Sound Relief! Family-friendly Cottage on the Crystal Coast

People10
Bedrooms 5

Space 2,400 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 4 nights

Overview

About the property

Sleeps 10 with majestic water views and minutes from the beaches & dining!

When you see the water, take a deep breath and say 'Ah-h-h-h!' You've just experienced the Sound Relief Cottage difference -- on the Carolina Crystal Coast.

You're minutes from Emerald Isle and Atlantic Beach with the entire Bogue Sound out in front of you. Your refuge rests just 50 feet from the water. A steady southwesterly breeze blows through the windows and screened porch.

The water in front of the cottage provides a convenient and more private way to enjoy the water. There is a 400 foot tidal flat between land and waist-deep water. The Intra-Coastal Waterway (ICW) passes by farther out.

Want to catch some rays? There are numerous places to sun at the cottage – on the deck or in the yards. And you can get in a good game of horseshoes. Star-gazing is always a fun activity. Who can resist a good game of checkers?

Guests will find opportunities to harvest clams and scallops, to cast a net for shrimp and bait fish, and to wade the flats at night in search of flounder.

Small aluminum boats, canoes and kayaks may be launched from the property. For larger boats, two ramps are located within a mile of the cottage. Public ramps are also located in Morehead, Beaufort, Cape Carteret. There is no pier available at this time, but many skippers choose to anchor their boats just beyond the tidal flat and wade in as opposed to pulling the boat at the end of the day. Marina slips may be rented nearby. Rentals of power boats, kayaks, sail boats and PWCs are available nearby. Check the blue book upon arrival.

Bogue sound is home to a portion of the Intra-Coastal Waterway (ICW). Just across the ICW from the cottage are shell islands – the result of dredging that started back in the 1930’s. Shell collectors, bird watchers and sun bathers gather on the islands to enjoy the local environs. Many species of birds nest on the islands and are very protective of their nesting sites – especially the small terns and Oyster Catchers. “Watch your head!”

About Bill Fletcher

On an private road bordering Bogue Sound on the Southern Outer Banks of North Carolina, Margie and Fred Fletcher bought a cottage that has been loved by 4 generations of Fletchers. We’d love for you to enjoy it, as well.

Bill Fletcher purchased this house in 1983

Why Bill Fletcher chose Coastal North Carolina

Lots of folks love to come to the Carolina shore to relax, play and enjoy some down time. The Sound Relief Cottage is nestled waterfront in a neighborhood of permanent residences. Your vacation experience will be more like you own the place.

Yet minutes away are the great Crystal Coast beaches, restaurants, shopping and amusements.

What makes this house unique

You'll be waterfront on the sound with a huge "safe" water play area: no rip tides, no crashing waves and no crowds! Yet you'll have the waterfront experience with prevailing southwest breezes, stunning sunrises and sunsets, and a daily parade of offshore fishing boats and cruisers on the ICW.

Keep an eye out for bottle nose dolphin, aka porpoises. Many days you'll see these beautiful creatures navigating the ICW. If you're more interested in hiking, the Croatan National Forest is within a mile. Kayaks are for rent close-by.

A Disappointing Fixer-Upper

  • 3 of 5

Having visited NC previously, we had a certain level of expectation the way the VRBO described the house. It ..IS spacious and has great views as described but it was sorely in need of maintenance. The bunk bed was broken and the downstairs shower kept falling apart . After buying groceries they were devoured by ants. Large roaches and spiders crawled across the living room. We bought insect traps and fixed the shower and bed. It The downstairs should not have been rented out. The Keurig coffee pot and vacuum did not work. Fortunately we brought our own Keurig. If you have asthma as our granddaughter does its not very desirable. We will not rent this home again. Great potential but too dated and in need of some work and updating. Like new Living Room furniture.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the information. We were completely unaware of any problem with the bunk bed - our own grandchildren used them earlier in the month. Same for the shower head. We do have an ongoing campaign against various insects. Most recent treatment was July 11. The exterminator tells us the heat and search for water drive these critters inside. We will talk with the exterminator and make adjustments. As for the comments about condition - this is our family's vacation home. It does have some well-used furniture that serves our family and guests well. The relatively low pricing for our house reflects our understanding of condition and the weekly rental market. We do have plans for some updates but this house will never be a pristine hotel-like unit nor will it rent for $3500/week. We appreciate the feedback and will take appropriate measures. Thank you.

House was very spacious and comfortably slept 10. Views were amazing! Owner was easy to work with!

  • 4 of 5

We rented this house for a Girl Scout trip. There was plenty of space and plenty to do while there. We enjoyed our trip and would definitely stay again! The only issues we had was getting in (the owner quickly corrected), the cleaning staff showed up after we arrived, and there was a beeping noise like a watch alarm going off every hour in a locked closet in 1 of the master rooms. Everything else was perfect and still had a terrific time even with the issues. The owner was available to us at all times and was great to work with. You will not be disappointed if you rent this place! We watched boats pass by, fish jumping in the water as well as dolphins, and even caught a few hermit crabs. I have never seen the girls off of their electronics as much as they were here. There was plenty of restaurants and things to do! Everyone enjoyed the trip and didn't want to leave! Definitely a must for a family trip later! Thanks for having us!

Old house that is great for making forever memories!

  • 3 of 5

Overall this house is in a prime location for several beaches and shopping. Everything you need is within a 15-30min car ride. My son got cut on barnacles that are on the remains of the old pier, but it only took 8 stitches to repair and we continued to enjoy the main beaches. Unfortunately we could not go back in the water behind the house due to the debris and no real access since the grass was not cut nor any kind of path to enter the area. The main amenities worked great, but we had to tinker (owner did provide clear instructions) with things like the outside shower. Some items need replaced/repaired (i.e. Gas Grill), but we're in good enough condition to use for a few meals. Trash collection was a bit confusing since we didn't have any bins to use till after the scheduled pickup day (Owner did provide bins after we brought it to his attention). This location is quiet and full of wonderful neighbors that greeted us on the very first day.

The owner promptly replied to our needs and provided what we needed as soon as possible.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review. You brought several maintenance items to our attention and we appreciate that. The outside shower has been repaired, a new lawn care company was hired and the grass looks great. A new picnic table is on the deck and the grill will be reconditioned immediately. And Waste Industries has replaced the missing trash carts. Wading through the marsh grass is the access to the sound. Coastal management practices encourage (some would say require) allowing marsh grasses to remain in place. We also appreciate your kind remarks about "everything you need" and "quiet and full of wonderful neighbors" are part of the Sound Relief Cottage experience. Thank you and come stay at Sound Relief Cottage again!

A very comfortable accommodation!

  • 4 of 5

The views of the sound from the house were spectacular. The house is a bit dated, but very roomy and comfortable. The property is very assessable to Swansboro, and the Crystal Coast without being in the hub bub and traffic of those locations.

Great view!

  • 4 of 5

This house was an amazing screened in porch with a great view of the sound. The house is big enough to hold a family or 2 and not feel cramped. The house has a well equipped kitchen and plenty of seating. The mater bedroom had a very comfortable bed. The house is an older home with a few quirks of an older home but it was still nice and comfortable. The owner was quick to respond and always offering to be contacted if help was needed.
