Overview

About the property

Sleeps 6: 3 beds 2 baths, 4-poster, log burner, garden with views, M6 15 mins.

We offer a warm welcome for families or friends to our recently renovated, well equipped 17C barn next to our home in the picturesque hamlet of Helton, in the quiet NE corner of the Lake District National Park. We are half way between Ullswater (5miles) and Haweswater (6miles), within easy access of all the Park's mountains, lakes and fells, with a wide variety of outdoor activities and good village pubs close by. It really is a home away from home, with all you need to create your peaceful and memorable Lakeland holiday!

We pride ourselves in our attention to every detail to make your stay memorable and we clean the property ourselves to maintain a consistently high standard of presentation. Whilst we're on hand next door if needed to help with any questions you may have, we also absolutely respect your privacy.

We have equipped and decorated the barn for you to relax in an atmosphere of calm tranquility in light airy rooms. We have combined antique and contemporary furniture and paintings in a traditional Lakeland country style. Upstairs, you'll love the stylish master bedroom with 5ft 4-poster bed and en-suite bathroom; the pretty double room with basin and wonderful views; and the third bedroom with full-sized 3ft bunk beds. Downstairs is a second bathroom with walk-in shower, toilet and basin. After a day out amongst the fells, you'll look forward to a great night's sleep on quality mattresses, with fluffy down duvets and pillows, sumptuous Egyptian cotton bedding and towels.

Downstairs is a cosy beamed living room with views over the garden and across the valley. It has a log burner, comfy sofas and dining area, with flat screen TV, DVD, CD player, super fast wi-fi, iPod dock, well stocked bookcase and games. The newly-fitted kitchen has a dishwasher, washer dryer, fridge freezer, electric cooker and microwave, and full range of cooking/roasting/baking equipment.

A particular feature of Lowside Barn is our elevated location giving us open panoramic views across the beautiful and unspoiled Lowther Valley. It's distinctive limestone scenery ranges from pastoral farmland dotted with pretty villages like ours, to further up the valley, the rugged fells around Haweswater that give access to theHigh Street range of mountains.

Walkers and cyclists can explore the many footpaths and quiet country lanes from our door, without having to use the car. Our limestone scenery is crisscrossed with ancient drystone walls and paths or 'lonnings', leading either down to the River Lowther, or up onto Askham Fell above the village. In 30 mins walk from the house up onto the fell, you can overlook spectacular views of Ullswater (only 3miles over the fell) and it's backdrop of mountains, looking towards Blencathra in the north. Up on our fell it's also fun to explore groups of prehistoric cairns and standing stones left by Helton's stone age settlers.

If you have children to entertain, it's only a pretty 45min walk from the cottage across the valley and the deer park of Lowther Castle, to the amazing new Lost Castle adventure playground and cafe in the woods behind. On your way back you'll need to allow time for a drink in either of our 2 great pubs in the next door village of Askham. Or in summer you'll love relaxing with a barbecue and glass of wine in our garden, enjoying the expansive view across the valley.

About Claire and Chris Robinson

After visiting the Lake District with family and friends all our lives, for outdoor adventures and special celebrations, we finally realised our dream of being able to live here in 2015. We have worked hard on Lowside Barn to enhance its original character to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, in an idyllic setting next to our house, surrounded by beautiful scenery......just what we have always looked for in a holiday cottage! We pride ourselves in our attention to detail and have equipped it to a high standard with every home comfort to make it feel like home from home for you.

We have a passion for the outdoors and between us have walked, kayaked and rock-climbed most of what is on our doorstep. Chris also has a special interest in geology and the landscape, he loves to share his knowledge and experience with our visitors. We have maps and guide books for almost everything....you'll find us knowledgeable and helpful if you need advice!

We absolutely love this special corner of the Lakes and keep pinching ourselves that we've achieved our dream of actually living here! It's wonderful that now we have the opportunity to share it with others. Our aim is to do all we can to enable you to have a really memorable experience of Lakeland and for this to become a special place for you, your family and friends too!

Claire and Chris Robinson purchased this barn in 2015

Why Claire and Chris Robinson chose Penrith

We love the peace, natural beauty and sense of history in this unspoiled and friendly village. It's in an amazing location, close enough to the rest of the Lake District, but tucked away in an easily accessible quiet corner, away from the crowds. We hope that you will also find it a special place to escape life's stresses to relax, rebalance and recharge.

What makes this barn unique

Whatever the season or your interests, you'll love this peaceful corner of the Lake District. You can enjoy its abundant birdlife and wild flowers in springtime, longer days out on the fells or lakes during the summer, the spectacular changing colours of autumn, then it's so romantic for a winter break when the mountains are covered with snow.

