CORTIJO NUEVO - 'Dare to be different'! This charming hideaway offers the perfect retreat for those who enjoy the tranquillity of a rural setting, without being too far from civilisation or the beach. Easy access, not isolated as many traditional country properties can be. Here discover a lovely tranquil setting, just outside Puntalón village: yet only 3kms from busy Motril town with all amenities, long history and Spanish style.
The old Cortijo has been lovingly restored into three independent homes. The original farmhouse used by the resident British owner Patrick, Casa Pequeña, the pretty cottage and El Apartamento a more modern spacious apartment.
All homes are set in wonderfully exotic, sub-tropical gardens with mature palms and flowering trees, interesting shrubs and scented plants; essentially private and relaxing with fantastic sea and mountain views.

Further afield, Sevilla, Cordoba & the Sierra Nevadas. Close by, discover the rugged Granada coast many other small resorts, lovely unspoilt sunny beaches & tapas bars.
Probably appeals more to the traveller seeking an unusual rental property: not located in a typical resort built for holiday-makers. This is a traditional Spanish area, working town nearby with all amenities and open all year (no closed season), experience the Siesta & village fiestas, sample fresh food & wine - both excellent & cheap. Mix with the locals and use your Spanish, English is not spoken widely - you will definitely feel at home in 'real Spain', not some tourist ghetto!
NEW TRIAL POLICY 2017: No infants or children under the age of 16 years allowed, to help maintain the sense of calm, privacy and relaxation in the lovely gardens and swimming pool area.
GENERAL: Puntalón 0.7kms has a small church, 2 simple bars and a restaurant, untouched by tourists and very Spanish! However, for everyday needs easy to use Motril 3kms a thriving Spanish market town with excellent shops, numerous restaurants/bars, cinema/theatre and some nightlife. Daily indoor market, twice weekly general street market, many churches, historical buildings, museum and excellent tourist office by the beautiful park entrance. Also a large municipal swimming pool complex, plus aqua-park in Almuñecar.
Patrick, the British owner lives in the Cortijo, along with 3 well behaved, quiet & friendly dogs; Dino, Boris & Hector and is able to advise on activities/excursions in the area and happy to deal with any requests.
The property has been rented and managed for many years by Patrick to travellers from all over the world and many return as similar properties are few and far between!
Comprehensive house book & selection of maps/guide books available.
The Cortijo is both a convenient base for touring Andalucia and a relaxing place to unwind.
CLIMATE: Cortijo Nuevo, can be enjoyed differently through each season.
WINTER is short, December-February, often Sunny & warm by day - cooler in the evenings. Snow & frosts never experienced on the coast, (very different Inland around La Alpujarra!) temperature rarely drops below 16°c. (6ºc overnight) Most chance of rain in November - possible to eat in the garden, even at Christmas!
SPRING late February - May. Temperature starts to warm, feels like British Summer - abundance of wild flowers/blossom on hillsides, evenings are light.
SUMMER June - September, hot & dry - NO rain. Although as the Cortijo is at sea level & very near to the coast, benefits from any breeze passing! Adopt Spanish hours, siesta in the afternoon - dine at sunset & stay up late by the pool!
AUTUMN October/Nov, rather like British Summer - can still be warm, cooler in the evenings. Excellent time for touring, visiting historical Malaga, Granada, Sevilla, Ronda avoiding the Summer traffic!
SPECIAL GARDEN: CASA PEQUEÑA, proudley announces it's NUMBER ONE position on homeaway.co.uk (Jan 2009) for Spain. Keen gardeners very welcome to potter, take cuttings home or even help with maintenance - if time allows between excursions or relaxing under a tree with a good book and glass of Rioja! British Citizen now living full-time here in Motril (Andalucía) with my three friendly dogs and botanical gardens to keep me busy. Trained Lawyer, moved over to Spain, January 2001 after running Post Office/general store for many years in Dorset. Cumbrian by birth, but rarely travel back now - love the simple Andalucían lifestyle: stress-free, sunshine and time...
PATRICK SANDERSON purchased this cottage in 1990
Fell in love with Cortijo Nuevo immediately: in the countryside, Spanish area with few British residents or expats. Best of all Worlds: tranquil country setting, yet only 3kms (5 minutes by car) from bustling market town and port of Motril, South from Granada. Not isolated like many rural properties & excellent access. Needed lots of work, reform and the garden was a simple alotment - almost a blank canvas for garden design...The area was non-touristy and twenty five years later remains unspoilt, but with better road networks...
Holiday here to enjoy a special sub-tropical garden, unusual in most holiday homes. Regularly described as magical, a haven or oasis.
Probably the 'best' Winter climate in mainland Europe. Snow and frosts never visit this coastal garden, at sea level and protected by the mighty Sierra Nevadas behind. This Costa Tropical mico-climate allows for a wide varierty of exotic plantlife, avocados, mangoes and bananas grow easily in the area.
Remember, easy access to many diverse beaches, mountain walks and historical cities...Costa Tropical Granada Motril has it all
'you've done a fantastic job with the casita & gardens, it's a fantastic environment for a relaxing holiday.'
Rachael & Iwan, Clevedon Somerset.
'we had a lovely holiday & felt like we were living in our own Spanish home. We certainly did not want to leave... it's a very relaxing place & will miss sitting up on the roof terrace in the evenings with the mountains as scenery.'
Jodie & Dave, Sheffield.
'thank you for a wonderful holiday...one of the most tranquil & relaxing ... the gardens a paradise for dilettante artists, which corner to sketch first... we will be back'. Scrivener family, Dunstable Beds.
' 'we had a perfectly perfect holiday.. a combination of all sorts of things, but particularly the lovely house & gardens, Ben dog & the lovely relaxed atmosphere that you create... we'll be back' Katie & Susan, London
'thanks for the hospitality & lovely apartment that you have, its one of the nicest places we have ever stayed in' Kes & Catherine, Derby.
