Why Tom Miller chose Snowshoe

Snowshoe offers the best skiing conditions I've been able to find in this region but day trips to and from Snowshoe were very long, tiring days. It's so nice to ski all day and then retreat to a nice quiet, warm, comfortable place to relax and unwind.

In the off seasons, there is still a lot of activity in and around Snowshoe with mountain biking, the Greenbrier trail, hiking, Cass Scenic railroad tours, the National Radio Observatory, and Raven Golf course located just a mile from the condo.

Snowshoe is known for its great skiing, restaurants, shopping, and winter fun but during the off-season there are a lot of other fun things to do in Pocahontas County, West Virginia. Mountain biking trails for riders of all levels, zipline, Polaris tours, and scenic lift rides are all right at Snowshoe. Visit www.snowshoemtn.com for more information.

Cass Scenic Railroad State Park is located within 15 minutes from the Overlook condo. Cass began as a company town for those who worked for West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company, logging the nearby Cheat Mountain. Cass's laborers worked in the mill or the locomotive repair shop and lived with their families in white-fenced houses, built in orderly rows on a hill south of the general store. Cass now has population of around 50. Many of slopes and lifts at Snowshoe take their names from logging and railroad. This town is certainly worth the 15 minute drive. Be sure to park in the parking area and walk to the mill which is at the far end of the lot. It is amazing to imagine it as a working mill. In the Fall, Cass has steam locomotive excursions. Check their website for details. www.cassrailroad.com

National Radio Observatory - About 10 minutes past Cass, as you're driving along Route 66 to Route 92, look out your window to the left and you'll see cattle, barns, and a HUGE radio telescope. In fact, it's the world's largest movable telescope. Continue on to Green Bank by making a left on Route 92 and you'll find the visitor's center with observatory tours and a science museum.

Raven Golf course in located within a mile of Overlook. Designed by Gary Player, it is rated one of the top courses in the East by Golf Magazine.

Best kept secret!

  • 5 of 5

I was so happy to find this place! The location is very quiet .. set back on a lane off Rt. 66, about 2 miles from the entrance to Snowshoe Mountain. It’s great for a couple, or single traveler - and way better than a hotel for even a small group. The kitchen is well equipped, and the bed is super-comfy! Plus, it’s not easy to find reasonably priced accommodations when traveling alone, especially in a ski area (as I often do). This was within my budget & a comfortable stay. Thanks!

Awesome!

  • 5 of 5

I have zero reservations in saying that if I were to look in Snowshoe in the future, I'd call Tom before looking anywhere else. The place has everything you need. It's small - however, you don't usually come to the mountains to stay inside, and certainly large enough for a few people. I was there by myself so I had plenty of room. The only suggestion I'd make for anyone staying here for an extended period of time and need to do laundry, you may want to bring a roll of quarters. Other than that - the place is perfect, and Tom is equally as great to work with. You can reserve here without hesitation and know you'll get something nice and far cheaper than most anywhere else on the mountain!
