A LITTLE HISTORY
Located in BERRY, Sancerre from its rocky peak of 300m above sea level, dominates the splendid panorama of the Loire Valley.
Etienne de Champagne, 1st count of Sancerre, in the twelfth century built a fortified castle and fortified the city which played a preponderant role in the Middle Ages. War of one hundred years, wars of religion, (memorable siege in 1573 of the city become for a time Huguenot) royalist uprising said "La Vendée Sancerroise" during the Revolution, were the most significant events of its history of the twelfth century to the late seventeenth century. From this period, Sancerre lost its strategic importance and had to submit to the laws of the State despite its rebellious character. Chief town in the year VIII of the first Republic, the city was decapitated intellectually in 1926 by the suppression of its sub-prefecture and independent administrative services. At the beginning of the 3rd millennium, Sancerre remains a city where life is good: the capital of two gourmet products answering the label A. O.C (Denomination of Controlled Origin) the Vin de Sancerre and Crottin de Chavignol. These assets make it one of the busiest tourist centers in the Central Region.
