Barnacle Cottage is a mid terraced stone cottage which dates back to 1700 but it has been sympathetically modernised and kitted out with all the comforts of home. It has two bedrooms one with double bed and one with two single beds and there is a bed sofa downstairs. It features oak beams and exposed stone walls in the living room and two garden areas separated by a garden room which is ideal for summer dining. Flexible changeover days but Saturdays preferred in the Summer holiday period.

Barnacle cottage is ideally situated for exploring the best of Southern Lakeland with lake, fell and forest scenery all within easy reach and activities such as hiking, mountaineering, sailing, fishing and all sorts of watersports well catered for. You can even take a Segway ride through the Graythwaite estate on the shores of Lake Windermere. The Cumbrian coast is less well known but Morecambe Bay is a haven for wildlife. Every year there are half a dozen guided walks across the Bay with the Queen’s Guide Cedric Robinson who featured on Great Railway Journeys with Michael Portillo. There is even a model village to visit only half a mile up the road as well as Ducky’s Children’s Farm also in the village

As the cottage is located in the centre of the Flookburgh it is accessible all year round with excellent food shopping sourcing local products literally on your doorstep. There are several pubs serving good food within easy reach and the Hazelmere Café and Bakery in Grange-over-Sands has been voted Top Tea Place in Britain with regular awards for excellence from the Tea Guild. You may well have seen the Masterchef finalists cooking in a barn owned by Simon Rogan. His restaurant L’eclune is in nearby Cartmel but if that’s a little outside your budget- then try his more moderately priced bistro style restaurant called Rogan which is perfect for that special celebration.

Why Janet Wilson chose Flookburgh

Although I was born in the south my family originally came from the North West and after my father died I decided to buy Barnacle Cottage so that I could still enjoy visiting an area I knew so well as a child. My grandparents retired to Grange-over-sands and my aunt became the local Health Visitor, visiting many of the mums and babies in the surrounding area, organising regular clinics and running health education programmes in local schools. Flookburgh was at the heart of her patch. When I was visiting on school holidays I would sometimes act as her 'voluntary helper' . Although the villagers today are too young to have known her she may well have weighed them as babies and advised their parents on childcare and anyone aged over 80 will certainly remember her!

What makes this cottage unique

I was very keen to buy a country cottage as my second home but not having anyone around who was good at DIY I didn't want to have to undertake major renovation work. So Barnacle Cottage was the ideal purchase. Although the original stone structure dated back to 1700 it had all been extended and modernised with a pretty back garden and even the decorations were to my taste! In addition it was in the middle of a village, half and hour from the M6 and a 7 minute walk from a station making it easily accessible even in the middle of winter.

  • The bathroom has a bath with an electric shower into it with shower panel, a toilet ( there is a second toilet in the garden room) and washbasin. It is lit through a skylight window and there is a hot towel rail.

  • Bedroom 1 at the back of the cottage has a standard double bed, wardrobe and 2 small chest of drawers one with free standing mirror. There is a portable TV and clock radio and the room features a pleasant rural view across the rooftops to fields with the ribbon of the sea beyond. There is extra bedding in the wardrobe. Bedroom 2 faces onto the street. It has two 3 foot single beds. One is stored underneath the other but is easily erected if there are two guests. There is a wardrobe, a small chest of drawers, a small washstand and extra bedding in the wardrobe.

Downstairs is open plan with open stairs (with rail) rising to the upper floor. The lounge features exposed stonework. There are two comfy sofas in tapestry design and a dark wood table with padded dining chairs. Downstairs is carpeted except for the kitchen area which has cushion floor. From the back door you go into the courtyard garden which has a wooden seat, decking path and pots. This leads you into the Garden room, a large space with table and chairs. There is a second toilet and two other utility areas. The garden room leads to a private cottage garden which is fully fenced and has rear access.

Homely, everything needed, supplied. Would have enjoyed the garden area, had it been a different time of year. Bulbs just ready for flowering in pots. Nice walking, and plenty of places for coffee and light lunches in the surrounding area.

Good property in nice location. Great for the price.

We had a fantastic time. Cottage was cosy and clean. Had all the utensils and cooking items you would need e.g Microwave, freezer, cooker etc. Garden was enclosed and pretty. Would be even better in the summer. Sofa was cosy and TV worked fine. Great phone signal. Pub literally over the road and a shop and cafe so close too. We will definitely return again as it was such a good price.

Came for national league game in Barrow - excellent!

Very well equipped and clean. Good location and easy to find. Would like to return in warmer weather to make use of garden room and outside area. Brilliant pre-arrival information provided. Would recommend.

Nice cozy cottage

We really enjoyed our stay in Flookburgh, this a great location for exploring the South Lakes and the cottage is really nice, very comfortable, and whilst we didn't make best use of it due to the weather, it has great outside space as well, including a garden room. We'd certainly recommend the cottage and would return in the future.

Full of character

Spent a lovely week in Barnacle cottage. Everything you could want is there. As everybody says, the fish & chip shop is very good and the local shop has most of what you would need. To modernise the cottage would spoil the whole experience so it is good just the way it is. Everything was just as it was described and clean & tidy on arrival. The dogs were safe in the garden & had a good time too.

Comfortable property in an unusual little town

A comfortable, welcoming, clean property where we quickly felt at home. Everything you could possibly need in the kitchen was available. Very popular with dog owners.

Flookburgh is close to Grange Over Sands, Cark railway station, Holker Hall and Cartmel. A wonderful fish and chip shop is nearby as is a welcoming pub eatery and a decently stocked convenience store with a cash machine. Plenty of other pub eateries are just a short drive away.

The cottage is in the centre of the popular fishing village of Flookburgh which lies just off the shores of Morecambe Bay famous for its potted shrimps. It is close to many places of interest such as Holker Hall and Cartmel Priory and is about 40 minutes drive from Windermere and Coniston, thus offering the best of Lakeland and coastal scenery with a stretch of the Cumbrian Coastal path being accessible from the front door.

Fees No additional mandatory fees

A deposit of £75 is required for booking periods of up to a week. For 2 week bookings the deposit is £150.The balance is due 28 days before the visit. Payment by bank transfer is preferred but Paypal is also accepted with the addition of a 3.4 % on the rental payment to cover charges. An additional charge of £50 may be made when occupancy exceeds 5 people.
