About the property

2 Large Bedrooms, 2.5 Baths, Lovely English Garden Close To Everything

Seahorse was built in the 1700's by a fisherman. She is located in the center of Historic Nantucket in what is known as the Fish Lots, just blocks from Main Street. New to the market due to a total restoration, Seahorse is a bright and airy cottage that captures both the charm and history of Nantucket's architecture. She boasts of exposed beams in the ceilings, the original pine floors, wood stove, fireplace, and soapstone counters; yet she has all the modern conveniences including off street parking. Seahorse is furnished with a charming combination of antique furniture and portraits that reflect Nantucket's history. Outside there is a shower and patio that is surrounded by a traditional English Garden that is the envy of the neighborhood. There is nothing ordinary about the little gem. Sea Horse is listed as historically significant with the Historic Society of Nantucket because she is one of a kind. She has also been included on the Nantucket Preservation Walking Tour due to the detail to restoration with Historic preservation in mind.

About Cara Morgan

My husband and I purchased this house to live in. It was a beat up falling down mess and we loved it. We are builders that specialize in Historic Renovation. This was our first baby, the one we renovated for ourselves. We lived in Seahorse until 2003 when we moved off Island to raise our family. Since then we go on and off but mostly off since our weekends are taken up with competitive soccer, and summers are our busy time at work, renovating/building/restoring.

Cara Morgan purchased this cottage in 1999

Why Cara Morgan chose Nantucket Town

This property is a direct reflection of who we are as people. Smaller house, larger yard. Everything in and out of the house was done by the homeowners. It is the house for you if you want to be in town and close to the beaches. But most of all it is the perfect Nantucket Historical House, it is even featured on the Historic Preservation tour as to how to renovate with Nantucket's history in mind. The kitchen was designed by our friends Peter and Kathleen who were the original owners of Oran Mor.

What makes this cottage unique

What makes this house unique is that almost everything in it came from the Island. From tag sales to estate sales to antique auctions, over the last 18 years we have been collecting unique art and furniture that come from Nantucket.

Great Location

  • 2 of 5

We stayed here for part of our honeymoon in September. Seahorse has a great location within walking distance of many places to eat and things to do in the heart od town. The house itself was really neat, lots of details we appreciated like the under bannister lighting, outdoor shower, and the claw foot tub upstairs. During our stay we encountered a few problems, the hot water tank stopped working, the air conditioner stopped working, and there were many ants in the kitchen even though there were ant traps left out prior to our arrival. Cara was prompt in having an on island friend come by to sort the hot water tank out and responded as to how to get the air conditioning to work again. Unfortunately we would not stay here again or recommend it to others. Once we were home communication about our damage deposit being returned was poor. Communications we received about the deposit were defensive and our emails were not read correctly which resulted in our deposit being returned late. Owner was unprofessional and rude and tainted the memories of our stay at this lovely property.

Owner's Response: I am very sorry that this tenant chose to write a negative review. During her stay at our home we received and email and/or text at least once a day regarding something that was missing and or wrong with the property. Every single time, no matter how small the request we sent someone over to correct the issue and every time it was corrected within an hour. The hot water tank was not broken, they ran it out, something that has never happened prior to this week even when there were 6 people in the house. The air conditioning was not broken they ran it when it was 62 degrees out and humid with the windows open which froze the coils. Neither time did I ever say anything but sorry, we will come deal with it. And we did. I knew nothing about any ants as she never said a word regarding it until now. Otherwise we would have sent someone over to deal with it, like we did every time she called/texted/emailed. I got an outrageous electric bill for the duration of their stay as a result of the air conditioner running constantly during a week when it was on average 72 degrees during the day and 60 at night, and still I did not say a word. I was and always have been responsive and courteous. The full deposit was returned within the 30 days required by the contract even though I was asked to cancel it and reissue the check because it hadn't come soon enough for her comfort level. After several harassing emails regarding my perceived incompetence regarding the deposit I ask her to stop emailing me unless she did not receive the deposit. She continued to email me and when I did not respond I got an email saying there was a negative review. I am saddened but not surprised. I have been renting my lovely cottage for 20 years and never have we ever had a negative review or experience until this one. I have never not returned a deposit or even been late. Not once. I am sad that this is now on our record as it really isn't about us or our home at all. I felt like we did everything in our power to make this client happy. I am hoping that ALL the other positive reviews on this website and others will illustrate this point.

