Not awful but not great
The house was pretty and located in a quiet and pleasant area. It was well equipped though much of the equipment was tired. The garden was fantastic and great for children to run around in and explore.
Unfortunately the pool was a disappointment as, unbeknownst to us, it was treated with bromine and on a few occasions when the water got in our eyes, despite us all wearing goggles the entire time, it caused an immense amount of pain and discomfort to our eyes and took more than 20mins to recover. Moreover the chemicals in the water caused us to cough a lot which was concerning and therefore we were forced to limit our use of it despite trying some of the owner’s suggestions to improve ventilation and dilute the chemicals. This was a real shame as the pool was the main thing that attracted us to La Canterie and which the children were most excited about.
On top of this the house was not particularly clean, with surfaces and window sills covered in cobwebs and dead flies, mould in the fridge and food stuffs long past their use by dates. We caught a mouse on the second day after having observed it boldly run across the kitchen surfaces on at least two occasions. We then paid 100 euros for the privilege of having the house cleaned AFTER we left.
Communication with the owner was pleasant throughout and despite his best efforts to help improve our experience of the swimming pool it was soon determined that there was little that could be done to resolve the issue so we powered on and made the best of the rest of our holiday.
