About Nancy & Brooks Hurd

My wife and I have been coming to Cape Cod since we were married. I first came to the Cape when I was less than 2 years old to meet my grandparents in their home on Bridge Road. My father grew up in the Bridge Road house and attended the one room school house which is now a museum near the entrance to the Cape Cod National Seashore.

Nancy & Brooks Hurd purchased this cottage in 1960

Why Nancy & Brooks Hurd chose Eastham

This cottage is part of the original Nickerson farm which Hatsel Nickerson purchased in the late 1700's. This property was passed down in the Nickerson family to Edna Nickerson, the grandmother of the owner. The current cottage was built in 1960.

What makes this cottage unique

There are beautiful views of Long Pond from the dining are, kitchen, back bedroom and the deck. The Cape Cod Rail Trail runs along the west property line. This paved trail runs 22 miles from Wellfleet to Dennis following the original right-of-way of the Cape Cod Railroad.

All the windows have been replaced by modern double pane windows. In October 2016, we updated the kitchen with all new cabinets, a large farmhouse sink, new counter tops and floors.

Great little spot on Cape Cod

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed three great weeks at this little cottage on Cape Cod in Eastham. Being very familiar with this area of the Cape it was like going home! There are many quality restaurants in the area. The bike trail is adjacent to the property and the back deck over looks the pond. The owners were very responsive to the few issues we had. There is fresh water swimming in the pond or you have First Encounter Beach on the bay and several beaches on the Atlantic. The cottage is small but comfortable for two or four. Would definitely recommend .

Well equipped and good location

  • 4 of 5

Everything was fine when we arrived at the property.

The house is well equipped, with everything you need.

The only inconvenience for us was the old condition of the bathroom and the kitchen, even if you can tell from the photos that the house is not brand new. There is no photo of the bathroom on VRBO, by the way.

Too many spiders inside and too many mosquitoes outside, but I guess that's the price to pay when you're close to a pond.

Great Property, Great Price

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I stayed at the Hurd's cottage for a week in August.

It met all our expectations.

The best feature of the property is the deck. It is lovely to sit outside for morning coffee and evening BarBQs.

We loved looking onto the beautiful pond.

You can access the fresh water pond very close by.

The water was clean and clear.

The trees around the deck offer shade during the day.

The cottage is simple but adequate.

There is a bit of a mildew smell upon entering but it airs out with the doors open.

Loved the Band concerts by the Windmill.

We spent alot of time at Marconi Beach but we could ride the bikes to Coast Guard.

Thank you!

Owner's Response: This fall we are making 2 major upgrades to the cottage. First, we are removing the old drywall and insulation in the basement. This will remove any mustiness from the house. Second, we are upgrading the kitchen with new cabinets, counter tops and a new sink and faucet.

Great house!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I found the Hurd's property in early January '16 on HomeAway. Booking was easy and the contract straight forward.

The Hurds are very responsive to questions and requests. We had an issue with the dryer and the Hurds were quick to respond.

The house is very nice and close to First Encounter and Skaket beaches. The town of Orleans is right around the corner with Stop and Shop and Shaws.

We have 2 young children and the house was great for them. Nothing breakable within reach of little hands and a single level made for a relaxing time when we were at the house.

A great gem in a perfect location and at a great price. It can't be beat for a family of 4.

Great Spot!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the cottage for a week with our teenage son and his friend. It was clean and comfortable-perfect for the four of us. The cottage is equipped with everything you might need, including a couple of extra bikes. It is close to everything-the bike path, pond swimming, ocean beaches, cape cod league baseball games, the drive-in, shopping, etc. The pond is clean and wonderful for swimming, and it is so nice to have a view of it from the deck and back side of the cottage. We enjoyed grilling fish from Mac's seafood market and having leisurely dinners on the deck. Would definitely go back!

