About the property

Modernised 2 bdrm cottage - beautiful garden - in picturesque coastal village

A cosy recently renovated cottage with a beautiful garden. Nestled within the picturesque village of Gullane, near Edinburgh, surrounded by world acclaimed golf courses, incl Muirfield, and a few minutes walk from one of the best beaches in Scotland. It is a cosy holiday cottage, used and loved by the family, which we would like to share when we're not able to be there ourselves.

Our bright, peaceful, recently renovated cottage has one king size bedroom and one twin bedded room, a fully equipped modern kitchen / diner, relaxing sitting room and shower room. Outside there are mature private south and west facing gardens, offering a real sun-trap and a peaceful place to relax, unwind and switch off.

We live on the south side of Edinburgh, so not too far away. We don't want to intrude on your days in the cottage, but during school hours, can meet you upon arrival if you prefer. Alternatively, a key can be left for collection locally. Wireless internet and basic cable TV is included witha large flatscreen tv.

Gullane is an attractive village with amenities far outweighing it's size. It has numerous hotels, restaurants (including Michelin starred restaurants)and cafés, as well as independent shops, hairdressers, beauty salons and a fabulous fish and chip shop. Despite all of this, it is a tranquil and relaxing escape offering peace away from the crowds, yet is still only about 20 miles south of Edinburgh ( 30-40 minutes drive). It sits on the stunning East Lothian coast, surrounded by world class golf courses including Muirfield, Gullane, Archerfield and Luffness whilst North Berwick and numerous other courses lie within a short drive. The area is rich in wildlife, particularly bird life with Aberlady Bay Nature reserve within walking distance of the cottage and the National Seabird Centre at North Berwick a short drive away. The beach at Gullane is stunning and sandy, with some rocky outcrops, so there's plenty of potential for swimming, paddling and rock-pooling for all of the family. Gullane's neighbouring beach, Yellowcraigs, offers a beautiful walk along the coast from Gullane looking out across the Forth to the volcanic Island of Fidra and it's lighthouse, a favourite of Robert Louis Stevenson ( reputedly the island's shape is what he based his map for Treasure Island upon ). Today it is a haven for birds, protected as an RSPB reserve, as is its neighbour Bass Rock, further south. Further inland are fantastic walks by Lammer Law and Hopes Reservoir and through the Lammermuirs hills, offering fine views across the area.

Local attractions include: Glenkinchie Distillery - Scotland's only low land distillery; Boat trips to Bass Rock; Dirleton Castle; Tantallon Castle; Lennoxlove House; Museum of Flight, Myreton Motor Museum to name but a few.

Edinburgh is close by, accessible by train from Drem ( approx 3 miles away), North Berwick (approx 5 miles away), by bus or car. Edinburgh is an amazing historic city with its powerful castle forming the main focus along the skyline. It offers a huge variety of cultural opportunities ( eg. Film, Fringe and Edinburgh Festival, Hogmanay, the Military etc.....) as well as tourist attractions such as Britania, The Edinburgh Dungeons, The Royal Botanic Garden, or just wandering the streets of the old and new towns. Shopping here is also great with lots of independents along George Street and Harvey Nichols on St Andrews Square, or more local areas such as Stockbbridge and Bruntsfield offering a mix of coffee culture and boutique shopping. The train station in Edinburgh is very central, so an ideal arrival point for easily exploring the city, the Edinburgh Festival and all of the city's amenities.

Ideally a car is the best transport in and around Gullane, to enable access to all of the amenities and interests within the surrounding area. There are buses that run from central Edinburgh to Gullane and locally to North Berwick. Trains run on the main East Coast line from Edinburgh, stopping at North Berwick ( approx 5 miles away) and less frequently to Drem (3 miles away). Taxis are available for local pick up and local bus services are regular. Parking is available at both stations.

About Isobel

Hi, I'm a Mum of 2 wonderful children and a wife to my hard working husband. I used to be a career woman, but now I happily look after our family, our homes in Edinburgh and Gullane and soon our puppy which is due to arrive next month! We love travelling and exploring all over the world (New Zealand, Hong King, Australia, Sri Lanka, Japan, Europe, the US and more) as a family, as well as enjoying time here in the UK. I love to cook and having comfy, cosy and relaxing homes really matters to me. Our families and friends are an important part of life, although we wish there was more time to spend relaxing with them. We all love Gullane and the varied aspects it offers from golf to the beach, walking, wildlife and of course just relaxing. We have a busy life with lots of sport and a home in Edinburgh which always seems to be full of family and friends of all ages.

