Lisboa is famous for its light. It’s a city made of contrasts - the alleys in the old neighbourhoods and the wide boulevards, the historical buildings and the new architecture of the Estado Novo period, the busy cafes in the center or the lingering terrazzas along the waterfront.

Ifit is your first time in Lisbon, it is wise to make a reconnaissance trip on a bus tour. This way you get the bigger picture. Afterwards all you need is a city map and information on public transports: metro, buses and last but not the least, the tram. There are plenty of choices to take you around town. Still, there are things and places where you should walk your way through. From the Botanical Gardens in Rua da Escola Politécnica , to Principe Real’s public garden where you can refresh yourself in a typical Quiosque, to Bairro Alto and the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcantâra, to Chiado and the Cais do Sodré areas. Not to mention the Alfama and Mouraria neighbourhoods around the Castelo de São Jorge and the Graça district. There are plenty of beautiful areas to discover on foot.

Known as the “City of the seven hills”, there are many scenic spots that ensure magnificent views. The best known are the miradouros of the Castelo de São Jorge, Portas do Sol, Graça, Nossa Senhora do Monte, São Pedro de Alcântara and Santa Catarina. There is also the Santa Justa elevator, in the Chiado area, and the cable cars of Gloria, Bica and Lavra, all of them classified as National Monuments.

In the western part of the city, Belém is another district you shouldn´t miss. A stroll through this area lets you discover the waterfront and the Jerónimos church and monastery, the Torre de Belém, the Centro Cultural de Belém and above all you can taste the city’s most acclaimed delicacy the famous Pastéis de Belém.