Cape Cod Rail Trail

The Cape Cod Rail Trail (CCRT) is on the west property line. The Rail Trail runs from Wellfleet (to the north) 22 miles to South Dennis (to the southwest). There is also a spur of the trail that runs to Chatham. The Rail Trail is an easy paved bike trail which follows the right-of-way of the Cape Cod Central Railroad. The Cape Cod Central Railroad started operation in 1861 providing passenger and freight service to Cape Cod.

Going north, the Rail Trail passes under Route 6 and on to Arnold’s {10 minutes by bike}. At the next intersection of the Rail Trail, is a shopping center with Local Break, Royal Thai and Friendly Fisherman (15-20 minutes by bike). South on the Rail Trail, downtown Orleans is 15 minute by bike. You can walk, run or bike on the CCRT.

Eastham Library

The original Eastham Library is on Samoset Road less than 4 minutes’ walk east of the cottage. During the demolition of all but the original (historic) building, the temporary library is in modular buildings next to the Eastham Town Hall. The new library building should be completed and occupied by Summer 2017. The Town Hall is at the traffic light where Samoset intersects Route 6.

The cottage is on Long Pond (or Depot Pond). There is access to the pond on the first undeveloped lot walking east on Samoset. This is 100 yards from the driveway. There is a fresh water beach on Great Pond 0.3 miles from the cottage. To reach the Great Pond beach, drive, walk or bike west on Samoset Road and turn on Great Pond Road. The beach is 100 yards from the intersection. First Encounter Beach on the bay is 1.4 miles west on Samoset Road. Coast Guard Beach on the Atlantic is 3.1 miles east (Samoset east to Route 6, north to Nauset road and east to Coast Guard Beach. There is limited parking at Coast Guard Beach, thus you may need to take a shuttle from a larger parking lot. The parking is well marked. There are many other beaches on the Atlantic and the Bay.

National Sea Shore

The southern entrance to the National Sea Shore is near the intersection of Route 6 and Nauset road. The Salt Pond Visitors’ Center has rangers and movies to explain the formation of Cape Cod during the last glacial period as well as local flora and fauna. There is a bike trail that runs from the visitors’ center to Coast Guard Beach.

There are beautiful hiking trails in the Fort Hill area. Fort Hill Road has 2 parking lots. Fort Hill Road is less than 1 mile south on Route 6 from the Samoset Road intersection. The Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary also has very nice hiking paths.

Our favorite restaurants in the Orleans, Eastham, Wellfleet area. are:

Arnold’s, 3580 Route 6, Eastham; popular with tourists for good seafood. Cash only. Local tip to avoid the long line: call in your order then walk right past the line and pay for your order and pick it up. You can eat in the restaurant, or take your food out.

Friendly Fisherman, 4580 Route 6, North Eastham; Good local seafood! We feel that FF is better than Arnold’s. The lines are shorter, you eat on picnic tables and there is a package store next door with your choice of beverages.

Karoo, 3 Main Street #32B, Eastham; Well-crafted South African fare.

Fairway, 4295 State Highway, Eastham;

Land Ho, 6A & Main, Orleans; A local hang out for good seafood. Arrive early, particularly if the Bo Sox are playing.

Nauset Fish & Lobster Pool, 38 Route 6A, Orleans; this is where we buy seafood to bring back to cook.

Rock Harbor Grill, 18 Old Colony Way, Orleans; A relatively new place which is a favorite of locals. Good seafood and wood fired pizza.

ABBA, 89 Old Colony Way, Orleans; Very good upscale food at upscale prices.

Joe's Beach Road Bar & Grille, 5 Beach Road, Orleans; Very good seafood at a higher price point than Land Ho.

Wicked Oyster, 50 Main Street, Wellfleet; Our favorite for Sunday brunch or a creative dinner.

Things to do with Kids

Miniature golf at Arnold’s.

Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, Brewster; 869 Main Street (Route 6A), Brewster

Cape Cod Baseball League; Orleans Firebirds. This summer league is the best college players in the US. Many Major Leaguers played in the Cape Cod League.

Whale watching boats departing from Fishermans’ Warf in Provincetown

Many ice cream shops.

Wellfleet drive in theater.