Isobel purchased this cottage in 2016

Why Isobel chose Gullane

The cottage is in a quiet corner of Gullane, away from the main road, but very central. It is on the beach side of the village and only a matter of minutes to walk to the sand dunes. The golf courses are very close by, as are all other amenities, services and village hospitality. The cottage has a very secluded, established garden to the rear and side of the cottage accessed directly from the kitchen, so eating al fresco is easy. The cottage is set back from the road at the front, so offers very private accommodation. It is a light and bright house and has been recently modernised to offer a fully equipped and modern kitchen diner, a spacious sitting room area and two good sized bedrooms. There is a shared shower room. We live on the south side of Edinburgh so visit the cottage ourselves regularly for weekends and school holidays, so we keep a keen eye on it and make sure that standards are maintained. We find it a very relaxing place to be and hope you will enjoy it as much as we do ourselves.

What makes this cottage unique

Privacy, large secluded garden, quiet location, central village location, recently modernised.

You couldn’t ask for a better holiday cottage. Everything you could possibly need ; 5 minutes from the beach and 20 minutes from Edinburgh on the train. Peaceful and relaxing.

Nice little cottage, spacious garden, good location

  • 4 of 5

The outside of the cottage slightly disguises what it has to offer inside. A good and comfortable cottage, including 2 bedrooms, a living room, a well equiped kitchen and a small bathroom. All nicely decorated so it is easy to feel at home. Although slightly shabby, the garden is spacious and a good asset to the property. Situated in the very heart of Gullane, it is an excellent location to discover this lovely village as well as all the good things the East Lothian coast has to offer.

Really lovely, comfy, brilliantly equipped cottage in a beautiful village

  • 5 of 5

We've just had a great stay at Middleshot Cottage. The cottage was perfect for us and our 2 children aged 4 and 6. The garden is great for them to explore and big enough to have a kick around. Was a real sun trap as well. The cottage is very cosy and really comfortable. It was a great base from which to explore Gullane and the surrounding area and brilliant being less than a 10 minute walk to the beach. It was also a lovely place to spend time in as well, the kitchen is so well equipped catering for extra dinner guests was no problem!

My only small suggestion for improvement would be to put a black out blind/curtains in the twin room, the early morning summer sun meant the kids were up with the larks!

We would definitely love to stay again, thanks very much Isobel!

The perfect cottage a short trip away from Edinburgh

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this nice little cottage a week in July, and we loved every second of it. The ideal spot if you bring children as it is a short trip away from local farms and the beach as well as being close to Edinburgh.

The cottage is modern, clean and has a beautiful garden. I would strongly recommend this place.

The owner is quick to respond to requests and provided a high chair and a cot for our 2-year old. We would definitely like to come again!

A lovely cottage in a beautiful area

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was perfect for a relaxing stay and had everything we needed. It is clean and nicely decorated with a 'beach hut' feel inside, and the owners have added lots of little touches to make it feel very homely. The kitchen is extremely well equipped (probably the best equipped holiday cottage we've stayed in!). They even provide picnic ware and beach towels, although we didn't get to use these as we stayed in February! There is a lovely enclosed garden at the back - perfect if you have young children - and it is only 10 minutes walk to the beach along quiet village streets. The beach is sandy and has great views across the Firth of Forth, whilst Gullane itself has a few shops and restaurants as well as several golf courses! There are plenty of things to do in the area and we took the train into Edinburgh from nearby Drem station, which couldn't have been easier, with the journey only taking about 30 minutes. All in all, this cottage was a great find and we'd highly recommend it.

Owner's Response: Sarah, thank you so much for your lovely comments. I'm really delighted that you enjoyed the cottage and its setting so much. It was a pleasure to meet you and your family. Thank you for looking after the cottage so well, as we use it as our escape from the city, it's so nice when others can enjoy it too, but also take care of it so thoughtfully.
