About Paul Granier

My family of four have lived in the North Dallas area for the better part of 20 years. All of us have grown up in Texas and my wife and I have gone to university in Texas. And now we run a staffing/search firm in Dallas. We like getting away from it all from time to time and this is one of the main reasons we bought this fantastic cabin.

Paul Granier purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Paul Granier chose Smithville

We bought this cabin because we were looking for a quick getaway place near water that was within easy reach of Dallas. We had looked and looked but had never found a place that had an attractive lake, a great lot and a beautiful cabin on it. When I saw this one, I knew that that we had found the one we had been looking for and bought it immediately. This cabin, bought brand new in 2014, was built with personal pride that shows. It is immaculately furnished. It sits on 2.8 acres of mostly wooded land. And the 30-acre+ Legacy Trails Cabins neighborhood will be all vacation rental cabins set on 2-3 acres each with views of trees, rolling hills, creeks, wildlife and the Upper Mountain Fork river. Trust me, I am sure you will love it as much as we did when we discovered it.

What makes this cabin unique

If you want a secluded, peaceful getaway that is still close to the action, look no further. This cabin is set on 2.8 acres and is completely private. The view from the back deck is amazing and the Mountain Fork River is accessible from two different locations. Fishermen will love this location, for sure. Also, the river makes for an incredible kayaking experience. Check out the pictures to get a feel for the section of river where Legacy Trails keeps the kayaks.

The cabin is very high end and the beautiful workmanship on both the inside and the outside of the cabin are simply amazing. Just check out the pictures of the family room and kitchen!

There are many outside sitting areas. From the full length front porch with swing, the back porch for those that only want a 'little' nature to the fire pit area for those that truly want to 'feel' the outdoors. Make sure to look up at night and see the stars like you have never seen before.

The master bedroom has a queen bed and the second bedroom has a full size bed. There is also a queen sized sleeper sofa in the living room. The kitchen is fully equipped with the latest in appliances and conveniences and there is even a laundry room with a full size washer and dryer.

And being the gadget guy that I am, I could not do without an excellent surround sound system and Blu-ray DVD player. There is a whole assortment of movies and games to choose from, but no satellite TV service. Didn't you come here to enjoy the outdoors anyway?

But for those of you that cannot live without internet, wireless internet is available (please limit video streaming to one movie per day).

As far as phone service, AT&T Wireless and Pine Cellular work well from within the cabin.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We had a great stay. Thank you! Thank you for making our first Valentine's Day so great. We really appreciate the heart shaped decorations and the chocolates. Hope to come again soon.

Clean cabin, but backyard and river area tricky

  • 3 of 5

Inside of cabin is very nice and it was clean upon arrival. However the backyard does have a severe slope - not the easiest to get down to the fire pit. Once there though it's great - enjoyed 2 beautiful starry nights. Regarding the slope, I found numerous pieces of broken glass on the hill. I was there with 2 small children, and this was definitely a concern for me and my wife. Regarding the kayaks - there is no way that we could have used them. The method to get into the river was not safe, and I would never even attempt it. Also, the "Bug guy" came to kill the ants on the property while I was there. He was going to drop granuals to kill the fire ants. I told him that I'd rather him not as the kids are going in and out of the house - who wants fire ant granuals all over their kids. Granted, he was cool about it and left without an issue. I guess I was surprised that this wasn't taken care of ahead of time. Had we not been there we would have has an issue. So for what it's worth, the cabin itself was nice, but a few of the things that went along with it were not.

Owner's Response: John, I am really glad that you enjoyed our cabin and sorry that we did not fully meet your expectations. I will make sure to address the ant and broken glass situation. Regarding the hill on the back side of the cabin, this is the first time we have received a negative comment on that, but we will look to see if there is something we can do to have easier access to the fire pit. On the river and kayak access, I do agree it is a bit challenging to get into the river especially when the river is at its low point. We are working on a new ladder with handrail solution that we plan to install in the Spring in order to make river access easier in varying river conditions. Thanks for your feedback, Paul

Had a great time!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I drove up from Texas to see the fall colors along the Talimena National Scenic Byway. The cabin is about 15-20 minutes from the byway, and also fairly close to Beavers Bend. The cabin has everything you need, kitchen is fully stocked (plates, cups, pans, utensils), and it's somewhat secluded. It's very clean and nice. Also, the owner is very receptive to questions or concerns, and always messaged me back in a timely manner. We really enjoyed our time. I definitely recommend it.

