that we had 2 young children with us - very decent and kind of them to be so aware of safety around the pool. The kids spent most of the holiday in the pool and it is the best pool we have ever had. Most are the small above-ground type, this is a proper pool and was always clean too.

The grounds are extensive and interesting, you may even see local deer as we did, and there are a number of fields/meadows all for guests' use.

The gite itself is well-equipped with an open-plan kitchen, dining room and lounge downstairs and 2 lovely bedrooms upstairs with a clean, modern bathroom as well as bath and shower.

Privacy was not an issue. We were a little concerned, having always stayed in private properties in the past, that being on the same grounds as the owners might have been awkward but it was like having our own home and they left us alone throughout. Yet they were always there if you needed them, exactly how it should be. They were kind enough to leave us a bottle of wine and the gite was spotless when we arrived.

Fumel and the surrounding areas are beautiful and the weather was excellent as this property is in the south of France and benefits from that climate. We found plenty of good places to eat within short driving distance.

All in all, this was a lovely holiday and we can firmly recommend this property to others. Well done.

Owner's Response: Hi Tim & Peta, It was lovely to meet you and the boys, and we are glad that you enjoyed your stay so much. We do want our guests to enjoy their well earned holidays, and are glad that you enjoyed yours so much, here. It was a pleasure having you here, and your boys are a real credit to you. For any future prospective gite owners we can fully recommend and endorse this family. We also are keen to provide a positive experience for our guests, and welcome helpful suggestions from our guests, and after you departed we changed the curtain for a blind in the bathroom, so thank you for the suggestion. Thank you for leaving the gite in a wonderful condition. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Fabulous hosts, well-furnished gite, beautiful location - perfect family holiday!

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we arrived, our host was so incredibly welcoming and accommodating that we instantly felt at home! The gite has everything we needed and is close enough to the main house for support if necessary, but secluded enough for privacy when wanted.

The pool was the perfect temperature and sits on a terraced area with stunning views across this unspoilt valley. Despite previous negative feedback, none of us ever found the robot pool-cleaner any kind of inconvenience - on the contrary, it was extremely reassuring to know how immaculately clean the pool consistently is! In late evenings and early mornings, a deer and her baby visited the garden and entranced us all.

There are so many different places to visit that we could easily have stayed for a month - Monpazier bastide is beautiful and not full of pesky tourists (oh the irony!), Sarlat is stunning, there are not enough words to describe how truly staggering the views from Domme are across the Dordogne/Périgord valley, prehistoric information parks, wineries, the new cave re-creation at Lascaux, St-Cirq-Lapopie, Rocamadour (the hills should have a health warning though!)...Fumel really is at the centre of so many wonderful places to visit you could never be bored!

The two weeks we spent here were perhaps the best family summer holiday we've had - despite the ridiculously high temperatures during the heatwave! We cannot thank Dion and his family enough for all their thoughtfulness and welcome - and have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone who wants a relaxing, peaceful, stress-free holiday in a gorgeous location!

Thankyou so very much Dion and Jacqueline - you helped us create some truly wonderful family memories and we wish you and your family all the very best.

From the Clarke family.

Lovely location, very tranquil. Hire a cleaner at the end of your stay.

  • 1 of 5

You will need a car. It's about 2km outside of Fumel, quite rural. The pool is lovely and always spotlessly clean. Unfortunately having a cleaning robot running all day every day, even when the family is using the pool, can be annoying. We stayed two weeks in August and the weather was lovely.

The property is quoted as sleeping 6, however there are only 2 upstairs bedrooms with 2 single beds and a double. The 5th/6th persons would need to bunk up on a fold-out couch & mattress on the ground floor, which is a combined kitchen/living area.

The bathroom was not cleaned to a high standard and there was an unidentified smell emanating from the fridge when we arrived.

The furniture, fittings, white goods, utensils, beds and bedlinen are clearly all of a budget quality. The bedding was rough and uncomfortable. It's clear that the bare minimum was spent on kitting out the gite but all items you will need are there.

The owners kept a safe distance, were helpful and left us alone - in general.

We were expected to sort our rubbish and dispose of it in a recycling centre in Fumel during our stay. We did not know of this in advance and it's not what I have usually had to deal with when renting a holiday home. The categories of glass/papers/plastics/other were not clear and we learnt the hard way how to sort it after our first visit. Instructions would be useful.