What better way to end your day than to snuggle up in front of the glowing log burner for a cosy candlelit night in, after a day out exploring all that the Lake District has to offer? Or treat yourselves to dinner out in one of our local award-winning pubs or restaurants?

Guestbook comments from the owner

Lowside is a really lovely property. Very comfortable, extremely well equipped and lots of character. Really great setting with gorgeous views. We loved being able to sit in the garden in the evenings and look across the hills. Claire and Chris are extremely helpful and Chris was a great source of information about local walks.

Our trip to Lowside for The Mirror Nationals 2018

  • 5 of 5

Claire and Chris were very helpful and friendly. Lowside was the perfect spot to explore the delights of The Lakes. The cottage was great for the 6 of us, clean with perfect holiday facilities and a lovely garden with a view best enjoyed in the evening light. A great holiday find - I was thrilled with my choice! Lovely cottage for a relaxing break

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is lovely, handy location and we had a great weekend there, visiting Penrith, Keswick and a boat trip on Derwentwater as well as lots of other stuff. A well equipped and comfortable place to relax in. A large chocolate cake baked for our arrival too!!! Although we did have difficulty playing the 'baby boomers' edition of Trivial Pursuit- 3 of us were babies in that era, so very challenging.

Peaceful retreat in quiet part of Lake District

  • 5 of 5

Really lovely place, brilliantly equipped, comfy beds, home from home. Despite many years of visiting the Lakes we had somehow managed to miss this very beautiful corner. Gorgeous daffodil-lined walks from the property, and we were visiting during lambing season, which was a delight. Claire and Chris were very helpful hosts and we were even greeted with a home made cake on arrival. Absolutely recommend, and would return at the drop of a hat.

Location

Car: recommended

Our nearest visitor attraction is a short walk from the house through a medieval deer park: the dramatic Lowther Castle and its fabulous Capability Brown grounds and garden which are being restored to former glory. With its cafe and amazing new adventure playground in the woods, it's a must if you have children to entertain, only an easy 1.5 mile walk from the house along a beautiful stretch of the River Lowther. On the walk back you can stop at the nearby Punchbowl Inn in the picture postcard next-door village of Askham.

Our nearest lake is the Ullswater, you can walk or cycle from the door up onto the fells behind our village for a breathtaking view of it, lying only 3 miles below you. Here you can walk to join the 20mile Ullswater Way around the lake, or just walk some sections of it combined with rides on the original Ullswater Steamers that link Pooley Bridge, Howtown, Glenridding and the Aira Force waterfall.

The fells around us between Ullswater and Haweswater give you access to the bigger mountains in Patterdale, High Street, the Helvellyn range and to the north, the majestic Blencathra.

We are only about 45 minutes drive from Keswick, Borrowdale and Derwentwater and about an hours drive via the Kirkstone Pass to Ambleside, Windermere and the central Lakes. Our favourite most peaceful lake, Buttermere, is also about an hour by car via the impressive Honister Pass.

Penrith (5 miles) has a mainline rail station, only 3 hours direct from London Euston. It is a historic market town with plenty of character and individual shops, boutiques and galleries as well as supermarkets. For convenience there is a well-stocked village store and off-license in Askham, 1 mile.

Lowside Barn is easily accessible from the M6 about 15 minutes drive away. Helton is therefore an ideal base for exploring the Lake District and its many attractions that are too numerous to list!

OUTDOOR ENTHUSIASTS

For fell walkers we have a file of both short and long routes for most of the Lake District mountains, which you are welcome to borrow. Chris has rock-climbed in the Lakes all his life and has most of the rock guide books too.

For cyclists, this is a top destination with a wide range of road and mountain-bike routes in the area, ranging from easy to strenuous, both off-road and on quiet country lanes. We have a list of routes we are happy to share. We also have secure bike storage, wash-down facilities and a range of tools for most repairs, though there is an excellent specialist cycle shop in Penrith.

For kayakers, we also have ample storage space for boats. We have paddled all the Lakes and can recommend good parking and put-in points for you. There is a very good sailing club on Ullswater that runs courses at all levels of ability. For swimmers, if the lakes are too daunting, Askham has its own heated outdoor swimming pool and picnic area open during the summer months!

Fly-fishing is available on the stretch of river below our house, Chris is a member of Penrith Angling Club, who sell week guest tickets. Horse riding is available locally too.

RECOMMENDED FOR EATING OUT

Askham: The Punchbowl Inn and The Queens Arms, 1m easy walk.

Clifton: The George & Dragon, our favourite gastro-pub (15mins drive)

Askham Hall garden, cafe and restaurant (1.5m)

The Gate Inn, Yanwath (3m)

The world famous Sharrow Bay Hotel on Ullswater, to really push the boat out! It's the original country house hotel, for a special and historic afternoon tea overlooking the lake.
