Overview

About the property

The view, the property and the proximity to Annecy itself is superb. The hotel was once a 'Relay Hotel' for Thespians and Actors alike. It was once the favourite hideaway of Ernst Hemmingway who would visit here for inspiration and tranquillity.

Not quite as good as it looked

  • 2 of 5

First the good stuff. The location is spectacular for sure and the views from the terrace outside are the stuff of dreams. The apartment is mostly modern and the main bed was very comfortable (and a good size at 180cm). TV/Sky/DVD was good and worked easily. It was well equipped in terms of appliances. There was plenty of wardrobe space - hanging and drawers. The sofa was also very comfy.

Now the not so good stuff. It isn't as spacious as it seems - that is probably a facet of modern digital cameras but the second and third bedrooms were pretty tight. The loo was small as was the shower. But for two people it was just about OK - not sure how it would be at full occupancy.

It faces north and is somewhat dark inside, especially the corridor which joins the rooms together. You would need lights on. That also means the terrace doesn't get as much sun as you would expect. There were no sun loungers anyway but the outdoor furniture was OK for eating at.

We did not feel the apartment had been cleaned very well and the more we looked, the more dirt we found. Finding a greasy cooker hood that was covered in dust was not good nor was finding a very dirty/greasy grill on the BBQ. Many of the surfaces did not feel or look clean and the floor was dusty under the tables and furniture.

On arrival (we were not met) the door was almost impossible to unlock - we only got in because the local manager talked us through what to do. It required a significant force. That also meant we could not re-lock it and so we had to wait two days for a repair man during which time we had no choice but to leave the apartment unlocked.

Both basins in the bathroom leaked on to the towels below and the shower leaked under the door. The basins were fixed by the repair man but one started leaking again. There were boards on the terrace that had risen up and could easily have tripped you up or stubbed your toe.

However the biggest issue was the astonishing response from the owner. We initially contacted the local manager who was very helpful and we reported a few other items that we felt needed attention. The owner took exception to this, insisting we contacted her so she could get costs. Nothing else was fixed during our stay. Deeply unimpressed with that approach to customer service.

Annecy itself is a bit touristy and very busy. Struggled to find a decent place to eat at lunch time even though there appeared to be a lot of choice - much of it was all the same.

Not somewhere to revisit.

Zeer mooi en ruim appartement

  • 5 of 5