My daughter booked this for one of my post 60th birthdays! Really nice spot. Patrick is great, really laid back - no hassle - anyway, a fellow Cumbrian so to be expected. The dogs are good company too.
The house is delightful, wonderful gardens and roof terraces for watching the birdies and picking avocados and a real suntrap! DVDs, CDs, satellite if you wanna know what's on at home.
The locale itself is a great centre for going up into the mountains, which is what we did, or a ten minute drive to the beaches, restaurants and hotspots. I really enjoyed it and would certainly return.
Now back home and studying the reviews again - I agree with the people from Germany who visited in Sept 2015 compared to all the others from years previous. I am unsure of what has gone wrong but this place is very unkempt, tired and in need of a facelift both in the gardens and in the casita which we rented. When you meet Patrick he comes across as a very nice gentleman and shows you round some thing that on the surface looks great, but once you are alone to discover your surroundings its another view.
One should not have to clean the place thoroughly on arrival, this should be done for you and its for the tenant then to leave it as found. We left the place after one hour as not prepared to clean for Patrick. We had to email him as he popped out when we decided to leave and he was shocked that we thought there was a problem and presumed we didn't like to Spanish Rural Location. Far from it, if I wanted Blackpool in the sun I would have booked into Benidorm. Luckily we found a lovely authentic Spanish Hotel with no English and enjoyed the rest of the week.
My wife and myself along with our eight month old Shih Tzu spent very enjoyable and tranquil long weekend at the property. The apartment was very well equipped and exactly as described it was typically Spanish, for us it felt like home from home.
The gardens are absolutely wonderful far better than we imagined with plants from various parts of the world also three very friendly dogs can sometimes be found, the spaniel "Hugo" quite often can be seen cooling off in one of the many water features or fountains.
There is a reasonable size pool at the far end of the gardens (we tried it once but too cold for us, living in Spain for the past seven years we are acclimatised and do not swim this early in the year, Brrr!). the pool terrace has a nice shaded area to chill out, Also in this area is a summer kitchen with barbacoa y gas ring, paella pan if you are feeling really adventurous.
Patrick the owner of the property besides being a very passionate gardener is a very approachable and friendly person without encroaching on your privacy.
Although the property is situated amongst the "plastic greenhouses" do not let this deter you from visiting this tranquil casa. The costas Salobreña, Almúneca are only a short drive away, or Granada and Alhambra no more than forty minute drive.
I would recommend this property whether you want to use it as a base for sight seeing or visiting the many beaches along the Costa Tropical (which hasn't been ruined by mass tourism) or just chill on your roof or garden terrace within the wonderful gardens that Patrick has created surrounding the Casa Nuevo.
Highly recommendable and we will definately be returning to this hidden paradise.
We had the benefit of being able to stay in both Casa Pequena and El Apartamento. Both properties have their advantages and it is difficult to choose between the two. The Casa is quirky being on different levels but seems to have easier access to the gardens. This is really a mindset thing as El Apartamento is really just as accessible but we loved the large roof terrace in the apartment.
A wonderful location for exploring the south coast and Los Alpujarras, especially since the motorway is now complete. Travelling to Malaga airport is now much easier.
The gardens are amazing with lots of little hidden corners - every trip through them seemed to throw up a new, previously undiscovered delight. Night time is especially rewarding with all the garden lighting.
We can't wait to return next year and take advantage of Patrick's great hospitality once again as well as meeting up with his three very friendly dogs.
We stayed at the Casa Pequena for 5 days and thoroughly enjoyed it.
The casita was clean, well appointed and tastefully decorated. The garden is large, luxuriant, amazing, with a very nice pool and arbor at the other end (not visible from the casita).
There is a very well stocked Supermarket in Motril, with fresh and local products, and everything one might need, 10 min away by car. In addition, one can reach the nice seashore village of Salobrena in about 15 minutes. Salobrena has nice beaches as well as good restaurants (try El Penon at the end of the main beach for their excellent seafood). We liked it even better than Nerja, which is nice but further away and more touristy.
Patrick was a very helpful and gracious host, and the dogs were friendly too. We would come back any time.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the little oasis that is Casa Pequena. Surrounded by beautiful gardens, the house was a quirky delight. Patrick was a great host, stocking up the kitchen with essentials such as wine and beer before we arrived. Hector, Boris and Dino were super friendly.
Casa Pequena is well located for a wide range of activities, nestled amongst the greenhouses for which the area is reknowned. We spent a couple of days in Granada, a couple of days exploring the Sierra Nevada and a couple of days chilling on the roof garden of the house. The beach was just a short drive away. We would definitely recommend Casa Pequena.
Ideal holiday destination for those travellers seeking a slower pace of life for a week or more in authentic Andalucia.
To help maintain the sense of calm, privacy and relaxation No infants or children under the age of 16 years permitted to stay.
MOTRIL is found on the lush coastal plain 70kms South from Granada, midway between Malaga and Almeria .
Area known for the market garden growing greenhouses and terraced hillsides, producing all manner of Sub-tropical fruits & vegetables - agriculture is as important as tourism to the local economy.
Motril itself is packed with many restaurants, bars (some nightclubs), as well as plenty of shops and places of historical interest.
The area probably appeals more to the independent traveller, looking to escape the many developments and 'British ghettos' found nearby on the Costa del Sol!
This area still remains Spanish - ideal touring base for Southern Andalucia or for bargain property searches!
Excellent Winter climate and interesting holiday destination - possible to ski one day, beach the next!
Perfect for couples or working trips - Wi-Fi network.
Other Activities: painting, gardening, photography, bird watching, shopping.
