Lovely historic cottage situated on a 12 acre ocean front property, Little Red is a special place. Turner Cove is on the east side of Isle Au Haut, approximately 2 miles from town. Formerly a one room school house and built in the late 1800's, the structure has been completely renovated.
In 2015, an enclosed porch has been added for additional relaxation, and a sleeping area. Though not fancy, it has a simple, romantic, and peaceful setting for those who wish to escape from the busy world. There's a short path through the property leading down the ocean, and amazing views.
Close to Long Pond, and Acadia National Park, Little Red is in a great location as a base camp for island exploration!
My parents discovered Isle Au Haut in the early seventies. The family began camping in Duck Harbor, and fell in love with the rugged beauty of the island. After a few years, my parents purchased Turner Cove and commenced on major home and property improvements.
Today the Little Red Schoolhouse is a greatly improved structure, quite comfortable in its plain Maine charm. A
recent addition to the building has nearly doubled the
CJ Turner purchased this cottage in 1982
It's location out of town on the East side, allows beautiful views
of Mount Desert Island 20 miles to the Northeast. It's a 2 mile
trek to town, and about the same to Long Pond. Peaceful, and
relaxing is the best way to describe the setting.
Our family loves this special place on the planet, and we know you will too!
Do you want to get away to a wonderful, tranquil place complete with beautiful views, great hiking and biking, etc.? A stay at Little Red on Isle Au Haut captured the essence of Maine for us. We were looking for the beauty, peace, and relaxation that we remembered with previous trips to Maine and stays at Isle Au Haut. This topped them all. The property at Turner Cove suited us perfectly; it's welcoming and pleasantly rustic - a former school house with just a few other properties not too far away, but far enough. The property was clean and well-maintained; any questions we had were answered quickly and any needs were promptly taken care of. We took our whole family, and we'd love to go again and take some friends with us. We had extremely easy access to the bikes (as well as kayaks that we did not use), and it was a far cry from the crowds that we encountered at Camden and Bar Harbor. From hiking at Boom Beach and Duck Harbor, to biking around the island, to swimming at Long Pond, to driving the SUV "Suzy", to taking in the beauty of boating around the island - it was all an incredibly relaxing adventure. The store had food for us to prepare and cook, and you can get lobsters from the locals. Five stars for our stay and our host!
This was our first visit to Isle Au Haut and "Little Red" was the perfect home base for hiking, biking, kayaking, and playing music. No car needed - the bikes provided got us everywhere we wanted to go. Karen greeted us on arrival and drove us to the cottage (and returned us to the ferry landing at the end of the week). House was very clean and kitchen had all we needed to cook our own meals. Favorite hikes were Goat Trail to Cliff Trail to Western Head; Duck Harbor Trail from Ranger station to Deep Cove; and Thunder Gulch Trail. Don't miss getting up for a sunrise - they are spectacular from Turner Cove. Visit the Lobster Lady for a haddock sandwich. Stop and see Kendra at the Gift shop - she'll deliver fresh lobsters to your door! Wifi is available at the library or store. Little Red is highly recommended.
If you are looking for a nature escape for yourself, a quiet romantic retreat, or a quality off the grid vacation with a small family Little Red is a great option. It's a nice clean cottage on the beautiful and dramatic island of Isle Au Haut. Great shoreline hiking in Acadia National Park is a bike ride away. There are nice sturdy mountain bikes available that are necessary for the rough roads in Acadia. In a nutshell, Little Red is a wonderful cottage in the middle of spectacular and secluded Isle Au Haut. I would highly recommend Little Red if you want a real island getaway.
We enjoyed ourselves very much on Isle au Haut and staying at "Little Red" .Very friendly and helpful family which made our stay even better. We hiked, biked, fished, loved visiting the Long Pond for swimming and relaxed. GREAT Vacation and look forward to returning.
The beauty of Isle au Haut is best explored in Acadia National Park which is approximately half the area of Isle Au Haut. There are many well maintained hiking trails, and opportunity for adventures along the rocky coast line. Climbing up Duck Harbor Mountain captures amazing views of Penobscot Bay and the mainland. Swimming in Long Pond on a hot summer day is invigorating. Biking around the island offers many sights, and access to many trails.
