Overview

About the property

2BR elegant, modern designed sanctuary in an idyllic tropical setting

IMPORTANT NOTE: As of 3-July-2018, Hwy 130 has been reopened and Kalapana area businesses, including vacation rentals, are authorized to resume operations. The ongoing eruption has stabilized to the point that this area is in no immediate danger. However, guests who chose to stay here may experience some volcanic effects, including vog and Pele's hair. Vog is 'volcanic smog'- like the haze of many big cities but produced by the volcano instead of by cars and industry. Vog presence depends on wind conditions. When it is present here it's considered 'nuisance level' to healthy adults but should be avoided by small children, the elderly, and people with respiratory problems. Pele's hair is glass-like filaments of volcanic rock that can settle on the ground and can lodge skin if stepped on, so footwear should always be worn outside– even on the lanai – and removed before entering the house to avoid tracking in or damaging the floor. Guests who book in this area do so with the understanding that these conditions may be present and that refunds will not be offered because of them. Guests should also be aware that the situation could change at any time. If the authorities feel there is any threat of danger you may have to cut your stay short, in which case any unused nights would be refunded.

Enjoy a week in paradise in this modern private screen house floating in the embrace of three spectacular monkeypod trees ('ohai in Hawaiian).

Hale 'Ohai is an elegant sanctuary, a place to rest and reflect, a place to gather for special occasions, a place from which to explore and discover The Big Island of Hawaii.

Dwell Magazine has a feature on Hale Ohai at http://www.dwell.com/articles/lava-flow-4-the-big-island.html

Enjoy the nearby clothing optional beach where dolphins spin and frolic with hardy swimmers, hike to the lava by moonlight, snorkel at the tide pools, swim in the crater lake, indulge in a watsu massage. Dine out or come home to the fully equipped kitchen, and your choice of dining counter or Noguchi table. Take in the view of the monkeypod tree canopied garden as you relax in the screened living room or on the sun drenched 500 square foot deck just outside the porch doors.

As the sun sets, you'll be ready to spiral down the lava-red staircase to your choice of two king size master bedrooms where you can have your own island dreams. Sleep in comfort on memory foam mattresses. At sunrise, awaken to bird song in the kipuka, then start your day Puna style: a warm outdoor shower, yoga on the lanai, or a walk to the beach

Guestbook comments from the manager

What a lovely home! It's amazing to be in a house that is almost completely open on one side (fully screened), to watch weather come and go, and to be perfectly content, dry and bug free, on the inside. The Monkey Pod tree that graces the backyard sets the stage for this house. We enjoyed the privacy and I enjoyed doing yoga on the deck! The biggest challenge we had was multiple working in the kitchen in the narrow space between the fridge and the sink. A small thing in what is a cook's kitchen. Mahalo for a wonderful experience. This house is a gem.

Oh Gosh Amazing!!!!!

  • 5 of 5

Oh my Gosh, so amazing, so perfect, so jealous....my family loved this home and it was among the highlights of our trip. What a gift to have the privilege of staying here. Thank you so very much. The frogs are crazy harmonic, James Brownesque, Get on Down! but even that was spectacular. Loved everything about this house, location, cleanliness, uniqueness, - I cant say enough about how amazing it is. Much appreciated.

Amazing property in a stunning location.

  • 5 of 5

Cool and contemporary home which loses none of the comfort to achieve the former. My husband, brother, sister-in-law and I loved our stay here. The kitchen was well-equipped and we enjoyed our meals together, the ability to do yoga out on the deck in the morning and star-gazing at night. My husband and I also enjoyed the outdoor shower and rested comfortably each night in our bed. There are not enough superlatives!

The Hale 'Ohai is just 10 min walk to the (clothing optional) Kehena black sand beach, where if you're lucky you can swim with the spinner dolphins. Only a 15 minute drive is “Ahalanui Beach Park” (a naturally warmed 95 degree seawater pond) as well as Wai Opae Protected tide-pools in Kapoho where you will find some of the best swimming and snorkeling that can be found on the east of our island. Beginning or ending your day in either of these beautiful and unique places is an experience that is not to be missed. Just 5 minutes away is Uncle Robert’s, a great place to take in the local fair, with its kava bar and local Hawaiian entertainment. And SPACE Farmers Market is about 4 miles away for Saturday morning shopping.

Puna Beach Palisades is 50 minutes from Volcano National Park, 35 minutes from Hilo airport, and 12 minutes from the quaint village of Pahoa, which has some of the best dining in our area featuring Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Italian, Tex-Mex and local Hawaiian restaurants.