Beautiful seclusion.

  • 4 of 5

An absolutely beautiful, quiet, secluded cabin. Immaculate inside and out with gorgeous scenery outside. Close to Broken Bow lake & Beavers Bend State Park and worth a trip to Mena, Arkansas. Lots to do or do nothing.

Con: The Legacy Trails River access was...a lil' rough, hard to use for fishing & the "river ladder" was disconcerting at best. Maybe the river was low. River access from the cabin may require Mountain Goat agility & a machete.

Don't get me wrong. This cabin was well worth it & much appreciated! I highly recommend.

Great cabin, but misrepresented

  • 3 of 5

The cabin itself was fabulous (except for killing about 40 flies inside during the first 2 days). It was beautifully decorated with nice add ons we did not expect. However, it was misrepresented.

The "flat area" by the creek has poison ivy. The creek was 12 inches wide the day after a nice rain. There was no river access we could find that wasn't marked with "no trespassing". With gun shots everywhere around us, we decided not to try to find the river. My husband wanted to fish and could not find anywhere to do it.

They had Kayaks almost a mile down the road, but it was a treacherous drop off on narrow stairs. We are 60 years old and could not make the stairs by ourselves, let alone with a heavy kayak! I wanted to kayak and could not.

Hiking was our next desired activity. The two hiking trails also had poison ivy and were only about 1/4 mile long. We had to drive 40 miles to get to the state park or national forest to find real trails (3-6 miles).

We also didn't know there was no television and no cellular service. We drove 40 miles and were unable to find a newspaper!

We wanted to be remote and quiet, but we didn't expect to be off the grid completely for a week, and did not expect to drive 40 minutes to find anything at all. All that said, we were able to rest from the busy city of Dallas and loved the beautiful star-filled skies at night.

Owner's Response: Don and Sheri, We are definitely glad you enjoyed our cabin, the restful getaway and the star-filled nights, but are equally sad that you did not fully enjoy yourself. The vast majority of people visiting our cabin have had a wonderful time, but we strive to make sure everyone thoroughly enjoys themselves. We believe our cabin is ideally located 30 miles between the Broken Bow Lake Area, Mena, Arkansas and the Talimena Scenic Highway. All great destinations with a variety of points of interest in each location. Legacy Trails Cabins is a 30-acre cabin community located adjacent to the Upper Mountain Fork River just North of Broken Bow Lake that does provide 8 free kayaks and several places where you can fish the river. As you can imagine, it is difficult to maintain a 30-acre property that is mostly in its natural state, but we will absolutely work to address the poison ivy along the trails and the cabin properties. We believe our VRBO property description does describe the amenities accurately, but you are correct that we do not provide cable/satellite service and we believe getting back to nature and taking a break from the hustle and worries of life for a few days without television is good for the soul. We do provide a large selection of DVD's and streaming video services do work across the provided Wi-Fi. AT&T (GSM) and Pine Cellular do provide good cell coverage, but we have found that Verizon (CDMA) and similar services do not have coverage at our cabin. We are really sorry that we did not fully meet your expectations. Paul and Wanda Important Update: My local property manager was also surprised by the report of poison ivy and did inspect the cabin property and hiking trails and did not find any poison ivy. There are a lot of plants commonly mistaken for poison ivy and that is what happened in this case.

Excellent for families!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a quick mid-week getaway with our two young daughters and Paul's cabin was perfect for our family's needs. Our girls played in the creek, built fairy houses, picked wildflowers, and searched for quartz. We drove into Mena to pick-up a few grocery items I forgot to pack and visited antique and book shops while there. We also drove down to Beavers Bend State Park and spent the day exploring and swimming. We will definitely book another stay at the Hillside Hideaway!