Before we left we emptied bins and disposed of rubbish with minor exceptions. We cleaned and tidied the gite and left it in a reasonable condition. The owners didn't see us off when we left at 7am nor did they inspect the property before we left. When I arrived home I had an unpleasant email stating the owners would keep almost two thirds of my deposit to replace a repairable chair and for "cleaning". Apparently they expected us to leave the gite in a condition whereby they would not have to lift a finger to prepare it for the next visitors. For example they expected us to have ironed the bedlinen that we washed. It wasn't organised neatly enough on shelves and was declared "a shambles". I saw photos of the chair damage - simple wear and tear but kept a chunk of my deposit and bought a new one. Hence the recommendation to hire a cleaner for your own sake and don't touch anything! They are seemingly not aware of the OwnersDirect Changeover/Cleaning Checklist web page.

These people are in the early learning stages of renting their holiday home. Shame we were the guinea pigs.

Owner's Response: We are disappointed at your review & the one star, but are not surprised given your vexatious & insulting private emails received over the last few weeks. We do feel it necessary to address the many inaccuracies in your review. We did go out of our way to ensure you had a pleasant stay honoring your demands. Our gite is self-catering, we do not offer fully serviced accommodation. The property description states persons 5 & 6 are accommodated by a bed settee for children or teenagers. You booked on 4/6/16 for 2 adults and 2 children. On 27/6/16 you contacted us to ask could your mother come. By email at 13.15 I explained a 5th person could use the sofa bed. You replied at 15:43 “Yes, that all sounds good”. Instead of giving your elderly mother a bed, you chose to make her sleep on the sofa bed & give your children the beds, and then complained about it! We immediately bought a folding bed so no one slept on it for the remainder of your stay. The whole gite was cleaned on the morning of your arrival. The rental agreement states that if anything was wrong with the gite you should bring it to our attention immediately. Despite being asked you did not raise this. The furniture & white goods aren’t budget quality & a combination of Hotpoint & Whirpool. In most gites & camp sites you are responsible for your own rubbish and recycling waste. Printed instructions were given to you on arrival regarding the waste disposal which you hadn’t bother to read. We are still waiting for you to let us know precisely what time you are leaving, instead of texting us after you have left at 7am. Regarding your “minor exceptions” of rubbish, you left behind 3 bin bags & left the fridge full of decomposing food and worse, a filthy oven & dirty floors. The mop was bone dry after your departure. We have sent you some of the photos. We expect the gite to be left as found i.e. clean & tidy before departure & you agreed to that when you made the booking. We thoroughly clean the gite in between all guests. The armchair cover was ripped in more than one place and beyond economical repair. The bed linen is pure cotton & brand new, we have the receipts proving the cost over 1000€, hardly cheap. Guinea pigs? You were not our first guests. All the others received their security deposits in full. WE DO NOT EXPECT ANYONE TO IRON BEDDING. PHOTOS ARE AVAILABLE OF THE DAMAGE THAT Alan S. CONSIDERS SIMPLE "WEAR & TEAR", & "MINOR EXCEPTIONS OF RUBBISH" IF YOU ARE RETICENT TO BOOK WITH US.

We had a lovely week at this property. It was clean and well equipped. The owners were incredibly welcoming and helpful. The pool was lovely. A great temperature and well maintained. The gite is surrounded by lovely countryside and plenty of room for the children to play. Great wifi too. Thank you Dion & Jacqueline for a great holiday.

Owner's Response: Hi Candy & Paul, Thank you so much. We're delighted that you enjoyed your weeks holiday with us. It was a pleasure to meet you and your lovely boys. Thank you also for leaving the gite in such an amazing condition, we very much appreciate it. Any time you are in our area we would be delighted to accommodate/meet you again (we'll even have finished the car park at the main house, which we'd left to ensure your peace!).

We are ideally situated between three popular holiday areas. Lot-et-Garonne has many beautiful hilltop villages (known as Bastides): Penne d'Agenais, Pujols, Monpazier and Montflanquin to name a few. The spectacular castles of Bonaguil and Biron are also well worth a visit. The river Dordogne is about an hours drive away for canoeing and sightseeing of this popular area, including the chateaus of Castelnaud, Beynac and Chateau des Milandes. To the east of the Lot has many attractions including the beautiful town of Cahors (about 45 minutes), spectacular caves at the Gouffre de Padirac and outstandingly pretty villages of St Cirq Lapopie and Rocamadour (about one and a half hours). One hour away is the stunning medieval town of Sarlat with many restuarants, a beautiful cathedral and museums.

For children there are swimming lakes at Montaigu de Quercy and Lac Vert, ideal for a day out with a picnic, as well as the Parc en Ciel adventure course. Further afield is the Walibi Leisure Park with rides and activities for the family.

The Lot-et-Garonne department generally enjoys some of the best summer weather in France and warm temperatures can last from May or June well into October.
