Avoid this "house" at all costs

  • 1 of 5

The house was so deceiving from its description that we chose to leave it to find a hotel and lose our deposit. It was dirty, the floors, table and all kitchen surfaces were sticky. On the table an old half eaten dried up cake welcomed us!! The shower was not high enough to stand up in and its tiles had not been cleaned in years. There was no standing room in the tiny bathroom/toilet. The 2 tiny bedrooms had only space for the bed/beds with no space to put down a suitcase, or anywhere else in the tiny place. There was only AC in the tiny living room and cats were running around from outside inside. If you are allergic to cats it is a nighttmare. The carpet in the living room was old and full of cat hairs. The house is advertised as being juxtaposed with another house. Truth is that there is also a 3rd house permanently rented touching this one. So this house is stuck between them. All this again on a tiny scale. Very claustrophobic. Lastly, it is about 5 km from the town of Sitia with absolutely nothing around it.

This is a first time in the many years that i rented via Home Away that i had a negative experience, particularly at this level.

Owner's Response: I am surprised that after 10 years in the holiday business we receive a 1 start review because we have never received less than 4 stars. We fully understand and respect that guests wait all year to spend their well earned vacations without negative surprises. We want all our guests to come back year after year and leave only with the best memories. And that is exactly what we have been achieving all these years. We are proud of our houses. We try to offer a very high level of service and so I will answer to your unjustifiably negative comment and lies in detail. 1) Cleanliness: The house was spotlessly CLEAN! The kitchen, bathroom, living room, bedrooms. The bed sheets are washed with high quality detergent and fabric softener in our own washing machine. We do not use a hotel laundry service. All these years we take great care with house preparation. ALL our guests have praised us for the high level of cleanliness. None has ever complained! So your comment is a straight lie! 2) Cake: We treat all our guests with a freshly baked homemade WHOLE cake. Most guests find it delicious and ask for the recipe. (again a straight lie!) 3) House size: The description specifies that this is a 70sqm house. This is a spacious apartment for 4 people! All ceilings are normal height for Greece. What you define as claustrophobic was perfectly normal for all our past guests! Since you were way above average in height I can understand that you may have felt a bit crammed but that would be the case in most houses in Greece! You could have warned me about your height and I would have recommended you a hotel with very high ceilings and king size bed. 4) AC: There are 2 powerful ACs. 1 in the main bedroom and 1 in the living room. They are more than enough to keep the whole house cool during hot days. Again a straight lie from you. 5) Cats: We never let the cats enter the houses. You may have forgotten to close a door. Cats are normal in Greece's countryside and villages, except in resorts where the whole environment is sterilised. 6) Carpets: All our houses have handmade, antique, persian carpets. But there were no cat hair (again a straight lie) 7) Distance and location: The description says that the house is 4km out of Sitia in a quiet area. This is what we offer: peaceful environment, beautiful garden, safe for children. This is countryside and of course there are no shops within walking distance. Sincerely, Pantelis

Lovely place in an excellent location for exploring the wonderful eastern beaches

  • 5 of 5

The property is charming, and in good condition. The hosts are also absolutely charming and really helpful, so if you need any information or advice it is readily available. we wanted one or two extra bits for the kitchen and they appeared almost immediately- can't ask for more.

I would certainly stay again.

Un lieu reposant

  • 5 of 5

Thanks a lot for all !

Ruhiger Ort zum Erholen

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5

A few words about Sitia region

Sitia is a town situated in the far east of Crete, in the prefecture of Lasithi. It lies to the east of Aghios Nikolaos and to the northeast of Ierapetra. It lies in a region unspoiled by mass tourism. Even during the busy summer peak, Sitia retains a certain charm and laid-back style. In the town but especially in the region's villages you will enjoy authentic Cretan cuisine made with quality local olive oil and other local produce. During the day you can enjoy swimming and sunbathing in Sitia beach or in the numerous untouched beaches lying towards the Eastern tip of the island.

What to do in Sitia

For history and archaeology enthusiasts, Sitia's archeological museum display's exhibits dating back to the Neolithic era in 3,500 BC while the medieval fortress of Kazarma, situated at the top of Sitia is a reminder of the town's medieval past. Furthermore, the folklore museum exhibits items from the past century such as weavings, woodcuts and other everyday life items.

During the evening you can visit one of the numerous small restaurants ("Rakadika") situated along the town's fishing port, which serve delicious variety plates along with Cretan spirit "Raki". And if you are up to it you can continue your night out until the early morning hours in one of the local bars and clubs.

What to do in the region

Archaeology / History / Religion

On your way to Vai and Erimoupoli you will pass from the monastery of Toplou. Here you can visit the monastery's museum with items dating back to the Ottoman empire period up to the Second World War. In Erimoupoli bay you can visit the ruins of the ancient town of Itanos. Further to the south east, Zakros is one of the four major Minoan palaces unearthed in Crete. The ruins of the palace await you at the lower entrance of the Zakros gorge.

To the east of Sitia lies Europe's only natural palm forest of Vai. In a short distance from Vai lies the bay of Erimoupoli with the ruins of the ancient town of Itanos. To the south east of the region lie the long sandy beaches and warm waters of Kserokambos . There are numerous other deserted beaches we can help you discover.

For windsurfing enthusiasts the world renowned Kouremenos beach is a must visit. The club offers equipment hire and lessons. For the hardcore athletes, the Faneromeni bay offers excellent wave conditions (depending on the weather). Here you will need to bring your own kit. Mountain bikes are a fun way to explore the region's endless olive groves. Spring and autumn is the best period for this since the weather is cooler during the day.

The areas rugged terrain offers numerous gorges that are walkable with no special equipment. First and foremost the 4km Richti gorge, near the village of Mesa Mouliana will dazzle you with the year-round waterfalls and dense vegetation all the way down to a deserted beach. The 4.5km gorge of Zakros starts at the village of Ano Zakros and meets the sea next to the archaeological site of Kato Zakros. It is one of the most impressive gorges in Crete with steep sides and dramatic rock formations. It is also known as the Gorge of the Dead because ancient Minoans buried their dead in caves high up on the gorge's sides. The 3.5km Chochlakies or Karoumes gorge ends in the magnificent and isolated bay of Karoumes.

Culinary Delights

In Sitia's "Rakadika" and small taverns scattered in villages throughout the region you can try, apart from local meats, also some delicacies of the region cooked in locally produced olive oil, like "chochlious" (snails cooked either with tomato or vinegar and rosemary), "omaties" (stuffed pig intestines), "anthous" (stuffed courgettes) and other. When you visit Toplou don't forget to grab a bite in the monastery's small tavern and purchase organic products from the monastery's extensive agricultural produce (honey, olive oil etc).
