Our home is situated at the top of a very steep, windy mile-long road. Although it might be a bumpy ride, it's worth it once you see the views. We're the last visible house on the right, so you feel as if you have the entire mountainside to yourselves.
Ethan is a writer and a carpenter. Christine is a writer and a professor. Together they penned the award-winning fantasy series ROWAN OF THE WOOD.
We're both ethical vegetarians and love animals. Our little family consists of Buster, a friendly and surprisingly low-key boxer, and Shadow, the cat. Ethan and Christine tend to be quiet and polite, unless you get Christine talking, then you'll wonder if she'll ever stop! We sometimes travel to conventions and festivals to promote our books.
We now live off-site, so our entire home is available for your rental.
When at home, Ethan keeps pretty busy with home improvements, making toys and furniture, and writing. You will find Christine either out in her garden or at the computer preparing for of course, at Starbucks, enjoying a frothy decaf nonfat nowhip mocha.
For relaxation, we generally prefer reading or socializing in a relatively quiet environment. Unless we're watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer, again. Regardless what we're doing, you can rest assured Ethan is thumbing through dozens of hilarious photos and memes via his iPhone.
Our caretaker will warmly greet you, show you your room, and then give you your privacy. You likely won't see them again until your departure when they bid you farewell and safe travels. However, if you'd like to play a board game or have a philosophical conversation during your stay, I'm sure they could be persuaded quite easily.
Our life motto: 'Tis a gift to be simple. 'Tis a gift to be kind.
Ethan Rose purchased this house in 2011
We bought this Glenhaven Gem as a foreclosure after the 2008 crash. Ethan renovated it into the beauty it is today. Christine and her talented mother decorated the interior in a simple, yet elegant Old World Style, reminiscent of the villas of the French Riviera.
Once we saw this place, there was no way we could pass it up. Although work takes us elsewhere at the moment, we will be retiring at this magnificent retreat in the future.
The views of Clear Lake are unsurpassed. This place offers silence and serenity. From its balconies, one can faintly hear the wind whistle through the leaves, watch barn swallows swirl overhead, and smell the fresh, clean air.
The area gets very little rain most of the year, so you can bet you'll have a beautiful day to explore the area, go out on the lake, hike in the National Forest, or go on a romantic wine-tasting tour.
It truly is slice of heaven.
It's the perfect place for a writer or artist retreat. We've written several novels from this peaceful perch, and several of our guests have found inspiration for their lives and art here as well.
My husband, our two dogs, and I had a wonderful time staying here over thanksgiving weekend. The owner had a fire going for us when we got there, and it was a nice cozy place to stay. It's a great place to go to get away from the business of life and just relax.
This is one of the worst vrbo experiences we've ever had. We are not new to vacation rentals. The central valley temperatures are known to be high during this time of the year. The air conditioners mentioned in the description DO NOT WORK. We went with a 4 month old infant, and for the 2 hrs we were in, the room temperatures did not come below 90 , and we were almost dehydrated, it felt like we were sitting in an oven. The portable air conditioner is a cooler. We had to check out immediately and drive back 3 hrs back home in the traffic because we could not book any other place at a reasonable price. It took 2 days for my infant to be her ownself. The husband of the owner sounded consuderate and agreed for cancellation and refund, but upon multiple calls to the owner and involving vrbo, the owner had the audacity to tells us that we are ruining her weekend, we did not do the research and we did not read the description. We are Californians and we surely know the weather. She returned only 50% of our money. The kitchen was so ill equipped with movable small countertops. The entire house is vampire themed, which can scare younger kids. The only reason I give one star is because the views are beautiful. But you surely do not want to stay here , The house felt so not insulated. I'm going to write to vrbo to remove this listing from here. And to the owner you ruined our vacation. Not us.
Spending time in Lucerne was fantastic!
So relaxing, beautiful scenery, peaceful, fabulous accommodations, too.
The small town atmosphere with their Fourth of July craft fair and parade of cardboard boats was exciting.
We visited Ceago Vineyards and saw the beautiful fields of blooming lavender. I had a bottle of their wine shipped to my daughter, and she loved it.
Watching the fireworks across the lake in several directions from the balcony made the evening spectacular.
I look forward to my next visit.
My husband and I stayed at Chateau du Lac Rose for a quick retreat before Christmas, and it was perfect! The views were beyond breathtaking. The pictures honestly don't do it justice. We snuggled up by the wood stove in the main room, enjoyed the cool weather, and made a solstice feast in that beautiful kitchen. We didn't explore the area except to dash out for some groceries and a wine tasting or two (so many vineyards to choose from!), but we did love the solitude and peaceful serenity of the place. We sat out on the back balcony and enjoyed our new wine as the sun set in a brilliant orange display.
We awoke Tuesday morning to a glorious surprise! The valley below was filled with fog, so it really felt like a castle in the clouds! Thank you Christine and Ethan for a charming stay. We will be coming back soon.