Comfortable, Attractive, Authentic

  • 5 of 5

With another couple, we enjoyed our four days at Seahorse in mid-December. On a quiet street, this lovely home made a deep, favorable impression on us. The refinishing and up-dating of this 18th century place was done in the best way. The appliances are modern and top-of-the-line. Just notice the 5-burner gas stove with a large burner in the middle—just right for steaming lobsters, kitchen is equipped to make good family meals.. The four of us ate out. The best meal and best service we had on the Island was dinner at Queequeg’s. Best breakfasts (and fine service) were at Island Kitchen.

The beautiful woodwork made the deepest impression on me. Just look at the below-the-counter cabinetry. The doors are a warm brown, the drawers perfectly dovetailed. You’ll see the way they were planned and put together to maximize cabinet space. Or look at the folksy way the inside of the back door is secured--no metal latch, but tight as a drum. Even people who are not antique-enthusiasts (as I am not) will be impressed by this place. Yes, the first-floor bathroom floor does tilt a bit, but the fine, comfortable shower will make you forgive that.

Both couples liked the beds they slept well in (firm but not hard), and the sheets and blankets were first-class. We had plenty of hot water, and the furnace kept the house at a comfortable temperature. We enjoyed a couple of evening fires in the standing, soap-stone fireplace just for the cozy feeling, yet the furnace corrected, and we didn’t overheat the house. The person who decorated this house, the owner, has a good eye, good taste and respects the history of Seahorse. The owner is responsive to any concerns you may have, and an owner’s friend was nearby to quickly fix the furnace that didn’t start right away.

We had any easy drive into town, five minutes from the major grocery store (Stop and Shop) with both standard and deluxe items. Liquor and wine store is attached.

Mild weather let us enjoy the nice patio with whimsical sculptures. The off-street parking space is very narrow, but there is an on-street parking space you can use. A town parking lot (1-week limited use) is just a block away.

Easy access to the airport. We'd come back.

the only downside is having to leave...

We were two couples staying here for Thanksgiving and it was PERFECT for us. The house has a great layout - kitchen open to the living area with wood stove; bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms - and a perfect location for walking to town or getting on the bike paths. I had some concerns about cooking a turkey there (admittedly not a problem many vacationers have in mind) but the kitchen is well-equipped and the appliances updated and all in good repair. Furniture has that slightly-faded, wonderfully comfortable quality so hard to find, and the beds were comfortable. Plenty of towels, knives were good, wifi strong enough for four to be checking email and football scores seemingly constantly. The owner was quick to respond to any and all questions before and during the stay. We're planning our next trip here already.

Amazing Nantucket Rental

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful Nantucket home, very charming and authentic. I have stayed here for 3 summers and look forward to renting again next year. Pine Street is a quiet side street close to Main Street and downtown. The home is very well-appointed with a wonderful yard, patio and outdoor shower.

Home away from home!!

  • 5 of 5

We have been coming to Nantucket for years and Seahorse is our favorite place to stay! It is very warm and homey, and extremely comfortable. We love the decorating style of the owners: classic and tasteful. The collection of artwork is great!, and the garden is beautiful. The location is perfect, just a short walk to shops, restaurants, the Whaling Museum and many Historic sites. Off street parking is a plus. Can't wait to go back next year!!!

Great weekend getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We visited the island to run the Nantucket Half Marathon and were lucky enough to find Seahorse as our home for the weekend. The cottage is comfortable and adorable, and a very short walking distance to Main Street. We had a lovely weekend thanks to Cara and her lovely home!
